Surprise! Apple Watch is being sold in stores 鈥� just not Apple stores

While Apple stores won鈥檛 be carrying the Apple Watch on Friday, a handful of select boutique stores are. That includes Maxfield of Los Angeles where about 50 people were lined up Thursday night to buy the watch. And the line continued to grow during the night. Maxfield will open Friday at 9 A.M.

So, what about making phone calls on the Apple Watch?

One of the most-touted features of the Apple Watch is phone calls. But how does it work exactly? The feature has often been couched as the realization of the two-way wrist radio worn by Dick Tracy, a comic strip character who made his debut way back in 1931. Apple CEO Tim Cook made reference to the fictional detective鈥檚 radio, designed like a wristwatch, in his聽March 9 keynote introducing the Apple Watch to the world.

It was an old 鈥淪aturday Night Live鈥� joke: 鈥淚t's a floor wax and a dessert topping!鈥� Now, technology is turning the gag into reality. It's not sufficient, for example, to just be a light bulb or just camera any more. It also has to be remotely controlled from thousands of miles away and play music, watch the kids, and keep track of your appointments. It may even help you learn French. The question is do we really want everything to turn into a digital Swiss Army knife of multiple functions and features?

Unusual, trendy and just plain weird wearables

Most wearables perform only a few functions. They count your steps, show you the time, or track your heart rate. These unusual devices do much more. For instance, one attaches to your body or your bike and shows you a real-time weather forecast. Another tells you when you are stressed out and should breathe a bit slower. While the Apple Watch gets all of the attention, these gadgets fit into a niche that might just solve a real problem or provide a distinct benefit.
