Florida begins arming teachers as large school districts rebuff controversial program

Starting this month, teachers in seven Florida school districts are locked and loaded. This, all thanks to a contentious law approved by the Florida legislature in May, that gives schools the option to allow teachers to carry guns. The new law expands on the guardian school safety program introduced after the Parkland shooting last year. Okeechobee is one of the few districts that are arming teachers. They argue other districts should get on board and use the option to protect students. Gun control groups dispute this. Beyond Florida, at least eight other states like Texas and Louisiana allow teachers and staff to be armed.
