Engineers test first of its kind cockpit technology that detects possible collision_1
FOX is in the cockpit of the Honeywell Test Flight 757, equipped with technology engineers think could prevent close calls. Honeywell Aerospace Technology's 'SURF-A' system can detect two planes on a collision course during takeoff and landing.
Honeywell Aerospace's ‘Surface Alert System,' or ‘SURF-A,' can detect when a rogue aircraft gets in the way of another plane that has been cleared for takeoff or landing. The system gives pilots two aural alerts when an unauthorized airplane enters the runway on a collision course with the authorized airplane. The first alert sounds 30 seconds before collision, and the second alert sounds 15 seconds before collision.
