The Carolina Hurricanes may never lose a playoff game again, and they have one team to thank

The Carolina Hurricanes have more than lived up to their namesake so far this postseason.

They have looked like a Category 5 natural disaster for teams in the Eastern Conference during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, sweeping the Ottawa Senators (with some help from the Hockey Gods thanks to a terrible hype song) and looking to do much of the same against the upstart Philadelphia Flyers to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals for the third time in four seasons.

This isn't anything new for the Canes, either.

In the past four postseasons including this year, Carolina is 30-10 in the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

BRADY TKACHUK ADDRESSES TRADE RUMORS (AGAIN) AFTER SENATORS PLAYOFF EXIT

In other words, if you're a betting man, you might as well put a reminder in your calendar every April to throw some money down on the Hurricanes to make the Eastern Conference Finals; they are that automatic.

The problem is what happens once they get there.

You may have noticed I included their record in the first two rounds while conveniently omitting their results from the subsequent series.

That's because the Hurricanes are 1-8 in their last two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals.

But things are changing this year, I can almost guarantee it.

I think the Carolina Hurricanes are about to win their first Prince of Wales Trophy since 2006 and make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and it's all because one team didn't live up to the hype placed upon them this season.

That 1-8 record is against one franchise: the Florida Panthers.

And this postseason, the back-to-back defending champs are watching the playoffs like the rest of us commoners: from the couch.

Thanks to a bevy of injuries to their star players as well as the fatigue of having to play meaningful hockey well into the month of June three seasons in a row, the Cats went from postseason locks as recently as January to NHL Draft lottery hopefuls in the span of four months.

And no one is benefiting from that more than the Hurricanes.

I really don't see either of the two teams on the other side of the bracket giving this Carolina team much trouble.

The Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens are fun stories, but this Hurricanes team is built to play gritty postseason hockey and have the battle scars teams need to make deep playoff runs.

Once they get to the Finals, that's a different story, but I'm sure at this point, Canes fans are just happy to get that Eastern Conference monkey off their backs.

Brady Tkachuk addresses trade rumors (again) after Senators playoff exit

Now that the Ottawa Senators' season is over, it's time to move on from the drama that plagued them for much of the year...

Just kidding, it's still going.

On Wednesday, the team held its breakup day after getting swept by the really impressive Carolina Hurricanes, and one of the biggest moments came from captain Brady Tkachuk.

It had been an interesting year for the American-born captain who had to deal with multiple off-ice distractions — many, like his dad's comments on players' toughness and Team USA's trip to the White House, were wildly overblown — and that led to an influx of trade rumors.

Those ramped up after Ottawa was completely manhandled by the Canes, and never held the lead at any point in the series.

"Well, I mean, of course, I wasn’t here for, you know, everybody’s meetings and the other day, and so I haven’t had the chance to talk to Steve (Staios, Senators GM)," Tkachuk said. "But I mean, I feel like I’ve answered this hundreds of times, that none of that I feel like I’ve never shown, I’ve never said, none of those things ever came out of my mouth.

"And quite honestly, it’s just getting frustrating," he continued. "It’s becoming a distraction and, ’cause I’ve, I have been fully committed to this team, to the city, and it’s just becoming a distraction, frustrating to deal with."

I find this whole thing fascinating.

First of all, no, it was not a great series for the Senators, but have you watched the Hurricanes? Their goaltending may be a bit of a question mark, but Rod Brind'Amour has those fellas playing so well that Ottawa never really stood a chance.

So, while it's disappointing, I think there's plenty of reason to think the team is headed in the right direction if you're Brady Tkachuk.

But the media can't help but keep bringing these rumors and other distractions up to him over and over, even when he expresses his commitment to the team.

He alluded to it in that answer. It's getting frustrating.

In fact, not only has Tkachuk shot down these rumors, but Staios had as well just days after the Senators were eliminated, calling the trade rumors "nonsense," per The Big Lead.

So, could all this questioning finally make Tkachuk say, "That's it, get me out of here"?

We'll keep an eye on it, because if that happens, there will be no shortage of teams willing to cut a deal.

Ottawa's Ridly Greig delivers disgusting cheap shot in game 4 against Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes were looking to put away the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon, and boy, were the Sens not willing to go down without a fight.

Or, in this case, one heck of a cheap shot.

The Senators are a team that has no problem with mixing it up, and that can be a good skill set in the postseason. I mean, the Florida Panthers just won back-to-back Cups doing it.

However, you've got to make sure you don't cross the line, and Senators forward Ridly Greig did just that.

First, Greig had a hand in ramping up the intensity in Game 4 when he ran over Carolina netminder Frederik Andersen.

That’s a slam-dunk, no-question-about-it penalty, and while it’s not classy, it’s not outside the scope of what you’ll see in the playoffs — especially in an elimination game.

However, that animosity boiled over later in the period, and that's when Greig dropped one of the dirtiest moves I think I've seen all season.

Things got completely out of hand, and Greig and teammate Warren Foegele got tied up with Carolina's Sean Walker.

Because with Walker tied up, Greig delivered a vicious uppercut straight to his chops.

That's about as cheap and as dirty as it gets.

Believe it or not, out of all of that, there were only three minor penalties, and two of them went to Carolina's Nic Deslauriers.

So Greig got away with that one on the ice, but he could still be facing a potential suspension and an almost certain fine.

The Senators ended up losing this one 4-2, so their season is over, and the Canes will move on to face the winner of the Flyers-Penguins series, which Philadelphia has a chance to sweep on Saturday night.

But, if Greig is suspended — and I think that was definitely suspension-worthy — he'll have to serve it at the start of next season.

When it comes to sports superstitions, they don't make them much more militant than teams and players in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Everyone on the team has to grow "playoff beards," and if the team ate at a certain restaurant then had a great game, guess where you're eating for the next two months during home games?

Hell, even Sidney Crosby has been wearing the same jockstrap for 20 years because of how superstitious he was (okay, that was TMI, I apologize).

Suffice it to say, teams can get a little paranoid when it comes to luck and bad omens in the playoffs, which is why the Ottawa Senators had to act accordingly after their team fell down 0-2 against the Carolina Hurricanes.

For those who are unaware, the Sens are back in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since their Eastern Conference Finals run in 2017, and one fan decided to create a hype video to commemorate the occasion.

Apparently, this isn't the first time the internet's least favorite Ottawa fan stepped behind a mic, and the Senators felt as though they had no other option but to get rid of the kid.

I love this.

He's clearly bad luck, what if China starts acting a fool all of a sudden while he's hanging out in Taipei for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The move is being universally celebrated by fans on X, claiming this move may have singlehandedly shifted the series back in Ottawa's favor.

NHL playoffs start with a bang as Team USA star Brady Tkachuk drops gloves at opening faceoff

The NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs got started with a big bang on Saturday.

Team USA folk hero Brady Tkachuk dropped the gloves with Jordan Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes in a battle of on-ice captains as soon as the puck dropped to begin the quest for the Stanley Cup.

When taking the ice to begin the game, Tkachuk appeared to ask Staal if he had any interest in getting into it.

Apparently, it was a yes.

Tkachuk threw a couple of right hands, but Staal delivered a huge blow that connected and knocked Tkachuk to the ice.

This is not the first time Tkachuk dropped the gloves at the opening faceoff this season. He did it twice earlier against New York Islanders captain Anders Lee, including just last week.

Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk are teammates on the back-to-back reigning champion Florida Panthers, who failed to qualify for the playoffs this year.

The Tkachuks won Olympic gold in February, getting long-awaited revenge on Canada, which has dominated the rivalry in men's ice hockey.

It was the USA's first gold in men's ice hockey since 1980, and the first time the U.S. beat Canada in the knockout stage since winning gold over Canada in 1960.

Team USA captain Auston Matthews gets unexpected welcome from Leafs fans upon return to Toronto

Team USA men’s hockey captain returned to his home ice in the NHL – ScotiaBank Arena in Toronto – and the Canadian faithful could’ve made it a lot worse on him during his homecoming.

Matthews, who helped Team USA beat beat Canada in the gold-medal game, knew he would be returning north of the border at some point to continue his 2025-26 NHL season. But the recognition he got was surprisingly positive despite him being a part of the team that upset Canada in Milan.

During a stoppage in play against the Ottawa Senators, led by Matthews’ U.S. teammate Brady Tkachuk, the Maple Leafs gave recognition to the three players on their team who represented their countries in the Milan Cortina Games.

After introducing Swedish stars William Nylander and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, the arena PA announcer introduced the Leafs’ "gold medalist" captain in Matthews, who received some jeers initially.

Then, the whole arena rose to give Matthews a standing ovation as he was called out by the announcer. So, instead of ripping into Matthews for what happened overseas, the fans gave their veteran captain a round of applause before play resumed.

The TSN broadcast also showed Tkachuk on his Senators bench, looking up at the video board and smiling as Matthews was called.

Mathews was among the Team USA stars to visit President Donald Trump and the White House ahead of his State of the Union address, which triggered significant backlash and criticism.

Players stood their ground, pointing to their American pride as to why they decided to take the Air Force jet to the White House following their historic win over Canada.

And before returning to his Canadian home ice, Matthews and the Maple Leafs were in Tampa Bay facing the Lightning, where fans at Amalie Arena gave the visitor a loud reaction. A short ovation from Lightning fans also rained down on the ice for him.

While Matthews has enjoyed winning his gold medal, it’s been a rough go for Toronto this season. They sit at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with a 27-24-9 record (63 points), where they’ve now lost three games in a row after the 5-2 defeat to the Senators.

Team USA star Brady Tkachuk says he was tested for drugs right after men’s hockey team won Olympic gold

After Team USA’s thrilling win over Canada in the Olympic gold medal game Sunday, all Brady Tkachuk wanted to do was celebrate.

However, he had to take a drug test first.

Tkachuk, 26, wrapped up his media obligations and was on his way to the locker room when he got a tap on the shoulder.

"I get a tap on the shoulder, ‘Hello Brady, you've been selected for a drug test,’" Tkachuk said on a recent episode of his podcast, "Wingmen with Matthew and Brady Tkachuk."

Matthew Tkachuk said players are not required to take the drug test upon being notified, but you are under supervision until you do so. Brady said two other players opted to do their tests right away but missed a couple of the songs. He did not want to miss any of the celebrations, so he opted to wait until the bus left to take his test, which wasn’t for another hour and a half to two hours.

Matthew said the man administering the test, a man he named "little Johnny," had a front-row seat to the locker room celebrations.

Brady said that, in about a 40-minute span, he drank about five beers, three Powerades and two waters but didn’t have the urge to use the restroom. He explained that the drug tests require 90 milliliters of urine, and if you don’t fill up the cup to the requisite amount, you have to wait until you fill it up.

Brady said, normally after a game, he has no issue going to the restroom, but with the pressure of having to take a test to continue celebrating, he wasn’t sure if he could produce enough urine to complete the test. The Ottawa Senators captain said he was being patient and finally decided to take the test 10 minutes before the bus departed.

"Finally, 10 minutes before the bus (left), I'm like, ‘Eff it, I got to gamble, I got to gamble with this one.' And did it, and (it was) 100 milliliters. I was like, ‘Thank God,' because if I had to stay there and all the boys left, and I had to meet them, I would have been sour."

The locker room celebrations kicked off a wild few days of partying for Team USA.

After Team USA’s win in Milan, the team flew to Miami to celebrate its win at E11even, a famous nightclub. When their raucous celebration wrapped up, they flew up to Washington, D.C., to meet with President Donald Trump and attend the State of the Union address Tuesday.

The Senators returned to action Thursday and lost 2-1 to the Detroit Red Wings in overtime. Tkachuk scored the team’s lone goal but was left bloodied after a big hit.

The Ottawa Senators were back in action Thursday, and Team USA star Brady Tkachuk was right in the middle of things in the team’s 2-1 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

Tkachuk, 26, opened the scoring in the game when he ripped a shot from the slot on a power play to give the Senators a 1-0 lead in the first period.

While Tkachuk and the Senators were held off the score sheet the rest of the game, he was still involved in the action.

In the second period, after the Red Wings tied the game on Dylan Larkin’s power-play goal, Tkachuk was bloodied on a hit.

Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson stepped into Tkachuk, dropping the Senators captain to the ice as he held his face. Tkachuk’s teammate, Dylan Cozens, took issue with Edvinsson’s hit and dropped the gloves.

Edvinsson landed a couple of solid punches and dropped Cozens to the ice. After the fight, Tkachuk was helped to the bench by a trainer, holding a towel to his face.

After Edvinsson and Cozens fought, numerous other Red Wings and Senators players were tangled up with one another. They eventually were untangled, and the referees were convening at center ice when Tkachuk skated off the bench and toward the Red Wings penalty box to talk to Edvinsson.

The referees quickly skated over to pull Tkachuk away and promptly handed him a 10-minute misconduct penalty. Once in the box, Tkachuk and Edvinsson stood and barked at each other.

The teams played a scoreless third period, and the Red Wings won in overtime on Larkin’s second goal of the game.

The Senators will look to bounce back when they play the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night at 7 p.m. ET.

Brady Tkachuk is back with his Ottawa Senators, and he stood his ground when faced with a question about the viral moment when Team USA laughed at a joke by President Donald Trump about the women’s ice hockey team during a phone call after both teams won gold medals in Milan.

As players like Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman admitted, players "should have reacted differently."

Tkachuk responded to a reporter’s question about the moment Trump said he would "have" to invite the women’s team, which also defeated Canada in the Olympics, to Tuesday’s State of the Union or else he "probably would be impeached."

"Yeah, I get it," Tkachuk said when a reporter asked if he understood that the women’s team felt displeased with the men’s team’s reaction. "I have no other comments other than for the things we can control. We supported them. They supported us. Can’t control what other people say."

Tkachuk added it was "fun" being around the women’s team while in Milan.

"It was fun seeing them play, fun to see the excellence they brought every single game and how they’re, by far, the best team in that tournament," he said. "It was just fun seeing them after picking their brains. They were picking our brains, and it was just fun being around them."

Tkachuk was asked a follow-up question about why he would laugh at Trump’s joke. Again, he stood his ground.

"It was a whirlwind of a moment. You can’t really control what somebody says, and I guess it caught [us] off guard a little bit," he said. "I mean, when you’re talking to the president 10 minutes after you just achieved your dream, it’s just the fact that you’re talking to him,

"You can’t really believe where your life is at where you’re talking to the president of the United States after you just won a gold medal."

Tkachuk was with his U.S. teammates at Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, and the chamber gave the team a standing ovation as players showcased their Olympic gold medals

The women’s team declined an invitation to Washington, D.C., citing "previously scheduled academic and professional commitments." Trump said at the State of the Union address that the women's team will visit the White House "soon."

USA Hockey responded to Trump’s suggestion that the team would be going to the White House.

"Players are back competing with their professional and collegiate teams and are in the midst of their season," a USA Hockey spokesperson told Front Office Sports. "They’re honored and grateful to be invited, and any opportunity to visit the White House as a team will be based on their schedules once their seasons conclude."

While there’s been a divide on social media about the moment, Ellen Hughes, the mother of Jack and Quinn Hughes, who played a role in Team USA’s fate in Milan as a player development staff member with the women’s team, did not seem bothered by Trump’s comments.

"These players, both the men and women, can bring so much unity to a group and to a country," she told "Today." "People that cheered on that don’t watch hockey, people that have politics on one side or on the other side, and that’s all both the men’s team and the women’s team care about.

"If you could see what we see from the inside, and the men and women sharing, you know, dorm rooms and halls and flex floors and the camaraderie and the synergy and the way the women cheered on the men and the way the men cheered on the women — that’s what it’s all about," she added.

Brady Tkachuk addresses White House's 'clearly fake' AI video showing him insulting Canadians

Brady Tkachuk has found himself in a rather awkward position.

Days after crushing the hearts of Canadians by helping the United States win a gold medal over its northern neighbor, Tkachuk is back with his Senators, who play in Canada's capital of Ottawa, for a playoff push.

A TikTok posted by the White House probably didn't help matters because it featured footage of Tkachuk's conference at a 4 Nations game last year that was doctored by artificial intelligence to make it appear as if he spoke disparagingly of Canada and its citizens.

"They booed our national anthem, so I had to come out and teach those maple syrup-eating f---- a lesson," Tkachuk allegedly says in the video. Tkachuk and his brother, Matthew, were part of three fights in nine seconds against Canada last year.

Tkachuk celebrated his gold medal in Washington, D.C., but was not pleased with the video.

"Well, it's clearly fake, because it's not my voice, not my lips moving. I'm not in control of any of those accounts. I know that those words would never come out of my mouth. So, I can't do anything about it," Tkachuk told reporters Thursday ahead of his NHL return, via ESPN.

When asked if he enjoyed the video, he repeated his sentiments.

"It's not my voice. It's not what I was saying," he added. "I would never say that. That's not who I am. So, I guess I don't like that video because that would never come out of my mouth and never had that thought."

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Some have also accused Tkachuk of saying, "Close the northern border" while on the phone with President Donald Trump after the team won gold.

"I've been seeing stuff that people think it's me. But if you watch the video, it's not my voice or something that I never say," Tkachuk said. "I don't know how that took a storm on its own when I give everything I have here.

"It's crazy when things go on social media, how fast they go. I would never say anything like that."

Tkachuk will play as a member of the home team in Canada Thursday at 7 p.m. against the Detroit Red Wings.

Team USA hockey stars keep America's heroes top of mind after grabbing Olympic gold

Team USA men’s hockey stars Matthew and Brady Tkachuk kept America’s heroes in mind as they celebrated their gold medal triumph over Canada at the Winter Olympics on Sunday.

The two players spoke to KSDK-TV with an American flag draped over each of their shoulders.

"I feel on top of the world. Just to do it while my brother’s here. There’s so many people that we can thank. Matthew said everybody in St. Louis, all the family and friends, even every first responder, everyone that protects and serves our country. This is for them. This is for every American," Brady Tkachuk told the St. Louis station.

Matthew Tkachuk interjected, "All the military that put their life on the line for us."

He also reflected on the win over Canada and said the brothers couldn’t have done it without a ton of support.

"Hockey’s our game. It’s the United States of America’s game. It’s the greatest country in the world," he said. "We have the best support ever – hundreds of millions of people back home, so many people in St. Louis, everyone in St. Louis.

"We could feel the support whether they’re hockey fans or not. Everyone’s watching. Everyone better be partying right now. Everyone better be wearing the red, white and blue for as long as they can. It should be a month mandate to wear the red, white and blue of the United States and celebrate us and the other Olympian gold medalists."

It was Jack Hughes who gave Team USA the win in overtime against Canada.

The New Jersey Devils star was able to put the puck past Jordan Binnington for the win.

"This is all about our country right now. I love the USA," he said. "I love my teammates. It’s unbelievable. The U.S. are a hockey brotherhood. It’s so strong, and we had so much support from ex-players. I’m so proud to be American today."

Team USA men’s ice hockey star Brady Tkachuk offered a refreshing take on what it meant to him to be able to represent his country at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The Ottawa Senators star’s take was far different from the responses other American Olympic athletes have given and garnered backlash for.

"Being able to represent the U.S. at this stage in the Olympics is one of the greatest honors I’ve ever had," he told reporters during a training session, via KDSK-TV. "Truly grateful to be here and represent the red, white and blue."

Tkachuk was a standout performer when Team USA took the ice in the 4 Nations Face-Off last year. The Americans ignited a rivalry with Canada that had long been dormant aside from competitive play on the ice. Political tensions between the two countries last year led to an all-out brawl between players during the tournament.

The Olympic matchups were expected to bring the same intensity in Italy, though the gloves may very well stay on.

Tkachuk is one of the handful of NHL stars on Team USA. It’s the first time pro hockey players are allowed to don the Stars and Stripes since the 2014 Sochi Games.

The U.S. roster includes goalies Jeremy Swayman, Jake Oettinger and Connor Hellebuyck, forwards Brady Tkachuk, Jack Eichel, J.T. Miller, Matt Boldy, Vincent Trocheck, Matthew Tkachuk, Dylan Larkin, Brock Nelson, Auston Matthews, Jake Guentzel, Tage Thompson, Kyle Connor, Jack Hughes and Clayton Keller and defensemen Zach Werenski, Brock Faber, Noah Hanifin, Charlie McAvoy, Quinn Hughes, Jacob Slavin and Jake Sanderson.

Ottawa Senators fans boo USA national anthem after Trump issues tariffs

When Canadian and American teams face off against one another, it is commonplace for both countries' national anthems to be played or performed.

That was the case at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, when the Minnesota Wild visited the Senators for an NHL bout.

The visiting team's anthem is normally performed first, as was the case on Saturday night.

But, before the home crowd heard its own anthem, they let out boos at the end of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

The game came on the same day that President Donald Trump signed an executive order, which will go into effect Tuesday, consisting of a 25% additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on imports from China.

Energy resources from Canada will have a lower 10% tariff, according to the White House. In a statement obtained by ӣ��Ƶ Saturday, the Trump administration said the order is in response to an "extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl, (that) constitutes a national emergency."

Ahead of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing his resignation, Trump said he would "love" if Canada could become the "51st state."

On their four-game homestand that wrapped up following their 6-0 victory, the Senators hosted all USA teams – there are seven Canadian teams in the National Hockey League and 25 teams based in the states.

The Senators will kick off a four-game U.S. road trip against the Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning (two games), and Florida Panthers before returning home on Feb. 22 to host the Montreal Canadiens.

The long layover comes due to the upcoming 4 Nations tournament featuring the USA, Canada, Finland and Sweden.

Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin trades blows with Senators star as game descends into chaos

Scrums after the whistle are common in the NHL. What isn’t common is when you see a superstar goalie join the fracas after the whistle.

During the New York Rangers' 5-0 win over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday in New York, star goalie Igor Shesterkin charged right into the middle of the fight and was ready to swing.

The Rangers were up 3-0 with 12:51 left in the third period over the Senators when things got crazy in Madison Square Garden.

Senators captain Brady Tkachuk went after a loose puck around the neck and ran into Rangers’ star goalie Igor Shesterkin, sending the goalie back into his own net.

The five Rangers players on the ice immediately came to their goalie’s defense as they swarmed Tkachuk.

Then the rest of the Senators’ players on the ice came to their captain’s defense, and eventually each Rangers and Senators skater paired off with one another in a shoving match.

While all the chaos unfolded, Shesterkin hunched over in the crease, gathering himself.

Then suddenly, as the chaos started winding down, Shesterkin got up and charged straight into the melee and went after Tkachuk.

Tkachuk saw Shesterkin coming and punched at the goalie’s helmet, knocking Shesterkin down, while Shesterkin threw a blocker toward Tkachuk.

Then Tkachuk, whose right arm was being held by Rangers forward Matt Rempe, jostled with Shesterkin before the referees intervened and removed Shesterkin from the scrum.

As Shesterkin was being pulled away, Rempe, who is known for fighting in his short time in the NHL, went after Tkachuk.

But a referee got between the two, not letting them fight, despite Rempe and Tkachuk throwing punches at each other around the referee.

Once order was restored on the ice, the referees convened and doled out a lot of penalties.

Shesterkin was penalized two minutes for leaving the goalie's crease. Rempe was given a double-minor penalty for roughing.

Tkachuk was also given a double-minor penalty for roughing, and he was also penalized for goalie interference.

Shane Pinto, the Senators' center, was also given a minor penalty for roughing Rangers’ defenseman Ryan Lindgren.

The Rangers ended up on the power play after all the penalties, and Artemi Panarin cashed in to make it 4-0.

Alexis Lafrenière, Arthur Kaliyev, Rempe, Panarin and Will Cuylle all scored in the win for the Rangers.

The Rangers are 7-1-3 in their last 11 games and have surged back into the wild-card race after a dreadful stretch in which they won just four of 19 games in December.

For Shesterkin, it was his second straight game with a shutout, saving all 20 of the Senators’ shots on net.

The Rangers look to continue their winning ways when they take on the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.

The NHL has a long history of welcoming brothers into the professional league. Sometimes, brothers become rivals on competing teams, while others have shared the ice as teammates. There have even been brothers who have basked in the glory of a championship win together, hoisting the Stanley Cup up high.

Since the NHL was organized in 1917, many brothers have shared the ice. Read on to learn more about a few brothers who also were teammates.

1. The Sutter brothers

Starting off this list is the Sutter brothers.

There are actually seven brothers in the family, though only six played in the NHL: Brent, Brian, Ron, Duane, Rich and Darryl.

At one point or another, all six Sutter brothers played for either the Chicago Blackhawks or the St. Louis Blues.

Among the brothers, six Stanley Cups were won as players, including in 1982 and 1983, when Duane and Brent worked together on the Islanders for championship wins.

Rich and Ron were also teammates for a time, spending three years together with the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1980s and another three with the St. Louis Blues, coached by Brian.

2. The Niedermayer brothers

Scott and Rob Niedermayer both found success in the NHL, including together on the same team.

They played together for the Anaheim Ducks and won the Stanley Cup in 2007.

Even though Scott and Rob grew up together, they have spoken about how the NHL actually brought them closer.

"I learned a few things about him I didn't know," Scott said in 2007, per The Hockey News. "I got to know him a little better."

"I see him in the dressing room. He's a little more talkative and fun-loving than maybe I've seen him before. That's one area that is a bit new to me," he went on to say.

Before becoming teammates, they spent many years apart.

"In hockey season, ever since we were 15 or 16, we went our separate ways," Rob said, per The Hockey News. "We'd see each other a bit in the summer, but that was about it."

"This is a lot better. We see each more often. It's worked out really well," he continued.

3. The Staal brothers

There are four Staal brothers: Eric, Marc, Jordan and Jared.

Multiple Sutter brothers have played for the Carolina Hurricanes.

In 2003, Eric was drafted by the Hurricanes, and won the Stanley Cup with the team in 2006. In 2013, Eric, Jordan and Jared all played for the team.

In 2016, Eric went on to play for the New York Rangers, where he joined his brother Marc. Eric and Marc also played together for the Florida Panthers.

Jordan is the only brother still part of the NHL, and as of the 2024-2025 season, holds the title of captain for the Hurricanes.

4. The Richard brothers

The Richard brothers spent several years together as teammates.

Maurie, nicknamed "Rocket," played his whole career with the Montreal Canadiens, from 1942 to 1960.

Henri, the younger brother, nicknamed "Pocket Rocket," joined the Canadiens in 1955 with his brother. Henri won 11 Stanley Cups during his career, the most of any player, according to NHL Records. He retired from the league after the 1974-75 season.

5. The Hughes brothers

The Hughes brothers have taken the NHL by storm.

All three of the brothers were early picks in various NHL drafts.

Luke was the latest of the trio to join the NHL, as the fourth overall pick in the 2021 draft by the New Jersey Devils.

In 2018, the oldest Hughes brother, Quinn, was chosen by the Vancouver Canucks as the seventh overall pick. Jack was the first overall NHL draft pick in 2019, by the Devils.

Luke and Jack both play for the Devils, while Quinn remains part of the Canucks.

At the end of 2023, the three brothers all shared the ice for the first time.

"Of course you dream you're going to play with your brothers in the NHL one day," Jack said ahead of the game, per the New Jersey Devils' website. "You're in the basement, hanging out, playing, but you never really think it's going to become a reality. For it to happen, it's definitely pretty wild. It's three kids in one game."

The family became the ninth to have at least three brothers play the same game, according to the source. The last to do so prior to the Hughes brothers were the Staal brothers in April of the same year.

"I definitely didn't expect something like this to happen when we were kids, but it's really cool," Luke said. "That's the dedication shown by our parents... how hard they worked and how hard the three of us worked too. It's going to be fun."

"Of course, it's the dream," Quinn said of the game. "We probably talked about it as kids playing mini-sticks and stuff but as far as this year, they're going to want two points, I'm going to want two points, and everyone's worried about their individual game."

The Hughes brothers also made history as the first set of siblings to be on an EA Sports cover in 2024.

"We feel incredibly honored to be on the cover of NHL 25," said Quinn, per NHL.com. "Being featured alongside my brothers is the sort of thing you dream about as a kid but could never imagine happening in real life."

Wife of Senators’ Claude Giroux says GPS shows NHL star’s stolen car ‘actively driving’

It was a rough morning in the Giroux household Wednesday.

Ryanne Giroux, the wife of Ottawa Senators forward Claude Giroux, took to social media to reveal that the NHL star’s car was apparently stolen, and GPS tracking appeared to show the vehicle on the move as she posted her update.

"Good morning Ottawa! [Giroux’s] car was stolen last night and is currently actively driving… unable to get ahold of Ottawa Police until 10am… looking for other suggestions/to hear from other people in Ontario who have sadly had to deal with this recently," she said in a post on X.

Giroux, 36, responded to the news with a simple emoji expressing his frustration.

Ryanne Giroux tagged the police in her post. The department responded that an officer "has been dispatched."

"We're sorry to hear this. With any crime in progress, call 911 at the time of the incident. We understand an officer has been dispatched."

She posted an update that police were working the case and that they initially called 911 but weren’t positive that the stolen car was an "emergency."

Giroux has spent the majority of his NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers. He was traded to the Florida Panthers in 2022 and signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Senators the following season.

Maple Leafs' Morgan Rielly suspended 5 games for cross-checking Senators player in face after empty-net goal

The NHL suspended Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly for five games after a nasty cross-check on Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig following his empty-net goal on Saturday night.

With a few seconds left in the game, the Senators smelled victory when Greig had a breakaway toward an empty net with 5.1 seconds remaining in the game.

Greig decided to take a slap shot right in front of the net to ice the victory, 5-3, but Rielly took exception.

The veteran defenseman raced up to Greig following the goal and cross-checked him across the face, starting a fight between both teams as the horn sounded.

"In short, this is not a hockey play," NHL Player Safety said in its ruling to suspend Rielly. "This is an intentional, forceful strike to an opponent's head, using a stick as a weapon to exact retribution on an opponent well after a goal is scored."

The 29-year-old Rielly has never been disciplined over his 11 years in the NFL. However, along with his suspension, he will be forfeiting $195,312.50 based on his average annual salary under the league’s CBA.

Rielly has the option to appeal the suspension, though the evidence is very clear about why the league decided to dish out five games.

Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe called Rielly’s actions "appropriate," as the team felt Greig’s slap shot was not warranted at that moment.

Captain John Tavares also mentioned the Leafs will "stand our ground when necessary."

"Somebody was going to do it, especially after a play like that," Auston Matthews added, per ESPN. "I just don't think it's really necessary to go down there and 'hardest shot competition' into the net."

Greig, a rookie, may not have known about the unwritten rules in the NHL, but his veteran teammate Claude Giroux was aware of why it happened.

"The emotions sometimes will get to you," veteran forward Claude Giroux said. "I obviously don't like to see him getting in the face there, but there's not much really to say. Sometimes that kind of stuff happens."

Red Wings' Dylan Larkin lay motionless after taking hit to head, helped off ice following scary scene

There was a scary moment Saturday at Little Caesars Arena when Dylan Larkin lay motionless on the ice.

The Detroit Red Wings' captain and center took a hit to the side of the head from Mathieu Joseph during a scramble for the puck.

Joseph hit Larkin in the helmet while trying to push him off the puck.

Play went on a few seconds before a referee realized Larkin was sprawled out on the ice motionless.

A Senators player called on trainers to help Larkin.

A stretcher was brought onto the ice, but Larkin skated off with the help of a couple teammates and training staff.

The Red Wings said Larkin "continues to be evaluated by Detroit’s medical staff."

David Perron was ejected for cross-checking a Senator in the face while Larkin was on the ice.

Larkin was suspended a game in 2021 for punching Joseph in the face.

The Red Wings named Larkin their captain Jan. 13, 2021, roughly seven years after they selected him with the 15th pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.

After the draft, Larkin played at the University of Michigan for a year before heading to the AHL.

He also played for the United States National Team Development Program.

He is coming off a 32-goal, 47-assist season, both career highs.

Entering Saturday, Detroit was 14-7-4, and its 32 points tied for 10th in the NHL.

Brawl during NHL game results in unprecedented 10-minute penalties for every player on the ice

Altercations can happen during an NHL game, but referees tend to assess penalties in an effort to discourage players from crossing the line.

The players involved in a given scrum are usually the only ones who face punishment, but Monday's game between the Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers resulted in more wide-ranging penalties. Things were already chippy throughout the majority of the game, but a full-fledged fight broke out during the third period.

Shortly after the brawl ended, every skater who was on the ice at the time was thrown out of the game. The Panthers held a commanding 4-0 lead in the third period when Senators player Brady Tkachuk entered the game and had a quick breakaway.

Tkachuk's shot did not make it into the net, promoting the Senators' captain to try and score off the rebound. But, Panthers player Dmitry Kulikov proceeded to use his hockey stick to drive Tkachuk toward the boards.

Both teams then reacted, causing multiple altercations to break out. At one point, the situation appeared to calm down, until a punch was thrown and things began to escalate again.

Tkachuk was ultimately assessed with a two-minute penalty for goalie interference. He also received a two-minute penalty for roughing. Meanwhile, Kulikov was penalized two minutes for roughing.

But, the biggest moment happened when referee Garrett Rank made the unexpected announcement when there were around seven minutes remaining: "Every player on the ice has a 10-minute misconduct."

Given the penalties and the remaining playing time, the punishments were essentially player ejections. Despite the limited player availability for both teams for the rest of the game, the Panthers managed to score one more goal. The final score was 5-0.

Senators player Zack MacEwen had already been thrown out of the game before the full scale scrum.

As unusual as a 10-player ejection is, Tkachuk touted the importance of playing hockey fames with emotion.

"I mean, I don’t think it’s bad to play with emotion," Tkachuk said via The Associated Press. "I think when this group plays with emotion, we’re a tough team to beat, and I think we rely on our emotion and it shows that we care, shows that we care about what we’re doing here and about the guy next to us."

Later in the third period, two additional skaters received misconduct penalties. Those penalized created a total of 167 penalty minutes for the game.

However, the 2004 game between the Senators and Philadelphia Flyers still holds the record for most total penalty minutes in a game. Sixteen players were tossed from that game, resulting in 419 penalty minutes.

Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice downplayed the events of Monday's game.

"It’s just a hockey game," Maurice told reporters. "Both teams want to win, and you get a little snarly. It was fun, it was good."

Senators general manager Pierre Dorion resigns after botched trade leads NHL to dock first-round draft pick

The Ottawa Senators and general manager Pierre Dorion agreed to part ways on Wednesday, just hours after the NHL announced that the organization would forfeit a first-round draft pick following the 2021 botched trade involving forward Evgenii Dadonov.

Owner Michael Andlauer, who took over in September, announced the shakeup during a press conference on Wednesday, where he named president of hockey operations Steve Staios as interim general manager following Dorion’s resignation.

"With respect to today’s serious NHL ruling, the 73-page report that was shared with me last week stems from actions originated by our hockey club, unfortunately, that we were negligent in nature and our duty of care was ignored, which set off events that embarrassed the league and pissed off two other NHL clubs."

Andlauer said that while the incident had taken place before his tenure as owner, he "must respect the league’s decision."

Dadonov, who currently plays for the Dallas Stars, was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in July 2021. When Vegas attempted to trade him the following year to the Anaheim Ducks, the trade was invalidated after it was revealed that the Senators had failed to inform the team of his 10-team no-trade list, which the Ducks were on.

The resulting discipline, the NHL announced Wednesday, was a forfeiture of a first-round pick in either the 2024, 2025 or 2026 Drafts. The Senators will have "within 24 hours of the conclusion of the Draft Lottery for that year" to make their decision, the league added.

During Wednesday’s presser, Andlauer agreed with the characterization that the incident was the "last straw" with Dorion.

"A lot of the decisions that have been made could have been avoided," Andlauer added.

He also noted that he knew of the NHL’s probe into the botched trade before agreeing to purchase the team in June, but was told by the team’s previous ownership that it was a "non-issue."

This is just the latest blow for Senators.

The NHL announced last week that center Shane Pinto was suspended 41 games for violating the league’s gambling policy. The 22-year-old became the first player in the NHL to be suspended for a gambling violation since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for legalized sports wagering in 2018.

Ottawa Senators center Shane Pinto was suspended 41 games for violating the NHL’s gambling policy, the league announced on Thursday.

The 22-year-old becomes the first player in the NHL to be suspended for a gambling violation since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for legalized sports wagering in 2018.

The NHL released a statement announcing the suspension, adding that an investigation into the violation "found no evidence" that Pinto bet on NHL games.

"The NHL considers this matter closed, absent the emergence of new information, and will have no further comment," the statement added.

Pinto, playing in his fourth season with the Senators, released a statement taking responsibility for his actions leading up to the suspension.

"I want to apologize to the National Hockey League, the Ottawa Senators, my teammates, the fans and city of Ottawa and most importantly my family. I take full responsibility for my actions and look forward to getting back on the ice with my team."

The Senators also released a statement saying that the organization would "welcome" Pinto back "as one of our own" in time.

"Shane is a valued member of our hockey club; an engaging, intelligent young man who made poor decisions that have resulted in a suspension by the National Hockey League. We know he is remorseful for his mistakes.

"The Ottawa Senators fully support the NHL’s rules on gambling. While saddened to learn of this issue, the entire organization remains committed to Shane and will work together to do what is necessary to help provide the support to allow him to address his issues and become a strong contributor to our community."

The statement continued, "When the time is right and with the league’s blessing, we will welcome him back to the organization and embrace him as one of our own."

Pinto, a restricted free agent, has played three seasons with the Senators. According to ESPN, the suspension is retroactive to the start of the season.

Red Wings acquire Alex DeBrincat from Senators in exchange for two players and draft picks

The Detroit Red Wings acquired Michigan native Alex DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators on Sunday in exchange for two players and draft picks.

The Red Wings signed the 25-year-old DeBrincat, a two-time 41-goal scorer from Farmington Hills, to a four-year extension worth about $7.8 million annually.

In exchange for DeBrincat, the Senators acquired forward Dominik Kubalik, defensive prospect Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick and Detroit’s 2024 fourth-round selection.

DeBrincat has 187 goals, 186 assists and 373 points in 450 NHL games with the Senators and the Chicago Blackhawks, who selected him in the second round, 39th overall, in the 2016 draft.

Last season, he ranked among Ottawa's team leaders with 27 goals (fourth), 39 assists (fifth) and 66 points (fourth). He also had 11 power-play goals and six game winners.

The 5-foot-8, 178-pound DeBrincat was acquired by the Senators after playing five seasons with the Blackhawks.

The 27-year-old Kubalik played in all but one game last season with the Red Wings. He posted a career-high 25 assists and had 20 goals.

The 21-year-old Sebrango, a native of Ottawa, split last season with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins and the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. He recorded 12 points (one goal, 11 assists) in 23 games with Toledo and seven points (four goals, three assists) in 39 games with Grand Rapids.

Sebrango was an alternate captain with Team Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton and helped the Canadians capture a gold medal, recording two points (two assists), while skating in each of his team’s seven tournament games.

Michael Andlauer reaches agreement to purchase Ottawa Senators

A group led by Canadian businessman Michael Andlauer has reached an agreement to buy the NHL’s Ottawa Senators.

The team announced Tuesday that Andlauer and his group will purchase 90% of the club from the Melnyk family. The deal is reportedly worth nearly $1 billion, which is "give or take" what Commissioner Gary Bettman expected the team in Canada's capital to sell for.

"Michael represents everything we could have hoped to find coming into this process — a passionate owner who is committed to Ottawa," Senators chairman and governor Sheldon Plener said in a statement announcing the sale. "We believe it is a momentous day for the National Capital Region."

Anna and Olivia Melnyk, daughters of late former owner Eugene Melnyk, will retain 10% interest. Melnyk died of an undisclosed illness in March 2022 at age 62.

Andlauer, 57, is the founder and CEO of a health care group with transportation options for that sector and started a private equity company based in Toronto. He owned the American Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs from 2004-2015, then purchased the Ontario Hockey League's Belleville Bulls and moved them to Hamilton.

He has been alternate governor for the rival Montreal Canadiens since purchasing a share of the storied franchise in 2009. Andlauer must sell his interest in the Canadiens before his purchase of the Senators is complete, a process that also includes being approved by the NHL's Board of Governors.

"The short and long-term future of the team is incredibly bright, and I look forward to getting to know the team, the fanbase and the community."

Forbes values the Senators at $800 million, 24th out of the NHL’s 30 teams.

"I’ve always felt that we’ve been undervalued, so this, to me, is just an affirmation that our franchises are more valuable than Forbes or Sportico or many investment bankers have said," Bettman said recently. "While people focus on the revenue side, the system we have that gives every team an opportunity to compete is something that we don’t think, historically, we’ve been given enough credit for on the value proposition.

"Our competitive balance is extraordinary, and that should somehow be equating to higher values. I think you’re beginning to see that."

The Senators sale garnered plenty of interest, including competing bids from the likes of movie star Ryan Reynolds, Canadian R&B singer The Weeknd and rapper Snoop Dogg.

The team instead went to Andlauer and minority owners, who will now be tasked with finding a downtown site for a new arena to replace the suburban rink that has been the Senators' home since 1996.

As Ryan Reynolds looks to expand his ownership in sports to the NHL, he’s going to be up against another famous entertainer.

Reynolds, who is Canadian, is hoping to buy the Ottawa Senators, but Snoop Dogg is reportedly joining Los Angeles-based businessman Neko Sparks in a bid to purchase the team, per The Athletic.

Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., confirmed he was approached to be a part of an ownership group on ESPN’s First Take Tuesday, and he explained why he’s so passionate about doing so.

"I’ve been watching hockey for about 25 years now, and I’m watching more and more kids that look like me play the game, but I’m not seeing it offered to the kids here in America," Broadus said.

The plan that we have is to also go and build a Snoop youth hockey league outside of Canada so kids in urban communities can learn about hockey, play the sport and to get into this great thing that’s called hockey.

"The kids need to know that there is an option to play hockey if you look like me."

Sparks’ group is said to have "the majority of the ownership group comprised of people of color."

The Athletic added that Broadus is also brainstorming how else he can be involved.

"He’s coming up with ideas. And he’s legitimately excited," an industry leader told The Athletic. "He wants this team."

Some of those ideas reportedly go beyond being a face at Senators home games and hopping in the TSN booth for broadcasts.

Reynolds has shown he can have success as a sports team owner and won’t be backing down from Sparks’ group. He’s been linked to a separate ownership group that wants to bid on the team.

His Wrexham A.F.C. soccer team in Wales, co-owned by fellow actor Rob McElhenney, was just promoted in the English Football League after winning its league championship.

Patrick Kane took the practice ice Thursday morning in New York wearing a different sweater for the first time in his 16 years in the NHL.

On Thursday night at Madison Square Garden, Kane will be playing his first game as a New York Ranger.

Kane has only known the Chicago Blackhawks, the team he won three Stanley Cups with. But as the team’s struggles continued this season, Kane decided it was the time to exercise his right to approve a trade.

"You go back and forth in your head a bunch of times about a trade, but I just feel like this is such an amazing opportunity with what they have going on here in New York," Kane said in his first press conference, via the New York Post.

"And you know, when the option was still there to possibly make a move, it wasn’t the easiest decision, but I’m just really excited to be here. With this team, with the amount of skill and good players that they have here, it’s just another chance to make a run."

The New York Rangers are clearly making a push for the Stanley Cup, and Kane was long rumored to be the player they were after to help them get there. New York fell short last season after losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference finals. GM Chris Drury's plan was to acquire offensive firepower.

The Blackhawks were also prepared to move Kane, who didn’t play in the team's three games before he was dealt. It’s definitely a tough pill to swallow because of the history he’s had with the team. Kane was a cornerstone for Chicago in their 2010, 2013 and 2015 Stanley Cup victories, but the Blackhawks need to rebuild and Kane is looking for more rings.

New York’s energy is already rubbing off on Kane, and some of that has to do with the other team at MSG — the New York Knicks — loving his arrival as well.

Knicks star guard Jalen Brunson was already spotted with his No. 88 Kane jersey Wednesday night.

"I went to the practice facility yesterday and [Brunson’s] dad was in there," Kane said, per the Post. "Jalen FaceTimed his dad, and then he put me on the phone. So it was good. I was talking with him for a little bit, and he said he was looking forward to coming to a game and vice versa. I’d love to go to a Knicks game and support him as well."

It also helps that a familiar face is in the building for Kane in Artemi Panarin. His first two seasons were in Chicago before joining the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"Today’s the first time I’ve seen him in a long time," Kane said of Panarin. "Just being able to be around him – definitely missed that over the last five, six, seven years. Just picked up right where we left off."

Kane is expected to play with Panarin and Vincent Trocheck on the Rangers’ second line, but head coach Gerard Gallant will show his plans for his new winger when they take on the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m. ET.
