Astros picked to beat Mariners as Luis Castillo's struggles continue with a 6.57 ERA this season

Sometimes you have divisions in baseball that have everyone looking like juggernauts. Other times, they look like complete disasters. I personally think they should do away with divisions and just do league play, that way the best teams all get in. I suppose that the three Wild Card spots help. We aren't here to debate the playoff and structure; we are here to cash a bet on the Mariners and Astros game.

Coming into this season, I felt that the biggest question about the Seattle Mariners would be how they could respond to falling short in the postseason. The other concern I had was the issue between Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh in the World Baseball Classic. The answer, for now, is that things are not going well. Perhaps there is no issue in the clubhouse with the players, but there certainly are issues on the field. The team is 21-23 overall and just 9-12 away from Seattle. For a lineup full of hitters, the team is hitting just .230.

Their pitching has continued to excel, which is probably the lone reason the team hasn't been a complete disaster. As a team, they are pitching to a 3.63 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. One guy who is hurting their numbers is today's starter, Luis Castillo. For the year, he is 0-4 with a 6.57 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. He has allowed four or more earned runs in three straight starts and four of his past six outings. The Mariners are just 2-6 in his eight starts this year. He hasn't received a ton of run support, but he certainly has put them behind in the games. To make matters worse, Astros hitters are batting .274 against him.

The Houston Astros are also struggling to find their footing this year. For a long time, it seemed like no matter who was on the field or roster, they were able to make it work. They would lose big name after big name and keep winning. Unfortunately for them, it seems not to be the case this season. They are just 17-27 for the year and 10-12 at home. Offensively, they are fine -- hitting .257 overall, but their pitching staff has been brutal with a collective ERA of 5.54 and a 1.58 WHIP.

Their starter today is Mike Burrows, owner of a 2-4 record with a 5.04 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. He has been worse on his home mound than on the road. At home, he has allowed 13 earned runs over 20.1 innings. He is coming off two strong starts in a row, both quality outings. This also includes his best start of the year with seven scoreless innings and just three hits allowed against the Reds. He faced Seattle earlier in the year and allowed 11 hits and six runs over six innings.

I have a player prop that I'm taking today -- Yordan Alvarez 2+ total bases. He has feasted on Castillo's pitching over the years, going 10-for-22 with four home runs and just two strikeouts. To me, that means he is putting the ball in play even if he isn't always getting a hit. I like his odds at -123, and normally I only play props at plus money. His home run number is +235, which is worth a sprinkle.

I am going to take the Astros today. I really don't like what I've seen out of Castillo. Burrows has some ugly numbers, but he may be locking in at the moment. Neither team is in great form, and the Astros finally broke their losing streak last night. I like the Astros at +108. Let's take them to win.

Twins take down Mariners for second straight extra-innings win behind Carlos Correa RBI single

Carlos Correa’s flare to right field evaded a sliding Teoscar Hernández and scored automatic runner Donovan Solano as the Minnesota Twins won their second straight game in extra innings, beating the Seattle Mariners 4-3 in 10 innings on Monday night.

Solano moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Christian Vázquez, and Ryan Jeffers reached when no Seattle player covered first base on another bunt. Correa then sent a soft liner to right, where Hernández tried, but failed, to make a sliding catch for the third out.

"I’ve hit for too many double plays already, so the last thing I wanted is to put the ball on the ground and it worked out fine," Correa said.

Jorge Lopez (4-2) retired all three batters he faced in the top of the 10th for Minnesota, which continued its second-half surge.

The Twins are 9-2 since the All-Star break, including three wins in five meetings with Seattle, and have gone from a half-game behind Cleveland in the AL Central to four games ahead of the Guardians. Minnesota rallied Sunday with three runs in the bottom of the ninth and won in 12 innings to sweep the Chicago White Sox.

"The vibes are great," Correa said. "We’ve faced some good pitchers. … To be able to come back against them says a lot about this lineup and the big strides that we’re making in the second half. I think we’ve been playing really good baseball ever since the break and let’s hope we keep doing that."

Paul Sewald (3-1) pitched the 10th for the Mariners.

Max Kepler had an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game for the Twins after Kolten Wong hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer with two outs in the top of the inning for Seattle.

"Heck of an effort to come back late like that in the game," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "Tough way to start the road trip, but the fight in our guys. Obviously, a huge hit by Kolten, which has not been an easy year for him. To step up in that spot and come through like that was awesome to see, but disappointing to lose the ballgame."

Tom Murphy added his sixth homer in his last 14 games for Seattle.

Trevor Larnach hit an RBI triple for Minnesota after he was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul earlier in the day after Byron Buxton went on the paternity list. He tied the game in the fifth, scoring Kepler after his leadoff single was the first hit for Minnesota off Mariners starter Luis Castillo.

Christian Vázquez followed with an RBI single to put the Twins ahead.

"We believe, you know," Kepler said. "It doesn’t matter if we don’t score in nine innings, there’s always a chance to win the ballgame. You know, in baseball, things can turn real quick, at any time. Everyone is just believing, doing their job, putting good swings on it and making good pitches."

Minnesota's Kenta Maeda has resembled his 2020 Cy Young Award runner-up form since his return from the injured list in June. He surrendered one run over 6 1/3 innings on Monday and owns a 2.48 ERA over his last six starts, with 44 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings.

"He’s pitching like a young stud right now," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said.

Castillo gave up two runs on four hits and struck out nine.

The All-Star right-hander didn’t allow a baserunner until walking rookie Edouard Julien with one out in the fourth. But Castillo caught Julien with a pickoff move to first to face the minimum through four innings.

The Seattle Mariners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning off the Toronto Blue Jays’ ace and never looked back in their win.

It was the Mariners' first postseason game since Oct. 22, 2001.

Rookie phenom Julio Rodriguez led the game off getting hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Eugenio Suarez’s RBI double gave the Mariners the early 1-0 lead. The next batter, Cal Raleigh, the man who sent the Mariners to the postseason with a walk-off home run, belted a two-run blast.

That's all Luis Castillo needed.

Castillo has been everything the Mariners could have hoped for since they acquired him at the trade deadline, and he continued to show why he’s now their ace.

He tossed 108 pitches in 7⅓ scoreless innings, allowing just six hits without walking a batter while striking out five. He only faced two batters while a runner was in scoring position.

Andres Munoz was the first man out of Seattle's bullpen, and it turned out he'd be the only man they needed to close the door. He retired all but one batter he faced to nail down the victory.

Suarez drove in his second run with a fielder's choice in the fifth, while Rodriguez reached base three times — twice he was hit by a pitch, and he singled.

Mariners extend ace they acquired at deadline with five-year, $108 million deal

Two months ago, Luis Castillo had no idea where he would call home past the MLB trade deadline.

On Saturday, he marked Seattle as his home for a long while.

The Mariners extended Castillo with a five-year deal worth $108 million.

"Every baseball player wants to have a dream like this become a reality," Castillo said in a statement. "I’m happy I was able to accomplish this with the Mariners, and I want to thank everybody in the organization for treating me so well."

The Mariners acquired Castillo from the Cincinnati Reds days before the deadline, solidifying what was already a stacked rotation with defending AL Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray, Logan Gilbert, Marco Gonzalez, and George Kirby.

Seattle is set to make the postseason for the first time since 2001, when they won 116 games. A postseason appearance for the Mariners will break the longest postseason drought in North American professional sports.

Castillo was the best pitcher on the trade market, as Cincinnati is in a huge rebuild. It seemed like he was on the trade block for years, but the Reds finally pulled the trigger as Castillo was slated to reach free agency after the 2023 season.

If Castillo pitches at least 180 innings in 2027, the deal would then be extended through the following year, and the Mariners would owe the pitcher another $25 million in 2028.

Castillo will receive $10 million next year atop his $7 million signing bonus, and will earn $22.75 million in each year from 2024 to 2027.

The right-hander has a full no-trade clause in the first three years of the deal,

In nine starts as a Mariner, Castillo has pitched to a 2.83 ERA while striking out 10.7 batters per nine innings with a 1.09 WHIP.

Mariners take advantage of Yankees base running blunders in walk-off win

In a game in which runs were hard to come by, the New York Yankees ran themselves out of numerous innings.

In the 1-0 victory for the Seattle Mariners, the Yankees ran into four outs on the base paths in extra innings alone.

In the 10th inning, Andrew Benintendi and Tim Locastro tried to do a double steal but Benintendi left the base early and was picked off by Mariners pitcher Paul Sewald.

In the 11th inning, Aaron Hicks hit a line drive right at second basemen Adam Frazier and Miguel Andújar froze, taking a step toward third base after the ball was caught by Frazier. Frazier fired the ball to J.P. Crawford to double up Andújar as he could not get back to the base in time.

In the 12th inning, after Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a ground ball right back to pitcher Matthew Festa, Jose Trevino was caught between second and third base and got into a rundown.

The Mariners tagged out Trevino trying to advance to third base. While the rundown was occurring Kiner-Falefa tried to advance to second base to "replace" Trevino as the extra-innings automatic base runner, but the Mariners were all over it and forced Kiner-Falefa out of the baseline on another double play.

In the 11th and 12th innings the Yankees only sent two batters up in each inning due to their base running mistakes.

The Yankees bullpen was able to match scoreless innings with the Mariners until the 13th, when Jonathan Loaisiga surrendered the walk-off single to pinch hitter Luis Torrens.

Matt Brash picked up the win for the Mariners after stranding the bases loaded in the top of the 13th inning.

RAYS' YANDY DIAZ TRIED TO STAY IN SEPERATE HOTEL FROM TEAM AMID HAUNTING RUMORS

The starting pitchers were incredible: Luis Castillo went eight shutout innings while only giving up three hits and striking out seven batters while Gerrit Cole threw seven shutout innings, only yielding four hits and striking out eight hitters.

It was a great bounce-back start for Cole as last week in Yankees Stadium this same Mariners team ambushed him for a six-run first inning.

For Castillo, it was more of a continuation of the start he had last week against the Yankees, where he threw seven strong innings, only giving up three runs in his Mariner debut.

With the win the Mariners maintain their position in the second spot of the AL Wild Card, a half game up on the Tampa Bay Rays.

Luis Castillo to make Mariners debut against Yankees

All-Star Luis Castillo will make his debut for the Seattle Mariners when he starts against the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

The Mariners acquired the right-hander from Cincinnati on Friday, hoping to bolster their rotation as they chase their first playoff berth since 2001. Their postseason drought is the longest in the four major North American professional sports.

At 55-48, Seattle is currently 12 games behind Houston in the AL West standings, but is in second place for one of three wild card playoff spots. Manager Scott Servais said Sunday that Castillo will start the series finale in New York.

Perhaps the top starter on this year's trade market, Castillo joins a rotation with Logan Gilbert, Robbie Ray, Marco Gonzales and Chris Flexen.

Castillo's last start for the Reds came last Wednesday. The 29-year-old was 4-4 with a 2.86 ERA for last-place Cincinnati this season. He has 90 strikeouts and just 28 walks in 85 innings.

Marlins win behind Pablo López's dominant outing over Reds

Pablo López allowed two hits and tied his career high with 11 strikeouts over seven dominant innings and the Miami Marlins edged the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 Tuesday night.

Joey Wendle hit a two-run single off Hunter Greene as Miami for the third time in nine games.

A day after Cincinnati piled up 11 runs in a romp, López turned in a stopper-like performance for the Marlins. He overcame Mike Moustakas’s solo homer to finish with a flourish, retiring his final nine batters and striking out the side in the sixth. He didn’t walk anybody while retiring 21 of his last 22 Cincinnati batters.

"That was really fun," López said. "It has been a while since I felt that good. That's one of those starts I really needed. It's a good start to build on."

The Reds had won nine of their previous 13 games.

"López had as good a stuff as we’ve seen all year," Reds manager David Bell said. "He had a good fastball. You didn’t know which way he was going to cut it. He had a good sinker and great changeup."

López (7-5), the National League April Pitcher of the Month after going 3-0, allowed a single to the first batter he faced, Jonathan India, before retiring the next 12. Moustakas snapped that run, leading off the fifth with his sixth homer of the season.

López was happy to be able to shake off the homer.

"Giving up a homer is not ideal, but solo shots aren't going to hurt you that much," he said. "I was able to turn the page."

He was even prouder about issuing no walks.

"I wasn't shying away from the strike zone," he pointed out.

López admitted to a bit of lobbying one more inning.

"You never want the ball taken out of your hand," he said. "Those are decisions that are out of my hands. I'll just be proud of the start."

"He did a good job," Miami manager Don Mattingly said. "We're going to need him in the second half. We're going to take care of him. We want him to stay on a good track."

Anthony Bass kept the streak alive with a perfect eighth. Tanner Scott closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save.

Greene almost matched López out-for-out, allowing three hits through the first four scoreless innings before the Marlins broke through in the fifth when Jesús Sánchez singled with one out and went to third on Luke Williams' single. Williams stole second while Jacob Stallings was striking out, but Wendle drove in both runners with a single to right – the first of his three straight hits.

The Marlins collected nine hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings against Greene (3-12), who struck out six and walked one. The rookie right-hander is 0-5 over his last eight starts since his last win on June 6 against Arizona.

Marlins third baseman Luke Williams lunged to snare Brandon Drury’s sharp one-hopper and made a leaping throw that first baseman Lewin Díaz stretched to haul in on one hop for the first out of the first inning.

Reds LF Tommy Pham hustled over to the line to scoop up Stallings’ leadoff single and threw the Marlins catcher out trying to stretch the hit into a double in the third.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Marlins: INF Garrett Cooper (right wrist contusion) was placed on the 10-day on Tuesday, retroactive to Sunday. Cooper was hit by a pitch on Saturday in Pittsburgh.

Reds: CF Nick Senzel seemed to jar his right shoulder making a diving catch of Bryan De La Cruz’s sinking liner leading off the fifth. After a visit from a trainer, Senzel stayed in the game.

DJ LeMahieu capped his 34th birthday by sliding across the plate on Alexis Díaz’s second straight wild pitch in the 10th inning, and the New York Yankees rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 Wednesday night and stop a three-game losing streak.

Luis Severino allowed three consecutive homers in a span of five pitches in the second inning as Cincinnati built a 4-0 lead, then left with right shoulder tightness.

"Today I woke up feeling not that great," Severino said. "I felt a little tight shoulder going to warm up and do all my stuff in the bullpen. It stayed the same in the game."

Cincinnati allowed five unearned runs, four after second baseman Jonathan India’s error on Anthony Rizzo’s potential inning-ending double-play grounder in the third. The Reds fell behind 5-4 and went ahead 6-5 before Giancarlo Stanton homered to the short porch in right field off Ian Gibaut in the eighth.

LeMahieu started the 10th inning on second base. Aaron Judge struck out against Díaz (2-1), Anthony Rizzo was intentionally walked and Stanton fell behind 0-2 in the count.

LUIS SEVERINO LEAVES START WITH RIGHT SHOULDER TIGHTNESS

Díaz threw a slider that went off the mitt of catcher Tyler Stephenson. Díaz paused to grab the rosin bag, then threw a slider that bounced off Stephenson toward the first base dugout as LeMahieu scampered home ahead of the catcher’s throw to Díaz covering the plate.

"It’s a good birthday, but to play in the big leagues on my birthday, that’s good enough," LeMahieu said. "But a walk-off like this is pretty fun."

New York got its big league-high 11th walk-off win and 27th come-from-behind victory, avoiding what would have been its first four-game losing streak this year.

Michael King (6-1), the seventh Yankees pitcher, escaped first-and-third, no-outs trouble in the 10th when Matt Reynolds struck out and Kyle Farmer grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.

"Not perfect," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "This season’s not going to be that way. So, just glad we were able to kind of continue to grind and grind."

Farmer hit a 431-foot drive to left on Severino’s slider, Mike Moustakas connected on a changeup and Stuart Fairchild on a 92 mph fastball.

After Boone and an athletic trainer came to the mound, Severino finished the inning. He went to the mound to start the third and threw a warmup pitch, then walked off and was replaced by rookie JP Sears.

Severino averaged 94.1 mph with 18 fastballs, down from his season average of 96.1 mph.

"I talked to him after the first inning, he was just a little leery of letting it go, but he kept saying, `I feel really good,'" Boone said. "Something was telling him to hold back a little bit. That was the biggest thing."

This was the third time Severino allowed three homers in a game, the first since Aug. 28, 2017, against Cleveland.

Cincinnati hit three straight homers for the first time since May 5, 2019, against San Francisco’s Jeff Samardzija when Eugenio Suárez, Jesse Winker and Derek Dietrich went deep.

"That was a great way to get off to a good start," Reds manager David Bell said.

New York allowed three straight homers for the second time this year. Gerrit Cole did it June 9 in Minnesota when Luis Arraez, Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa took him deep.

Joey Votto drove in two runs and Stephenson hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth off Sears as the Reds saw their season-high five-game winning streak snapped.

Gleyber Torres hit an RBI single after India’s error, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa capped a five-run third with a three-run double.

Cincinnati starter Mike Minor allowed five runs — one earned — in four innings.

Seeking his second straight NL batting title, Soto raised his average to .325 with a three-hit night and is four points ahead of the Los Angeles' Dodgers Trea Turner. Soto's former Nationals teammate had a three-hit game at Colorado.

Soto led off the sixth against Luis Castillo with an opposite-field drive to left that bounced off the top of the wall and into the stands. He homered to the opposite field again in the seventh for his 29th homer and third in two nights.

"I always enjoy matchups with hitters like Soto," Castillo said through an interpreter. "It is part of the game. I always enjoy it."

Soto, who turns 23 on Oct. 25, has 11 multihomer games, one behind Eddie Mathews for the most before a player's 23rd birthday.

"He doesn’t give at-bats away," manager Dave Martinez said. "He works counts and stays on the ball. He comes ready to play. I definitely think he should be considered for MVP. The numbers he’s putting up are incredible."

"He’s showing his teammates that he comes every day to win baseball games. He wants to do that. It’s fun to watch him."

Patrick Corbin (9-15) allowed four hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings with seven strikeouts and four walks as last-place Washington won for the fourth time in five games.

"I worked on a couple of things in my bullpen and when I was throwing every day, like throwing over my leg more and throwing quality strikes," Corbin said. "It was just a good step. Hopefully, I can finish the season with another good one and take it into the offseason."

Mason Thompson finished the seventh, former Red-Tanner Rainey pitched the eighth and Kyle Finnegan gave up two runs in the ninth before getting his 11th save in 14 chances.

Cincinnati dropped 5 1/2 games back of St. Louis for the second NL wild card with nine games left. The Reds have lost four of six on a season-long 10-game homestand.

Castillo (8-16) broke a tie with Corbin for the most losses in the majors, allowing two runs, six hits and three walks in six innings. He is 2-6 in his last nine starts, which includes four losses in which the Reds scored one run in each game.

Cincinnati struck out 11 times, was 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine runners. The Reds had the bases loaded with one out in the third, but Nick Castellanos and Joey Votto struck out, then had runners at the corners in the fourth before Castillo grounded out.

"Corbin made pitches when he had to," Reds manager David Bell sad. "His slider was his key pitch especially to our right handed hitters. Those guys, Castellanos and Votto, have been doing it all season. They’re not going to come through every time. It’s such a tough game. I am sure they can’t wait to be in that same situation tomorrow."

Josh Bell's RBI grounder in the first and Soto's home runs built a 3-0 lead.

Pinch-hitter Max Schrock had an RBI triple into the right-field corner in the ninth and scored on Tucker Barnhart's grounder.

PASSING BRYCE

Soto’s first inning walk was his 131st of the season, a Washington single-season franchise record. He went into the game tied with Bryan Harper, who drew 130 walks in 2018.

NET LOSS

Washington third baseman Carter Kieboom leaned into the protective netting along the third base line to catch Joey Votto’s popup in the third inning, but third base umpire Angel Hernandez ruled that the ball grazed the netting just before Kieboom caught it, making it no play.

Luis Castillo struck out 10 while outpitching Walker Buehler, Kyle Farmer doubled twice against his former team and the Cincinnati Reds snapped the Los Angeles Dodgers’ six-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory Friday night.

"We were playing a high quality team," Castillo said through an interpreter. "It felt like a playoff game. Because of that, I was focused today. I felt a lot of adrenaline with the fans behind me."

The Reds have dropped their last seven series to slip to fourth in the NL wild-card standings, a half-game behind San Diego and a full game behind second-place St. Louis.

The Dodgers, already assured at least a wild-card spot, began the day one game behind San Francisco in the NL West.

Castillo (8-15) didn’t allow a runner past second base in 6 1-3 shutout innings. He threw a season-high 111 pitches and gave up five hits and two walks.

"I told Luis that I’ve seen him pitch a lot of great games, but tonight was my favorite," Reds manager David Bell said.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Castillo featured a fastball and changeup and mixed in a changeup.

"We chased at times and expanded when we shouldn’t have," he said.

"Regardless of how we’re going, Castillo is going to present challenges," Roberts added. "We knew runs were going to be hard to come by tonight.,"

Reds reliever Luis Cessa went 1 2-3 scoreless innings. Michael Lorenzen allowed Matt Beaty's RBI single with two outs in the ninth before getting pinch-hitter Albert Pujols to fly out for his fourth save.

Buehler (14-4) was hoping to notch his career-high 15th win, but the Reds reached him for three runs on six hits and two walks in six innings.

The Reds broke through against Buehler in the fifth after Farmer led off with a double. Tucker Barnhart hit an RBI single and excitedly clapped his hands and pointed at the Cincinnati dugout to celebrate.

Nick Castellanos and Joey Votto hit back-to-back singles with one out in the sixth and they both scored on Farmer's double.

"It was a big win, obviously," Farmer said. "I love a lot of guys over there. They are great friends of mine, but it is fun to play them."

CLOSE CALL

The Dodgers narrowly avoided what would have been their sixth shutout loss of the season.

Dodgers: Gavin Lux was scratched before the game from his start in left field with what Roberts described as a right forearm contusion suffered when a ball got away from a pitching machine. X-rays were negative, Roberts said. Beaty replaced Lux in the lineup.

Reds: OF Jesse Winker (intercostal strain) was activated from the 10-day injured list and OF Tyler Naquin (bruised ribs) was placed on the injured list. Winker made his 17th career start and first appearance since 2019 in center field.

Joey Votto slammed a three-run homer, Luis Castillo pitched seven innings of one-run ball and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Miami Marlins 6-1 on Thursday night.

Votto's 428-foot shot into the seats in right-center — his team-leading 27th homer — highlighted the Reds' four-run fourth after Miami right-hander Nick Neidert had faced the minimum in the first three innings.

"Joey Votto, every night he does something cool," said Reds second baseman Jonathan India, who had two hits, an RBI and scored on the homer. "It's so fun to watch, and he's been a leader all year for us. When Joey goes, we go."

Castillo (7-12), averaging 97 mph on his four-seam fastball and sinker, allowed eight hits and struck out seven. Michael Lorenzen retired the Marlins in order in the eighth, and Tony Santillan did the same in ninth.

"I felt spectacular today, commanding the zone and commanding all my pitches as well," Castillo said.

Kyle Farmer also hit a run-scoring double for the Reds, who rebounded after dropping two in a row and the series to the depleted Chicago Cubs.

Cincinnati moved within a game of the San Diego Padres for the second NL wild-card slot.

"They're all going to be really important the rest of the way," Reds manager David Bell said. "I was just really happy with just our whole day today."

Neidert (1-2) — who got his first win of the season Aug. 4 but was demoted to Triple-A Jacksonville right after — was recalled before the game to start. He allowed four runs and five hits through five innings.

"Outside of the fourth inning, I had a good outing," he said. "Even in the fourth inning, if I could have minimized the damage it would have been a good night."

Jorge Alfaro had an RBI single in the fourth for the last-place Marlins.

MOVING ON UP

The 37-year-old Votto is moving up the Reds' all-time lists, and he’s surrounded by Hall of Fame company. He’s now tied with Johnny Bench with 1,091 runs scored, behind only Pete Rose (1,741) and Barry Larkin (1,329). His 322 homers trail only Bench (389) and Frank Robinson (324). Votto has homered 15 times since the All-Star break.

BRIGHT SPOT

The Marlins' Miguel Rojas got two more hits. He has hits in 22 of 26 games in the second half, including 10 multi-hit games.

TRANSACTIONS

Besides promoting Neidert, the Marlins brought up RHP Bryan Mitchell, sent LHP Daniel Castano and 3B Deven Marrero back to Triple-A, and designated RHP Luis Madero for assignment.

TRAINERS ROOM

Marlins: Placed RHP Jorge Guzman (right elbow soreness) on the 10-day injured list. He was promoted from Triple-A last weekend and had a couple rough outings against Atlanta.

Reds: OF Jessie Winker (intercostal strain) may be out longer than initially expected. The 28-year-old All-Star went on the 10-day injured list on Monday after he aggravated a strain of the muscles in the rib cage the previous day. ... The Reds reversed OF Nick Senzel’s option and placed him back on the injured list. He has fluid on his surgically repaired left knee and will go to the Arizona facility for rehab. There is no timetable for his return.

Marlins right-hander Elieser Hernandez (0-0, 2.84 ERA) will be on the mound Friday night against Reds right-hander Sonny Gray (4-6, 4.47). Suárez HR off Hader in 9th lifts Reds over Brewers 4-3

Eugenio Suárez hit a leadoff home run in the ninth inning against All-Star closer Josh Hader and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 Saturday night in a game that included three ejections.

Suárez hit a 2-0 pitch from Hader (3-1) into the second deck of the right-field bleachers for his 18th homer.

"It was a big moment for me and for the team," Suárez said. "Big win, man, before the All-Star break. Everybody knows that Hader has a really good fastball. He's one of the best closers in the game. In my mind, I was like, 'don't let him beat you.'"

Prior to the go-ahead homer, Suárez was hitless in his previous 10 at-bats and is 3 for 38 (.079) against the Brewers in 2021.

"It was a game-winner," Reds manager David Bell said. "And, it came against one of the best in the game."

Heath Hembree took care of Milwaukee in the bottom half for his second consecutive save and sixth overall, helping the Reds pull within five games of the NL Central-leading Brewers.

Josh Osich (2-0) got one out in the eighth for the win.

Tyrone Taylor hit a two-run homer off Reds reliever Brad Brach in the eighth to tie it at 3.

Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta, who will be replacing teammate Brandon Woodruff on the NL All-Star team, held Cincinnati hitless until All-Star Nick Castellanos connected in the sixth for his 18th homer, a three-run shot that made it 3-1.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell then came out to get Peralta and was ejected by plate umpire Gabe Morales for arguing about the 2-2 pitch to Castellanos.

"That was the pitch," Counsell said about what got him tossed. "I feel like it's been a rough series for the umpires. So, yeah, there's a lot of guys upset, both teams."

Counsell was ejected for the third time this season and for the 21st time overall.

Milwaukee star Christian Yelich was ejected by first base umpire John Libka in the bottom of the sixth after reaching on a wild throw by pitcher Vladimir Gutiérrez. Yelich turned toward second just enough that second baseman Jonathan India slapped a tag on him, Libka signaled out, and Yelich became irate, tossing his helmet.

"In the umpire's judgment, there was something," Counsell said of Yelich's inadvertent twitch. "That's just a clear case of an umpire kind of making something up or thinking he sees something that has no influence on the game, and then making a call. It was a poor call, and it cost us a baserunner."

Third base umpire Doug Eddings ejected Joey Votto in top of the eighth after the Reds star struck out swinging.

Gutiérrez allowed one run on five hits in six solid innings.

This is the third of seven consecutive games between these divisional foes. They’re playing a four-game series in Milwaukee this week and meet the Reds again in a three-game series in Cincinnati immediately after the All-Star break.

The Brewers won the opener of this series 5-3 on Thursday. The Reds got a measure of revenge Friday thanks to Wade Miley and his 2-0 gem.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Reds: RHP Michael Lorenzen came out of his recent rehab start in good shape. Manager David Bell said that Lorenzen would stay with Triple-A Louisville, pitch on consecutive days and possibly be activated on Friday. He hasn’t pitched all season due to a right shoulder injury. … INF Mike Moustakas has made a slight improvement as he recovers from a right-heel injury.

Brewers: C Manny Piña got crossed up on a pitch and barehanded the ball in a freak play Friday night. He played through considerable pain and even managed to get a base hit. "It didn’t bother him catching or throwing," Counsell said. "It was a little bothersome hitting. He’s going to be OK."

REDS STATS

With tonight’s 4-3 win, the Reds have taken five of six games from the Brewers at American Family Field and lead the season series 7-5. They improve to 24-13 against NL Central opponents. Their 25 come from behind victories are third most in MLB, trailing only Boston (29) and Tampa Bay (26).

BREWERS MAKE IT THREE STRAIGHT

Catcher Omar Narváez joined Peralta as a first-time All-Star when it was announced before the game that Narváez was named as a replacement for the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina, who replaced the Giants’ Buster Posey.

With the late addition of Narváez, the Brewers now have a franchise record five All-Stars (pitchers Peralta, Woodruff, Hader and Corbin Burnes) for the third consecutive time (2018, 2019 and 2021).

Pérez's RBI single caps 4-run 9th as Royals beat Reds 7-6

Salvador Pérez’s walk-off single capped Kansas City's four-run rally as the Royals beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 Tuesday night.

The Royals scored six runs off the Reds’ bullpen in the final two innings and Pérez got his third game-ending hit this season.

"There are not a lot of people in their major league career that get an opportunity to celebrate a walk-off," Royals manager Mike Matheny said of Pérez’s heroics. "You can attribute it to as much luck as you want to. I’m not buying it. There are just special people in that situation, and Salvy is one of them."

Trailing 6-3 to start the ninth, the Royals got the tying run on second with no outs without the benefit of a hit. Ryan O’Hearn walked and Hunter Dozier was hit by a pitch. Michael A. Taylor then rolled a ground ball through the legs of Eugenio Suarez at third, scoring O’Hearn.

With one out, Nicky Lopez flared a ball into short left field, scoring both runners to tie it 6-6. He went to second on the throw, then advanced to third on an error on left fielder Aristides Aquino. Whit Merrifield walked and Andrew Benintendi struck out, bringing Pérez to the plate.

"I kind of changed my sights a little bit," Lopez said. "I kind of got a little pull-happy (earlier in the game). I tried to see something a little deeper. I got jammed pretty good, but I was able to get it to the left side."

Richard Lovelady (2-0) picked up the win. Heath Hembree (2-4) took the loss.

"They’ve been so good," Reds manager David Bell said of his bullpen. "With a five-run lead, the way they’ve been pitching, you expect them to get it done. If a couple of plays go a different way it could be a different outcome."

Kyle Farmer and Tyler Stephenson each had three hits for the Reds. Farmer’s three hits included a double and a two-run home run.

Luis Castillo, whose record stood a 2-9 on June 10, turned in his fifth straight quality start, but to no avail. He allowed one run and three hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked one.

The Reds started the game with the first two runners reaching base but couldn’t score because of an inning-ending double-play grounder by Joey Votto. Bubic wasn’t as fortunate in the third, allowing his first run on an opposite-field double by Jonathan India. Stephenson reached with a single, and both runners scored on a two-out triple that just eluded Benintendi in left.

Farmer’s seventh home run of the season gave the Reds a 5-0 lead in the fourth. Farmer hit a curve ball 407 feet into the seats in left center, scoring Tyler Naquin.

Taylor homered leading off the bottom of the fifth for the Royals.

"It’s not the first one," Matheny said of the late comeback. "To see it come when we haven’t been playing our best baseball and to still have that hunger and belief, if they don’t have that belief, it doesn’t happen. There are a lot of teams with a lot of wins that don’t necessarily do what we just did."

The Reds got that run back in the seventh on a broken-bat single by Suarez, scoring Nick Castellanos.

Benintendi hit a two-run home run off Cionel Pérez in the eighth to bring the Royals to 6-3.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Reds 3B Mike Moustakas returned from a rehab start at Triple-A Louisville after experiencing soreness in his right foot. He last played on May 18 before going on the 10-day Injured List with a right heel contusion.

The Reds will look to RHP Sonny Gray (1-4, 3.27 ERA) to claim the three-game series. Gray will make his 200th start of his major league career. In his first start after coming off the 10-day Injured List with a right groin strain, Gray allowed one run and five hits in five innings against the Cubs.

Royals RHP Brady Singer (3-6, 4.74 ERA) will make his first career start against Cincinnati. He lasted just three innings because of a high pitch count. He gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Farmer, Stephenson rally Reds past Padres 5-4 in 9th

Kyle Farmer hit a tying homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and Tyler Stephenson drove in the winning run with a two-out single to rally the Cincinnati Reds past the San Diego Padres 5-4 on Thursday night.

Farmer smashed a shot to center field with one out against closer Mark Melancon (1-1), who then loaded the bases before Stephenson lined a 1-0 pitch down the right-field line.

"It was a cutter," said Stephenson, the Reds' rookie catcher. "A simple swing, right field. My favorite one so far."

Cincinnati salvaged the rain-delayed series finale and finally stopped the Padres, who had beaten the Reds six times in the past two weeks while winning 11 of 12 overall.

Manny Machado gave San Diego a 4-3 lead when he scored from second on a throwing error by rookie third baseman Alejo Lopez in the eighth.

Padres reliever Drew Pomeranz put two runners on in the Reds half of the eighth but got Joey Votto to fly out and Lopez to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Pinch-hitter Tommy Pham drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the Padres seventh to tie the score and chase Cincinnati starter Luis Castillo, who allowed three runs and five hits with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Art Warren (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the Reds.

"That was tough. Long night. We had to fight for everything we got," Padres manager Jayce Tingler said. "We didn’t execute in the ninth."

Castillo pushed across the first Reds run in the second on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice, and Jonathan India doubled home another. Aristedes Aquino had a run-scoring double in the Reds fifth.

The Reds snapped a six-game Padres winning streak against them this season.

"With all the losses, I still feel like we played them tough," Cincinnati manager David Bell said. "To get a win there at the end, I thought that was deserving just from the standpoint that I thought we played them tough the whole time."

SEEING STARS

A 52-minute rain delay in the fifth inning gave Bell the chance to announce to the Reds that right fielder Nick Castellanos and left fielder Jesse Winker were voted starters for the All-Star Game on July 13 at Coors Field in Denver. It will be the first All-Star appearance for both, as well as for Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr., who was voted the starting shortstop for the NL squad.

Tingler said Tatis also got the exciting news during the rain delay.

The last time two Reds outfielders started in an All-Star Game was 1956 when Gus Bell — grandfather of the Reds' manager — and Frank Robinson got the call for the NL.

Winker wept while talking to reporters about his selection.

"You know what, man? I never thought this could happen for me," he said. "I'm very thankful."

NO GENO

Reds regular third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who’s hitting just .173, got a second night off after striking out four times against four different Padres pitchers in a 5-4 loss Tuesday night. Lopez, who made his major league debut Monday, again started in Suarez's place. He had four hits but committed the costly eighth-inning error.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Padres: Right-handed reliever Dan Altavilla announced on his personal Twitter account that he had Tommy John surgery. He made two appearances this season before going on the injured list.

Reds: RHP Michael Lorenzen was sent to the Arizona complex for a rehab assignment. Out all season with a shoulder strain, he could be back some time after the All Star break.

Padres: Right-hander Chris Paddack (4-5) is scheduled to be on the mound Friday for the beginning of a three-game series at Philadelphia. Right-hander Zack Wheeler (6-4) is set to start for the Phillies.

The Cincinnati Reds are aligned as well as any team to really make a run in the coronavirus pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

The Reds would only need 60 games to fulfill the promise of getting back to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Cincinnati has built a lineup and rotation to do just that.

Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez will anchor the lineup. Suarez came on extremely strong last season with 49 home runs and is still a relative unknown in baseball. Votto has been around for what seems like forever and another solid season from him would be absolutely clutch for Cincinnati.

Trevor Bauer has talked the talk all offseason long, so it will be put up or shut up time for him at the end of July. There will be some added pressure on him since he had part of the spotlight on him during the union’s negotiations with the owners over how to get the season underway.

Cincinnati will definitely have to step up in a crowded NL Central to make it to the playoffs.
