Ken Jennings on the 'Jeopardy!' prep trick he swears by and the category that made even him sweat

Ken Jennings says that "Jeopardy!" fans who want to be contestants shouldn’t overthink their preparation.

"I would say watching the show is the best way to prep for the show," the host explained to ӣ��Ƶ Digital on the red carpet for the TCM Classic Film Festival. "If you watch ‘Jeopardy!’ like the rhythm of the host's voice will kind of get into your pulse. You'll know the kind of stuff that comes up, the kind of material. That's how you become a good ‘Jeopardy!’ player."

And if someone is trying to cram for the show, he suggests learning the U.S. presidents and their first ladies in order and world capitals.

"And I think those are the two things that is like the most bang for your buck if you're cramming for ‘Jeopardy!’" Jennings said, admitting that he did a "lot of studying" before his record-breaking run on the show in 2004 during which he won 74 straight games.

And as a former contestant, Jennings admits he has "so much empathy" for players.

"Everybody there has passed a very hard test to be on the show. So really it comes down to who can perform under pressure because these people are not used to doing this with lights and camera and everything," he revealed, adding that some players "step up. It's like they'll suddenly become their best ‘Jeopardy!’ selves. And some are a little more deer in the headlights. I absolutely remember that. It's very overwhelming."

He added that he’s "always thinking about their well-being because I remember what that's like. It's intense."

And because of that compassion, Jennings tries to do things like help contestants make sure their interview stories will be interesting.

And he wishes he could help them when they make mistakes during the game.

"I saw somebody mess up her wager in Final Jeopardy! once, but once you lock in that wager, and she was just, ‘Oh no, I messed up the math,’" he said. "But I wish I could jump in and do people's math for them, but I'm not allowed, constitutionally."

Despite his historic run, even Jennings had categories that made him sweat a little.

"There was always a lot of hockey on ‘Jeopardy!’ When I was on, and maybe because of Alex being Canadian," he revealed, "and it turned out I did not know as much about ice hockey as a genuine Canadian like Alex."

Jennings, who has helmed the game show for five years now, said he feels like "doing an Alex Trebek impression is basically the best way to host ‘Jeopardy!’ Like, it's not a slavish thing. Like, he really perfected it, so if you're getting as close to Alex as you can, you're going as close perfection as you can."

He admitted that he doesn’t have the late Trebek’s "skill set," which is why he emulates him, but he said he differentiates himself by bringing his personality to the show.

"You know, I genuinely enjoy the interview, I think, you know, and he was very much like, ‘OK, good for you. Let's get back to the game,’" Jennings said.

Jennings said he also learned from Trebek, who died in 2020, that the "host of ‘Jeopardy!’ is not the star. You shouldn't be paying attention to the host to ‘Jeopardy!’ Like, if everything's going well, the game and the contestants are the star and that's absolutely how it should be."

For contestants, he said, it simply comes down to "who can perform under pressure."

And he especially looks forward to "Jeopardy!" tournaments "where we see our very best players playing each other and the viewers will know who they are, and they'll be like, ‘Oh, that's Amy Schneider. I love her.’ Or, you know, ‘That's Mattea Roach’ or Matt Amodio."

The 45-year-old said he loves to see the "Jeopardy!" veterans treated "like star athletes, like as a former nerd, trivia nerd myself, current trivia nerd, like that warms my heart, you know, to see people that excited about our little trivia game."

Jennings thinks it also might surprise some viewers to know a week of games is actually shot in one day.

"I think a lot of viewers don't realize we do a full week at a time," Jennings explained. "Like, we do five ‘Jeopardy!’s in one day. So, when a player wins, they have to rush off stage, put on a new outfit. I put on a new suit. We come back out 10 minutes later, and then I tell the great lie, which is like yesterday on ‘Jeopardy!’ but it was not yesterday! It was 10 minutes ago. We're just fooling you."

He explained that that means, "when players win for weeks at a time, like Jamie Ding has been doing in recent weeks, it's an endurance contest. That's a real marathon for them. They've got to play and then go back and play again."

"I guess I remember being a kid and running home from school every day to watch Alex host ‘Jeopardy!’ and just thinking, you know, in real life, this makes me a little bit weird that I like knowing all this stuff," he explained. "Like, I'm very aware that this distinguishes me from other people. But for Alex, that was like a safe space. You know? ‘Jeopardy’ was a safe place for that."

He added, "There's certain kind of person where like, they need that safe space, you know, because curiosity is so important."

Always humble, Jennings, admitted that he never thought in "a million years" that he would host the show.

"People would ask me, ‘Hey, like, if Alex were — you've been on Jeopardy for months --- if Alex were to retire, would you like to be a host?’ And I said, ‘That will never happen in a million years. They'll get a real broadcaster for this job. Everybody with a good TV resume is going to want this job, I'm not even going to get a tryout. Nobody is more surprised than me that I'm hosting ‘Jeopardy!’ but I just love this show so much. I feel very lucky."

Former "Jeopardy!" champion Jamie Ding told People magazine Monday that he hopes his massive winning streak can help put immigrants "in a positive light."

The 33-year-old New Jersey-based law student and housing policy administrator gained a following after winning 31 straight games of the long-running quiz show, the fifth-longest winning streak on the show behind fellow champions James Holzhauer, Matt Amodio, Amy Schneider and current show host Ken Jennings.

His run came to an end on Monday after losing to new player Greg Shahade, winning $882,605 in total prize money.

Ding added, "I haven't committed to anything definitive yet, but it's tough out there for immigrants. I've always wanted to be doing good things for others and now I'll have significantly more power to do that."

"Jeopardy!" contestant Jamie Ding is continuing his hot streak on the long-running game show while winning over fans at home.

On Tuesday's episode of "Jeopardy!," the 33-year-old New Jersey-based law student and housing policy administrator notched his 28th straight victory with a current total of $774,601 in earnings.

Ding has become one of the show's most dominant players in history as only four previous champions, including now "Jeopardy!" host Ken Jennings, Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio and James Holzhauer have had longer runs.

"It never comes off as cocky," "Jeopardy!" fan Lonny Starsky told the Wall Street Journal. "He almost seems embarrassed when he wins."

In his on-screen introduction, Ding is identified as a "bureaucrat and law student," a description he chose for himself. In one fan-favorite moment, Ding joked that he was a "faceless bureaucrat" during the contestant interview portion of the show.

Ding has become known for his understated reactions and his small wave during introductions, which fans have begun copying at home.

"Now I do it every time, too. I just smile at the TV and wave," Starksky said, who credits his grandmother Judy Robinson with starting the tradition.

Early in his "Jeopardy!" run, Ding told Jennings that orange is his favorite color. Since then, he has worn a shade of orange on his top during every episode, another quirk that viewers say they have found endearing. The color is also a nod to Ding's alma mater, Princeton University.

"Now she texts me every day when he’s on, ‘Oh my God, Jamie’s doing so good!’" Starsky said. "She didn’t even start watching the show til like last week."

Ding’s path to "Jeopardy!" began as a child when he started competing in events including the 2004 National Geographic Bee, which was hosted by Alex Trebek that year. Ding previously revealed that he didn't recognize the "Jeopardy!" icon as Trebek was not sporting his signature mustache.

The reigning champion first auditioned for "Jeopardy!: Teen Tournament" as a senior in high school. He continued taking "Jeopardy!'s" online "Anytime Test" every year without success before finally getting his shot.

"The luck of the timing worked out pretty well for me," Ding told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Twenty-three-year-old me would have done much worse."

Along with becoming a top five "Jeopardy!" champion, Ding's $774,601 total puts him in 8th place on the highest-winnings list as of April 21.

"I don’t know if it’s entirely sunk in," Ding told The Inquirer. "I really love history, and it’s cool to be making some history myself."

The clue said, "The Detroit News has reported on the quagga species of this type of bivalve, which has devastated the Great Lakes ecosystem."

Walter walked away with $1 million in winnings, which she donated to the Entertainment Community Fund, a nonprofit that supports professionals working in the entertainment industry.

At the beginning of Monday's episode, Walter revealed that she plans for her "Celebrity Jeopardy!" trophy to hold her ashes after her death.

"Jeopardy!" host Ken Jennings appeared to take a swipe at President Donald Trump and his administration, saying he'd support a candidate who vows to prosecute the current "regime."

Jennings took to the liberal social media platform Bluesky Wednesday during a news cycle dominated by the ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis.

"The ‘prosecute the former regime at every level’ candidate has my vote in 2028," Jennings wrote.

On Tuesday, he appeared to knock Trump's policy on Venezuela, writing on Bluesky, "America is always like ‘ok but the NEXT regime change will work,’ like when I ‘cut out carbs’ briefly every January."

"Barron Trump saw a very long necktie on a heap of expired deli meat in a dumpster. He thought it was his dad & his little heart is breaking," Jennings wrote in a since-deleted post on Twitter (now called X).

Jennings initially defended the post amid backlash, writing, "The joke doesn't mock Barron. It mocks using him for political cover."

In 2018, Jennings poked fun at what he called an "awful MAGA grandma" in response to a social media post from a woman who remembered her late disabled son who was a fan of the iconic '80s TV character "Alf."

In January 2020, Jennings offered his support to senators Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., during the Democratic primary, posting, "Remember, defending champion Ken Jennings wants you to vote for Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren."

When he was under consideration to replace longtime "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek after his Trebek's death, Jennings issued a broad apology for his past "insensitive" tweets.

"I just wanted to own up to the fact that over the years on Twitter, I've definitely tweeted some unartful and insensitive things. Sometimes they worked as jokes in my head, and I was dismayed to see how they read on screen," Jennings wrote in December 2020.

"In the past, I'd usually leave bad tweets up just so they could be dunked on. At least that way they could lead to smart replies and even advocacy. Deleting them felt like whitewashing a mistake. But I think that practice may have given the impression I stand by every failed joke I've ever posted here. Not at all!" he continued.

"Sometimes I said dumb things in a dumb way and I want to apologize to people who were (rightfully!) offended. It wasn't my intention to hurt anyone, but that doesn't matter: I screwed up, and I'm truly sorry."

Jennings' latest post is likely in reference to the Department of Homeland Security's response to the fatal shooting in Minneapolis. DHS accused a woman who was shot behind the wheel of a vehicle of "domestic terrorism" by targeting an ICE agent in front of her.

Critics are accusing the agent of using excessive force.

‘Jeopardy!’ fans slam contestants for failed answer on late Hollywood actor

The "Jeopardy!" stage turned into a pop culture battleground this week after contestants failed to identify one of Hollywood’s most legendary actors.

In a recent episode of the beloved game show, viewers were left stunned when all three contestants couldn’t come up with the name of James Earl Jones, whose voice was linked to some of the most memorable moments in film history.

During Monday night’s show, "Jeopardy!" host Ken Jennings presented the category "Sesame Street."

One of the clues read, "Throughout the years, lots of people have stopped by ‘Sesame Street’ like Alex Trebek and Ken Jennings," the Oscar the Grouch character began to say from his trash can.

"Why can’t they leave a grouch alone? But, the very first was this guy, who recited the alphabet for us."

As Jennings read the clue, a black-and-white photo of Jones popped up on the screen.

The buzzer went off as the "Jeopardy!" contestants drew a blank.

"That’s James Earl Jones," Jennings revealed, referring to the voice icon, who died on Sept. 9, 2024, at the age of 93.

On the official "Jeopardy!" social media account, fans didn’t hold back — quickly calling out the contestants for failing to recognize one of the most iconic voices in Hollywood history.

One fan fired off, "Literally how did not a single one of them not know THEE James Earl Jones!?"

"Nobody knew James Earl Jones, straight to jail," one viewer joked, while another admitted, "The way I screamed JAMES EARL JONES to my phone multiple times."

"So excuse me, you know Rocco The Rock but you don't know James Earl Jones? I weep," another comment read.

Jones was best known for his voice role as Darth Vader in the "Star Wars" franchise, in addition to "Coming to America," "Field of Dreams" and "The Hunt for Red October."

The award-winning actor passed away at his home in Dutchess County, New York, surrounded by family, his representative shared in a statement to ӣ��Ƶ Digital at the time.

Jones is one of the few entertainers to have achieved EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony awards) status.

Over his illustrious career, he claimed two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Grammy and three Tony Awards — solidifying his legacy in television, music and theater.

While Jones did not win a competitive Oscar, he was presented with the Honorary Academy Award by Sir Ben Kingsley.

Jones launched his career in theater in the early ‘50s. He earned acclaim as one of the premier Shakespearean actors of his time, commanding the stage with unforgettable performances as "Othello," "King Lear," Oberon in "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" and Claudius in "Hamlet."

His most prolific role came in the form of voicing Darth Vader in George Lucas' 1977 space epic "Star Wars." He reprised his role for the sequels "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980 and again in "Return of the Jedi" in 1983.

Jones' film credits additionally included, "Conan the Barbarian," "The Sandlot," "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger."

He was a Kennedy Center honoree in 2002 and received lifetime achievement awards from the Screen Actors Guild in 2009 and the National Board of Review in 1995.

'Jeopardy!' under fire after James Bond clue leaves viewers frustrated

"Jeopardy!" is taking some heat for a confusing James Bond clue.

Earlier this week, a Final Jeopardy prompt about the beloved film franchise left fans scratching their heads, as they argued that the clue was "convoluted."

During an episode that aired on July 7, host Ken Jennings announced that "Movie Music" was the category for the Final Jeopardy clue.

"The last 2 best song Oscar winners whose titles were the same name as the movie they were in had this man in the leading role," the clue read.

Contestant Ashley had begun writing down actor Timothee Chalamet as her answer, which Jennings said was incorrect.

The second contestant, Vince, wrote down, "Who is Daniel Craig," which was the correct answer.

The films referenced in the clue were 2012's "Skyfall" and 2021's "No Time to Die." Adele sung the title song for the earlier film, while Billie Eilish performed the other.

The episode's returning champion, Scott, also answered correctly, earning his third win.

While Scott basked in his victory, fans were quick to slam the game show for its "confusing" Final Jeopardy round.

As passionate fans called out the Final Jeopardy prompt, game show host Jennings had previously said that he had "100% empathy" for the contestants’ show fails.

"Jeopardy!" host Ken Jennings knows it’s not easy to compete on the show, having once been a contestant himself.

On the opening night red carpet for the TCM Classic Film Festival, Jennings praised his predecessor, the late Alex Trebek, but noted "one difference" they have.

"Alex was a perfect host, but if there’s one difference between us is I remember what it was like to be a contestant. My heart just goes out to these people," Jennings told ӣ��Ƶ Digital.

The Seattle-born host began his "Jeopardy!" career 20 years ago, winning over $2.5 million over the course of 74 consecutive games.

"Boq is one of these fictional people, ‘Not as big as the grown folk… but neither were they very small," the clue read. All three guessed other fictional little people, but the correct response was "What is a Munchkin?"

"In the 1939 movie of ‘The Wizard of Oz,' the Munchkins are very small, but in the book, the Munchkins are said to be about Dorothy's height," Jennings told them.

Jennings took over hosting duties in 2020 after the death of Trebek from pancreatic cancer.

In a Rolling Stone interview in January, the 50-year-old admitted he was less worried about hosting, but more concerned about the grief and mourning the show’s staff was experiencing after the loss of Trebek.

"Everybody there was very emotional, and I had to be the one talking through it, even though I probably knew him least of all 100 people on set, crew and the staff. It was very scary. You’re aware that the audience does not want you there. They’re like me, they want the other guy, and I was missing him too. I’m like, ‘I don’t want to be here. I would give anything to not be here right now,’" Jennings told the outlet.

At the TCM Classic Film Festival, Jennings did some additional hosting duties, introducing two films in their line-up, and found another connection with Trebek.

A "Jeopardy!" contestant had fans seeing double as they pointed out his strong resemblance to a beloved character from the hit sitcom "The Big Bang Theory."

On April 18, undergraduate student Liam Starnes from Barrington, Illinois, made his debut on the long-running game show when he faced off against fellow contestants Rachel Gray and one-day champion Steven Hoying.

During the episode, viewers flocked to social media where they called Starnes a look-alike of genius physicist Sheldon Cooper, the character played by Jim Parsons throughout "The Big Bang Theory's" 12-year run.

"Seriously, that's Sheldon!!!!!!!" a fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

"Liam looks like a real life Sheldon Cooper," another social media user commented.

After claiming the title of one-day champion from Hoying, Starnes returned for Monday night's episode of "Jeopardy!" and viewers once again noted his likeness to Sheldon.

Wallace's answer was revealed to be "What are lili?" The contestant, who wagered $10,000 of his $10,600 in winnings, noted that his response was "almost Lilluputian." Jennings agreed, adding that Wallace had likely run out of time to write the characters' full name.

Wargin's first guess was "What are Lilliputians?" before he crossed the answer out and wrote, "dwarves."

Jennings then informed the contestants that "What is a Munchkin?" was the correct answer.

Many fans watching at home had easily guessed the right answer as the character of Boq played a prominent role in the 2024 mega-hit movie musical "Wicked," which was an adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name.

Boq was portrayed by Ethan Slater in "Wicked," which starred Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

After the episode ended, fans flocked to social media to share their dumbfounded reactions.

"Jeopardy!" showrunner Michael Davies told Rolling Stone that the original plan after Trebek's passing was to rotate among several hosts to helm the show, but Jennings stood out from the potential candidates.

"I saw the look that the contestants would have when he’d walk out on the stage. Or his facility with the material," Davies said. "I remember at one point, somebody buzzed in and gave the wrong response, and they said, ‘Who is Gainsborough?’ And he said, ‘Oh, no, I’m sorry, it’s Gainsborough’s great rival,’ and named some other obscure artist. It was just a moment, [but] who on earth other than Ken Jennings could have that moment?"

In 2021, Jennings and Mayim Bialik were named as the new permanent hosts of the show. In December 2023, Bialik announced that she'd been let go from the job.

Jennings also shared that he had discussed the idea of taking over the game show with Trebek, saying the first time was when he spoke with him about recording a portion of his audiobook, which was released in 2020.

"That was the first time I ever had a conversation with him that was [about] torch passing, and even that was kind of very unspoken," Jennings said.

Jennings' career with "Jeopardy!" began 20 years ago as a contestant. Over the course of 74 consecutive games, Jennings won more than $2.5 million.

"Jeopardy!" fans were left angry and confused Wednesday after the game show accepted a technically wrong answer for a final clue.

The final Jeopardy clue read: "It’s the geographic word in the title of a Robert Burns poem about "the mountains … covered with snow … the straths & green valleys below."

Contestant Evan Dorey wrote "Highland," and host Ken Jennings accepted the answer. "‘My Heart’s In The Highlands‘ is the name of the poem," Jennings explained.

However, Dorey's answer lacking the "s" on the end confused fans.

"I'm pretty sure the longest 10 seconds of my life were me trying to figure out whether I should put an ‘s’ at the end of Final," he explained. "I didn't know the poem so I pretty much had the same debate that raged in this thread against myself – ‘Highlands’ was the place but the phrase ‘Highland Lass’ stuck in my head – did Burns have a poem called ‘To A Highland Lass’? (turns out that phrase actually comes from a Wordsworth poem, so swing and a miss) Which to go with? Ryan, a health program director from Binghamton, New York, admitted the "sexist" clue that caused quite the buzz on "Jeopardy!" made her feel "uncomfortable."

During the episode that aired on Oct. 28, host Ken Jennings read a clue from the category "Complete the Rhyming Phrase."

"Everybody there was very welcoming. It’s such a part of American culture that I definitely wanted to go on when I got the call for it."

Mayim Bialik made a subtle return to "Jeopardy!" one year after she was let go from the beloved game show.

Earlier this week, the former host was referenced in a clue which grabbed viewer’s attention.

"Jeopardy!" contestant Colleen Kelly chose a $600 clue in the game show category, "TV Coupling." The prompt read, "Sheldon & Amy, pure genius."

Kelly correctly answered, "What is ‘The Big Bang Theory?'"

The 48-year-old actress portrayed neuroscientist Amy Fowler, who was the love interest of Jim Parsons’ Sheldon Cooper on the popular television series from 2010 until 2019.

"Jeopardy!" fans were quick to comment on the Bialik reference on social media.

"Always gets me when a Big Bang Theory clue comes up in the post-Mayim era," one viewer wrote on Reddit.

Another comment read, "In a few years, they should do a category when the answers are just all Jeopardy hosts, from Art Fleming, to Mayim Bialik, even George Stephanopoulos."

Bialik’s reference comes one year after she was fired from the popular game show.

"Jeopardy!" fans were stunned when none of the contestants were able to guess the Final Jeopardy clue.

During Monday night's episode, Mark Fitzpatrick, Amanda Prusila and Daniel Gately all guessed incorrectly when trying to solve the Final Jeopardy clue under the category brand names.

At this point in the competition, Fitzpatrick held a substantial lead with $23,000, with Gately in second place with $4,200 and Prusila in third place with $600.

"In 1886 this brand's bookkeeper came up with its name & flowing script logo, saying, "The two Cs would look well in advertising,"' host Ken Jennings read aloud for the clue.

Typically, Jennings, and Alex Trebek before him, always referred to a contestant by their first name alone. A fan questioned on the "Jeopardy!" Reddit page if it was "wrong to frown upon contestants being referred to by their honorifics."

"As a contestant, you are asked how you would like to be named on the show," one person answered. "I would imagine that quite a few people on the show are PhDs or doctors, so it would be confusing if you had all honourifics used, IMO."

Another remarked, "I'm a PhD, but would never want to be referred to Dr. because my job is not my identity. Being a Catholic priest is pretty much one's identity. It's not just some job/educational degree."

One viewer suggested the consistent use of the "Father Steve" moniker was because of Jennings specifically, theorizing, "It felt a little like Ken was obsessed. It just seemed like he made a lot of little comments about it for the whole episode."

Mayim Bialik is addressing her health issues, as the former "Jeopardy!" host revealed she plans to receive hyperbaric treatment for the next six months.

The 48-year-old actress took to her social media to candidly share her health update while she posed in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

"What on earth!?" Bialik captioned the Instagram post. "This is me in the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber which now lives at my house! Yup. I’m using it for the next six months as it has been recommended by many people I trust - including several of my doctors- to address inflammation and autoimmune issues…"

Although the "Big Bang Theory" star admitted her health issues make her feel uneasy, she shared several photos of her grinning ear to ear inside the hyperbaric chamber.

"I know it might seem crazy and like some Hollywood trend, but I’m choosing to cultivate (fancy way to say it!) an open mind about the numerous health benefits this chamber can provide," she continued.

"I’ll report back over the course of the next six months while this (surprisingly roomy and actually not claustrophobia-inducing!) chamber is my roomie."

The neuroscientist has previously raised awareness about mental and physical health on her social media platforms, as well as on her "Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown" podcast.

Last August, Bialik took charge of her health as she revealed to her fans that she had been hospitalized.

While she was in the hospital for a routine colonoscopy, she took the opportunity to urge others to keep up with these kinds of preventative tests and not be embarrassed by them.

"It’s not terribly fun getting older," Bialik admitted in her caption. "Especially when you have to get a routine colonoscopy and really wish you didn’t have to."

In a video she shared, she was makeup-free while wearing a hospital gown. She said, "Everything's fine, I'm fine, everything's fine, but I'm having a routine procedure today that is recommended for people of a certain age."

She explained that she wanted to make a video at the time about the topic "because I think it's these kinds of things that if we don't talk about them, it's more likely that people don't pay the attention they need to certain aspects of our physical well-being, which is connected to our mental well-being."

According to the CDC, it's recommended that adults begin getting routine colonoscopies at age 45 or earlier if a person has inflammatory bowel disease or a family history of colon cancer or polyps.
