Tim McGraw nearly walked away from his career after serious health struggles

HIGHLAND, California - Tim McGraw opened up about nearly quitting his career after dealing with a series of health setbacks.

The country star, 58, got candid about his struggles during his Saturday tour stop in Highland, California, at the Yaamava' Theater.

"I've had four back surgeries and double knee replacements, just in the last couple of years," McGraw, who is married to fellow artist Faith Hill, said on stage.

The "Blind Side" actor said right before his most recent back surgery this past spring, "Things were getting really bad," with the star "getting depressed over it," which made him consider walking away from his career.

"The doctor who did my double knee replacement is here tonight," McGraw said.

The "Humble and Kind" singer asked his doctor to stand up for applause. "Dr. Chen, where you at? There he is!"

"And my wife has been going through quite a bit of surgeries – she's had five neck surgeries, and she's had a couple of hand surgeries. Her hand surgeon, Dr. Rose, is here tonight," also asking him to stand up for applause.

"So, part one of that story. The reason I wanted to tell that part is because the doctors are here. The second part of that story, is, after going through all of that for a couple of years and getting depressed over it and all of those things — stuff not going right," he explained.

"And this spring, before I had my final back surgery, things were getting really bad, so I was seriously contemplating and figuring out how to walk away. I didn't want to, but I didn't think it was going to get better," the artist shared on stage.

"But it's gotten better. So, during that process, I had this idea for this song that sort of dealt with facing age and facing all that stuff that comes along with it," before singing the song he mentioned, called "King Rodeo."

Lyrics of the song include: "Hey, King Rodeo, You're lookin' lonely, Like you've lost you're one and only, Adoring crowds are not around you, Whispers and shadows, they surround you."

McGraw is set to hit the stage on Nov. 1 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and perform three nights in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace in December.

In January 2025, McGraw stepped down from a Netflix rodeo series he was set to star and produce in, according to Deadline.

The "1883" actor reportedly needed back surgery and needed to recover, the outlet's source reported at the time.

He was supposed to play a bull rider, a physically demanding role.

McGraw is no stranger to overcoming obstacles.

The "Live Like You Were Dying" singer has been sober since 2008, after battling alcohol addiction.

He credited Hill, whom he has been married to since 1996, for helping him overcome his addiction.

In 2021, McGraw told Esquire that he realized he needed help when he drank alcohol first thing in the morning.

"I remember a moment when I was getting out of bed and going to the liquor cabinet and taking a big shot at 8:00 in the morning and thinking, 'I have to wake up the kids.'"

McGraw and Hill, who most recently celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary, share three daughters: Gracie, Maggie and Audrey.

"I went straight to my wife and said, 'This is where I'm at.' I was scared. She just grabbed me and hugged me and changed my life," he recalled.

The country sensation said she told him: "'You're not scared of anything,'" to which he said, "'Ehhh, one thing – I'm looking right at it now,'" referring to his wife.

McGraw and Hill first met when she opened for his 1996 Spontaneous Combustion Tour.

The couple married in October 1996 and have collaborated on songs and tours together.

They most recently starred together in the "Yellowstone" prequel series, "1883," as James and Margaret Dutton — the great-grandparents of the Dutton family.

The series aired from 2021 to 2022.

Tim McGraw is officially sticking with his new look.

The country music icon shared the inspiration behind his decision to shave his head, a hairstyle he showed off during a stroll in Nashville this July in photos obtained by People. He also explained that it was the opinion of a certain someone that made him want to commit to the change.

"It was so hot this summer, and I just decided to do it," he said to E! News at the iHeartRadio Festival on Sept. 20.

McGraw, 58, then admitted that he is ready to keep the buzz cut going – because his wife, Faith Hill, loves it.

"Once I did it, I really liked it and then my wife liked it even better," he said.

He added, "I’m like, when my wife likes something, I’m going to keep it."

McGraw and Hill first met in 1994, but didn't start dating until 1996. They got married later that year. The couple share three daughters: Gracie, Maggie and Audrey.

In May, the country star opened up about his nearly 30-year marriage to Hill and explained how she managed to help the country star turn his life around.

"I’ve been lucky. I’ve been very fortunate. First off, meeting my wife saved my life. I was a wild man," he said on the "Tracy Lawrence’s Road House" podcast. "I was having fun."

"[Fatherhood] changed my perspective. It changed the way I thought about what my future would be. It certainly took me out of myself," said McGraw, who's been sober since 2008 and has candidly spoken in the past about how Hill supported him in quitting alcohol.

The country superstar revealed in a 2023 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that without his wife, his life and career might’ve already been over.

"I guarantee you, had I not gotten married to Faith at 29 years old, A, I probably would've ran my career into the ground, and B, I would've died already with my career into the ground, one or the other, and it wouldn't have ever been where it's at now," McGraw said.

Beyond studying the Civil War and exhibiting oral proficiency in Italian, one LSU student spent this year scribbling his name on more than just the back of desks.

Timothy Wayne, an up-and-coming country music artist, followed in the footsteps of his uncle, country music legend Tim McGraw, and signed his first major record deal with UMG and Capitol Records Nashville.

"I always wanted to do it," Wayne told ӣ��Ƶ Digital. "I loved being on stage. I never got stage fright, loved being on stage. I just never thought I could, and then once I actually had people tell me that I could, and they believed in me, I had to start believing in myself."

"It’s kind of like time slowed down while I was signing," he added.

Wayne, 21, has released two original songs, "God Made a Country Boy" and "Guy With a Guitar" and was invited to perform on the Louisiana state float at the Rose Bowl Parade Jan. 1, 2025, by the lieutenant governor of Louisiana.

"I thought somebody was playing a joke on me," Wayne said of being asked to perform. "I didn’t know much about the Rose Bowl beforehand, but I knew that Lainey Wilson had done it previously."

Despite having a lifelong passion for music with inspiration from Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and, thanks to his Italian grandmother’s influence, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, Wayne only started to truly focus on music a few years ago.

"For me, to be invited when I'd just really started making waves, it was awesome," he said. "For them to ask me to represent my mom, and my uncle, and my aunt's home state, and the state that I love, and I go to school in was surreal."

Programmed to create his own mastery of music, Wayne is produced by McGraw and his and Faith Hill’s producer, Byron Gallimore. But he writes his own music, coordinates with bandmates himself, tells his own story through vocals and collaborates with other songwriters in Nashville.

"He's the biggest supporter of this whole idea," Wayne told ӣ��Ƶ Digital of McGraw. "When I first really started getting into music later in high school, he told me, he said, ‘I'll produce you, but that's it. You have to forge your own path.’"

"I love being his nephew," Wayne said. "I always make a joke that he works for me. I was like, ‘Tim McGraw is my employee.’"

As for his management, Wayne credits his mom and McGraw’s sister, Sandy Howard, for taking on the brunt of the workload.

"My mom takes a lot of the stress off my back," he said. "She makes everything go smoothly up to the show and after the show."

He added that she, along with his father, imparted '80s hairband rock ‘n’ roll like Kiss and Poison into his preferred genre of music and helped him identify the sound he loves.

"I’m a huge rock ‘n’ roll fan," Wayne said. "Country music is first and foremost storytelling, but I like to add that extra oomph when it's not a love story."

Wayne put his talents on display at McGraw’s "Standing Room Only" tour earlier this year when he jumped on the bus ride to six shows.

"Touring was not long enough," he said.

Wayne isn’t done joining country music stars on stage. He was invited to perform with Lee Brice in 2025.

"When I got the call that I was going to be invited to come and do his ‘You, Me and My Guitar’ show in Mississippi in February, I was over the moon."

Tim McGraw is sharing his family's unique holiday traditions.

During an interview on Audacy's "Katie & Company" in their "Superstar Power Hour," the "Humble and Kind" singer spoke about a fun family tradition his daughters started, which he looks forward to every year.

"They’ve created this theme night thing that we do. It’s based on TV shows or movies or books sometimes, and they’ll pick a theme, and then we’ll have a dinner. The food has to fit the theme as well," McGraw explained.

"We’ll put all these characters in a hat, and everybody has to draw a character, and then you have to dress up as that character. But you can only use things that you can find around the house."

The singer elaborated, saying his daughters invite all their friends to join them for dinner, noting it's fun to watch them run around his house trying to find accessories to match the theme. They've gone through quite a few popular themes.

"We did ‘Game of Thrones.' One night, we did ‘The Great.' We did Harry Potter," McGraw said.

Since the family has already tackled many movies and TV shows, McGraw says he is "curious to see what they come up with this year."

The Grammy Award-winning musician shares three daughters with his wife, Faith Hill — Gracie, Maggie Elizabeth and Audrey Caroline.

Their youngest daughter, Audrey, plays a special role in one of their other Christmas traditions.

"Dec. 6 is her birthday, so we always decorate our tree on her birthday," McGraw explained. "So, that's one of our traditions."

He has also found new ways to incorporate some traditions from his childhood into his life as a father.

"I always cook. My mom's Italian, so I grew up on Christmas Eve having pasta for Christmas Eve dinner. I make spagetti and meatballs every New Year's Eve, and we usually have it around noon or 1, so all the family we have that lives in our area all show up," he said on the podcast.

"We usually have 20 or 30 people … and then we play games after and karaoke. We always have karaoke set up. And then I have to listen to my daughters doing two hours of ‘Hamilton.’"

During the interview, he called the holidays a "busy" time because all his daughters are back home. Earlier this year, McGraw shared on Audacy's "Rob + Holly Show" how hard it was for him to help move his daughter Gracie cross country.

"I drove my daughter to LA when she moved out there and drove cross country with her. I took all the seats out of my Cadillac Escalade and loaded it up with all of her stuff," he explained. "When I dropped her off, I mean, I just lost it. … And then I had to drive home all by myself. … I was crying the whole time."

While it was hard for McGraw to let his daughter go, he also told the outlet it led to a song based on the experience for his 17th studio album, "Standing Room Only." It came about when he called his friend, guitarist Bobby Minner, and had "a heart-to-heart about dropping [Gracie] off," which inspired Minner to write the song for him.

Hill and McGraw have kept both their marriage and the lives of their children private for the most part. However, as their daughters get older, they continue to step into the spotlight every so often.

Gracie had a recurring role on Tyler Perry's series, "If Loving You Is Wrong" from 2018 to 2020 and has received praise for posting videos of herself singing on social media, including one of her covering "I'm Not That Girl" from the hit Broadway musical, "Wicked." She was also featured on her dad's 2015 hit "Here Tonight."

"They're the life of the party every time they're around," McGraw told Entertainment Tonight in August about his daughters. "They just inspire us in so many ways. I'd love to do a song with all five of us at some point. I talk about it all the time, and they're like, 'I ain't singing with you, dad.'"

Country stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have consistently maintained a united front as husband and wife, and as musical collaborators. Married for nearly three decades, the musicians have headlined three tours together.

Despite personal and professional triumphs, McGraw said some of their "biggest disagreements" involve their profession.

"I mean we're two different artists. We don't always agree, musically. In fact, some of our biggest disagreements come when we're putting a tour together," McGraw admitted during Time Magazine's "Person of the Week" podcast.

"Faith's very type-A," he explained. "I'm a mess. I'll throw clothes everywhere. I mean she's always, constantly on me about picking my clothes up. I mean, I spent 30 years living in a hotel… In and out. So I'm just constantly throwing stuff everywhere and she's like, ‘You got to clean up after yourself.’"

McGraw admits that his personality shifts when performing is involved. "When I'm putting a show together, I'm very type-A. I want everything right, in the right place at the right time… And Faith wants to free-wheel it a lot. Just because she's so talented. And she [doesn't] want to be constrained. So some of the times, we knock heads a little bit, but we figure it out," he clarified. "We always have a great time touring together."

Despite their differences, McGraw maintains that he and Hill have each other's backs. "She's my biggest fan, I'm her biggest fan. I play music for her all the time… Like I said, we don't always agree. There's songs that I've loved and put on an album that she goes, ‘Ah, I don’t think I would put that on an album.' And vice versa. There's songs that I've loved that she' didn't record that I thought, ‘Man you should’ve recorded that.'"

"But she's had enough success that I've been proven wrong so many times that I learned to trust her completely on what she wants to do. And she's learned to trust me on what I want to do."

When the couple first got together, McGraw says they were acutely aware of the "tough" circumstances in front of them.

"We knew that it wasn't gonna be easy for two people who do the same thing to stay together and stay together for a long time and raise a family and we had a lot of long talks before we got married. And we knew what kind of family we wanted. We also knew, and made a promise to each other, that we weren't gonna run out the door at the first sight of trouble. That we were gonna tough things out."

The "Standing Room Only" singer also joked that the secret to a successful marriage was "saying yes ma'am a lot." He also gave practical advice to couples that have overlapping professions.

"Understand that you're different," he recommended. "I think that's the biggest deal. Just don't think because you're an artist your spouse has to be an artist like you are. Understand their own individuality and the kind of stuff that they like to do and the kind of ways they like to do things. And what gets their artistic juices flowing may be different than what gets yours flowing. And if you don't recognize that and pay attention to that, then you can maybe run into some problems.

The country star took to his Instagram to celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary, posting a photo of the two of them on the night they met.

"This is the very first picture ever taken of us, the very first time we ever met back in spring of 1994. This was backstage of the "New Faces" show at the Country Radio Seminar......I fell for you in an instant," he wrote.

"I fall for you everyday, every time you walk into the room, every time I see you in our 3 beautiful daughter's smiles. I just keep falling and always will. Happy anniversary my love!"

McGraw has also been open about he and Hill experiencing their share of hardships in the 27 years they've been together. While he can't pin down the "key" to a successful marriage, he told Entertainment Tonight Canada, "We just made a commitment early on," when discussing marriage and children, "that we wouldn’t just walk out the door when problems arose."

McGraw recently shared that he "would've died" had he not married Hill. The "It’s Your Love" crooner, who battled addiction and a 15-year struggle with sobriety, admitted Hill was always his saving grace.

In August, the "I Like it, I Love it" singer credited his wife with keeping both his career and him alive amid his 15-year sobriety journey.

"I guarantee you, had I not gotten married to Faith at 29 years old: A, I probably would've ran my career into the ground, and B, I would've died already with my career into the ground, one or the other, and it wouldn't have ever been where it's at now," he told Apple Music host Zane Lowe via People.

"In fact, when the girls get home now, it’s like, 'Haven’t you been here a little too long?'" he teased of the couple's three daughters – Gracie, 25, Maggie, 25, and Audrey, 21 – who have since moved out.

"My uncle told me one time — my uncle Hank, old hippie who lives in Napa Valley — he played it for me one time years ago on the road," McGraw said. "He loved that song too. He said, ‘I'm going to tell you something.’ He says, ‘Never make love to a woman with this song on unless you intend to marry her.’ And so I didn't until I did. And then I did."

As for their pact? To make their marriage work, McGraw confessed he made a promise to Hill at the start of their relationship.

"We just made a commitment early on, when we first decided we were getting married and having kids, that we wouldn’t just walk out the door when problems arose," he explained to Entertainment Tonight Canada.

Although the music superstars have faced challenges in their marriage, as McGraw battled addiction and a 15-year struggle with sobriety, the "It’s Your Love" crooner admitted Hill was always his saving grace.

Here’s a look back at their love story:

McGraw and Hill first met in 1994, but didn't start dating until 1996. Sparks flew when Hill joined McGraw on his Spontaneous Combustion tour, and the two tied the knot later that year.

In 2021, McGraw recalled his proposal to Hill in a sweet social media video as the two celebrated 25 years of marriage.

"We had dated for a while," McGraw detailed in a video clip shared on X, known as Twitter at the time. "I actually asked her to marry me quite a few times and she kept saying no. She said, 'I'm not going to get involved with another country singer, it's just not going to work out.'"

In 1997, McGraw and Hill revealed they were expecting their first baby. As the couple arrived at the American Music Awards together, the "This Kiss" singer flaunted her growing baby bump. Later that year, they welcomed daughter Grace.

A year later in 1998, the country stars welcomed their second child, a baby girl named Maggie. Their third daughter Audrey was born in 2001, one year after McGraw and Hill completed their Soul2Soul tour together.

As McGraw and Hill’s successful music careers skyrocketed, they vowed to always put their family first.

"Faith and I, the lucky thing for us, when we decided to get married, we knew we wanted a family and we knew we wanted our family to come first, and we were 29 when we got married," he told Apple Music.

"We were both successful and so when we got married and decided to have a family, we had had enough success at that time that we could pick and choose when we wanted to work and how we wanted to work."

While the couple’s three daughters are all grown up now — Gracie, 26; Maggie, 25; and Audrey, 21 — McGraw shared that the family of five isn’t afraid to be "brutally honest" with each other.

"Faith and I were going to raise our girls to be strong, independent and fierce and have their own minds and have their own opinions," he told "Entertainment Tonight Canada" last week.

"And sometimes I go, ‘Dang, do we want them to be that independent and strong?’ But yeah, we’re so proud of them."

However, despite career success and a happy family, McGraw confessed that he went through a low point in his life.

He recently opened up about his 15-year struggle with sobriety and how his wife always stood by him.

"She's always been my rock. She's my rock in everything that I do. I don't think I could stand up straight without leaning on her in everything that I do," McGraw shared during an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment.

Although McGraw had unconditional support from Hill, he's admitted it was difficult to avoid temptation during his sobriety journey.

"It is not a linear path," he noted during an event ahead of his Standing Room Only tour.

"There's setbacks… there's times you move forward and do great, and there's times you set back. And that'll probably be a process throughout the rest of my life and something that I have to be diligent about… really continue to work at."

Between hours in the gym to maintain his physique, to hours at home with his wife, Faith Hill, and their three daughters (if they have a chance to drop by), McGraw has made sure to put just as much of a focus on his family as his career through the last 30 years as a country music star.

His rise to the top – just like his battle with alcoholism – was not linear. While his first album flopped, he stayed the course and did not settle for anything but the best. Faith in himself and gratitude for those who have supported him along the way have helped him remain standing on solid ground.

McGraw and Hill were in relationships with other people when they first met at a gig in 1994, but they reconnected two years later when she opened for him on his tour.

A few things that keep their 27-year marriage going strong are date nights, praying and little time to be alone.

"We both have our daily routines, and we have our own dressing rooms," Hill told People. "We each have our own space to retreat to, so we do get time to ourselves."

He has leaned on Faith for as long as he can remember. In 2008, McGraw came clean to his wife about his battle with alcoholism.

"I remember a moment when I was getting out of bed and going to the liquor cabinet and taking a big shot at 8:00 in the morning and thinking, ‘I have to wake the kids up,’" he told Esquire in 2021.

"I went straight to my wife and said, ‘This is where I’m at.’ I was scared. She just grabbed me and hugged me and changed my life."

His sobriety journey has not been easy, but he praised Hill for being a guiding light despite the struggles. "She's always been my rock. She's my rock in everything that I do," McGraw told Yahoo Entertainment. "I don't think I could stand up straight without leaning on her in everything that I do."

In addition to his wife, McGraw's kids have been a guiding force to help him change his perspective on health.

Around the same time he faced his alcoholism battle head-on, McGraw starred in the 2008 film "Four Christmases" with Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon. He weighed around 215 pounds when the movie was released.

When his daughter Gracie noted that her father looked "big on the screen," McGraw started implementing changes in his diet and exercise routine and lost 40 pounds.

"I got out of it for a while," McGraw told Men’s Health. "I was in the prime of my career, and I wasn’t capitalizing on it."

In addition to alcohol, he completely cut out "truck-stop foods" and cheeseburgers and began incorporating more movement into his day-to-day.

"I use my whole body to sing—my legs, my butt," he said. "And having more control over those things makes my voice stronger."

"Focusing on my physical health hasn’t just made my body healthier, it’s made me healthier at every level," McGraw said in a recent Instagram post in 2019. "Moving daily and exercising regularly was a pebble that set off a ripple effect, improving the way I eat, sleep, relate to others, and show up both personally and professionally. It made me a better person to be around."

His latest ballad, "Hey Whiskey," draws comparisons to his own complicated relationship with alcohol.

He sings, "All I ever did was give you my attention / Every Friday night since I turned twenty-two / I trusted you with my naive intentions / Hey whiskey, what'd I ever do to you? / I gave you every penny in my pocket / You helped me lie and made me tell the truth / Stayed out with you all night when you came calling / Hey whiskey, what'd I ever do to you?"

I’ve been working on this album since 2020, and this collection of songs are some of the most emotional, thought-provoking, and life-affirming music I’ve ever recorded."

Tim McGraw revealed the one thing that fans should never expect to see at his concerts.

The 56-year-old country singer, who announced his upcoming "Standing Room Only" tour on Friday, told Entertainment Tonight that there will most likely be no pyrotechnics at any of his concerts.

"I'm not a big pyro guy. I'm scared to death. I know myself enough that I move around all over the place and sure enough I'll be standing right over one of those things when it goes off," the "1923" star quipped.

He added, "We don't need that. I'd light my a** on fire."

However, McGraw said that concert-goers can expect a big show and he was excited for his fans to see what he had in store.

"All three of them are great singers," McGraw said of his daughters. "I'd love to do a song with all five of us at some point. I talk about it all the time and they're like, 'I ain't gonna sing with you, Dad.'"

He continued, "Maybe I'll talk them into it. Maybe they'll sort of grow out of that phase a little bit where they don't want to sing with me. They'll sing with Mom, but I'm probably not up to par with the rest of them."

Eric Nelsen had no idea what to expect when it came time to transform himself into a cowboy alongside a country music megastar.

The actor is starring in the "Yellowstone" prequel "1883," which stars Tim McGraw and his real-life wife, fellow country crooner Faith Hill. The series tells the story of James and Margaret Dutton, played by the couple, as they travel through the Great Plains in hopes of seeking a better future in Montana, known as "America’s promised land." The series, which originally became available for streaming on Paramount+, is now airing on Paramount Network.

The 31-year-old plays Ennis, a young cowboy enamored with James’ daughter Elsa Dutton [Isabel May].

"[Tim's] got three daughters – three awesome daughters – who were always on set visiting and hanging out with us," Nelsen told ӣ��Ƶ Digital.

The Western series was created by Taylor Sheridan, who recruited McGraw, 56, to play the elder Dutton in a "Yellowstone" flashback scene during Season 4, People magazine reported. According to the outlet, Sheridan soon developed the stand-alone series, which premiered in December 2021.

While McGraw acted more like a big brother at times with Nelsen, even pulling the occasional prank, he also wasn’t afraid to stay in character as an intimidating patriarch – something that came easy to him.

"He became a great friend, and I really looked up to him," said Nelsen. "But as the season goes on, and the viewers will see, our characters aren’t always on the best of terms, and he liked to throw that around on and off set."

McGraw wasn’t the only dominating figure present.

"When you find out you’re about to work with someone like Sam Elliott, you’re like, ‘Oh wow, it’s real now,’" LaMonica Garrett told ӣ��Ƶ Digital. "[But] when you meet him and [you have] all the nerves and anxiety… about working with someone of his caliber, he makes all that fall to the ground."

Garrett, 48, plays Thomas, a soldier who becomes the right-hand man to wagon master Shea [Elliott]. The baritone-voiced star, a veteran of TV and movie Westerns, quickly welcomed his castmate with open arms.

"[I was surprised at] how easy he was to work with and how warm he was," Garrett explained… "We became brothers like immediately after meeting, and it just built on that. We didn’t have any chemistry reads or anything [before filming]. From the first time we were on camera together, Taylor’s like, ‘You guys got it. I’m not going to bother you guys.’ He went back behind the camera and me and Sam just did what we did."

But bringing the show to life wasn’t exactly a smooth ride for Garrett or Nelsen. The cast was required to take on a strenuous, no-nonsense cowboy camp. Sheridan, a native Texan, is also a cattle ranch owner in his home state.

The "Yellowstone" cast has previously shared that they trained with actual cowboys to make their series appear as authentic as possible.

"We all got to do it together, which was an incredible experience," Nelsen explained. "But it was a time for us to get comfortable on our horses, to learn how to cut cattle, how to rope, how to shoot guns – all the things we’re going to have to do on the show. So by the time the cameras were rolling, the last thing we were thinking about was how to control these animals. We could really be present with our scene partners and go into this thing feeling at least somewhat [like] the cowboys that we were portraying."

"And it also happened to be the most fun time on set," he added.

"It was learning how to ride… and it was also a bonding experience for the cast to get together," Garrett chimed in. "So we have a month before we start shooting… We’re all in our little bubble on Taylor’s ranch. We would have dinners together, we would wake up together. If someone’s going into town for food, I’d get a headcount like, ‘Hey Sam, you need anything? Tim? What do you guys need? Oh, I’m coming with you, wait for me.’ It was like herd mentality with us for a month. So once the cameras started rolling, we were so comfortable with each other already that it was a seamless transition."

For Garrett, saddling up was no easy feat.

"Learning to ride a horse is humbling," he chuckled. "There [are] people that have been doing this since they were kids, and I’m a grown man. I jump on a horse… and I’m trying to figure it out. I’m not getting it, but day after day, you keep working at it, and you get better and better. For a good portion of the beginning, I had my stunt guy do a lot of the extreme stunt stuff on horses. [But] there was a time that came when I was like, ‘I got this,’ and I figured it out. That’s life. You’re not going to be great when you first get at something. The more and more you put work into it, [the more] you become good. And if you fall, you got to get back up."

Sheridan’s frontier tales have become a phenomenon, helping to pave the way for a Western comeback. However, Garrett and Nelsen said the 53-year-old has no desire to create a glitzy, Hollywood version of the Wild West. The filmmaker grew up riding and roping in rural Texas, and assumed he would spend his life heading from ranch to ranch, The New York Times reported. According to the outlet, Sheridan’s gritty empire aims to expand his audience’s understanding of cowboys and the American West.

"He was born in this lifestyle," Garrett explained. "This is his culture. He knows the Western story that he’s telling. And I think the people that tell these stories should be the people that are in it. You grew up [in] it, you know things that a writer might not know or study so much. But when you’re in it, you’re born into it, and you lived it, it’s a lot easier for you to tell that story. And authenticity and specificity are very important to him… It’s that real to him."

"Taylor builds these tough people that have to survive this world, that have to stick through it," Garrett continued. "Technology has made it easier for us. But a byproduct of that is a society that has gotten a little lazier. The stories that Taylor tells, there’s no laziness there. Everyone’s fighting. It’s survival. It’s man versus man, man versus nature and man versus himself. We could all see something in that. That’s why we gravitate toward those kinds of stories."

For Nelsen, revisiting the past has made him feel even more hopeful about his future.

"[‘1883’] has definitely taught me that nothing is impossible," he reflected. "Just because you haven’t maybe experienced something doesn’t mean you’re not capable of achieving it. We all learned unique skills [on set] that we had never known before and can still apply that to ourselves today."

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are set to co-star in the upcoming film "Asteroid City" – and are one of Hollywood's real-life famous stars whose chemistry off-screen also translates into their work. In fact, Wilson's production company is behind Hanks' latest project, "A Man Called Otto," which is set to premiere on Jan. 13.

In an interview with ӣ��Ƶ Digital, celebrity matchmaker and dating expert Alessandra Conti shared her thoughts on TV and movie couples who, like Hanks and Wilson, also enjoy either sizzling on-screen chemistry or a working relationship.

"Not every Hollywood couple can translate their off-screen chemistry into an on-screen romance, so when it does happen successfully, there is nothing better as a viewer," Conti said.

She continued, "As a professional matchmaker, I can affirm that while two people can be objectively attractive, chemistry between two people is difficult to manufacture. When two actors fall in love off-screen and experience that organic chemistry, it takes a different skill set entirely for them to work together and portray that connection on-screen."

In 1985, Hanks and Wilson played lovers in the 1985 buddy comedy "Volunteers," with the "Forrest Gump" star later telling GQ that they immediately had chemistry.

"Rita and I just looked at each other and — kaboing — that was that," Hanks told People magazine. "I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn't be denied."

Hanks and Wilson have now been married for 34 years and share sons Chet, 32, and Truman, 27.

Hanks and Wilson also served as executive producers for CBS sitcom "My Big Fat Greek Life," in which the actress also made a cameo appearance.

The two recently joined forces again as producers of the upcoming movie "A Man Called Otto," which also stars two-time Academy Award-winner Hanks.

Directed by Marc Forster, the comedy-drama is based on Fredrik Backman's 2012 novel titled "A Man Called Ove." During an interview with Gold Derby last month, Wilson told the outlet that the couple had been looking for the right project for Hanks to make his return to the comedy genre for the first time in years.

The "It's Complicated" star explained that a light bulb went off when they viewed the 2015 Swedish film adaptation of Backman's novel.

"After 20 minutes, I had that panic moment of like, ‘This is the one. This is the one!’" Wilson told the outlet.

"The next day, we made the call to come and have a meeting or figure out a way to get the rights to it, because I just thought this is the perfect world for him."

"For 365 nights, I slept with the producer to get the part," Hanks joked during a Q&A at a screening of "A Man Called Otto" in Los Angeles last month, per People magazine.

In addition to serving as a producer, Wilson also wrote and performed an original song "Till You're Home" for the movie's soundtrack. The pair's son Truman also made his acting debut in the film, playing a younger version of his father.

When I married Rita, I thought, 'This is going to require some change on my part.' I won't deny that providence was part of us finding each other, but our relationship isn't magic — the way it's shown in movies."

Hill and McGraw were recently spotted at the Polo Bar in New York City to celebrate daughter Maggie’s 24th birthday.

The country music power couple sported casual looks, and their other two daughters — Gracie, 25, and Audrey, 20 — also attended.

Hill was dressed in a long, black dress with her hair pulled up in a messy bun, and McGraw sported a polo tucked into white pants and classic brown cowboy boots. Maggie, the birthday girl, wore a flowery white dress and a pair of cowboy boots.

McGraw previously told ӣ��Ƶ acting opposite his wife only enhances his performance.

"In the middle of a scene, there are little gestures that she'll give me — like when she knows that I'm off track a little bit. She'd give me that look to set me back straight," he admitted.

"Just like when we're singing on stage, and I'm singing flat on my harmony part. I'll get that look from her, and I know I better straighten up because I'm not doing this well enough. So we definitely have that sort of communication between us," McGraw added.

McGraw and Hill tied the knot in October 1996 and will celebrate their 26th wedding anniversary this year.

Faith Hill to present at 2022 CMT Music Awards, her first appearance in 12 years

Faith Hill is officially returning to the CMT Awards.

The country music star will make an appearance at the show for the first time in over a decade. The 54-year-old last appeared 12 years ago in 2010.

The "Breathe" singer will grace the stage alongside her "1883" costar Isabel May to present the video of the year award, the final and biggest award given out during the ceremony, People magazine reported on Monday.

Carrie Underwood's collaboration with Jason Aldean, "If I Didn't Love You," is up for the video of the year honor alongside Kane Brown's "One Mississippi," Luke Combs' "Forever After All," Cody Johnson's "Til You Can't," Cole Swindell and Lainey Wilson's "Never Say Never," and Kelsea Ballerini's duet with Kenny Chesney, "Half of My Hometown."

According to the outlet, the six nominees will be narrowed down to a top three by Monday. Voting for the top video will then take place throughout the live show. The honor will then be awarded at the end of the night.

Ballerini is co-hosting the coveted country music show with Anthony Mackie. The 28-year-old will also perform her new single "Heartfirst." The Judds will also reunite for their first televised performance in 20 years.

The "Yellowstone 1886" star appeared on "Late Night with Stephen Colbert" Tuesday where she talked with the host about when she was asked to open the game with the National Anthem in 2000 when the Tennessee Titans went up against the St. Louis Rams.

"Singing the national anthem for the Super Bowl was terrifying," she explained. "However, when I sang it, the Tennessee Titans happened to make it to the Super Bowl that same year. And I had accepted the honor, I was asked, and I said, 'Oh, my gosh, yes.' And I was like what did I just do? It's terrifying."

Although she was nervous, she was excited to be present for her team’s turn in the big game. However, she explained that the pressure on any artist to get the lyrics right is so big that they’re often the first thing to exit one’s memory. While she didn’t forget the lyrics that day, she said she almost forgot them during a different game.

"It's one of those songs you know so well and you think I'll never forget the lyrics. This happened to me before. It was at a playoff game many years prior. I was singing at a Dallas playoff game, the beginning of my career, and I was asked to sing the national anthem, playoff game," she explained. "And I'm walking out to the center of the field with this very generous guard, this woman that was walking me out, and I say to her, and this is televised, 'Would you happen to know just the first word of the National Anthem?'"

Unfortunately for her, the guard drew a blank as well. So, as she was walking to the stage, she had a bright idea.

"I'm just going to sing 'Amazing Grace,' because they'll forgive me for that," she said.

Luckily, she managed to remember the lyrics by the time she got to the middle of the field and took the stage.

The duo then discussed that country artist Mickey Guyton had been tapped to sing the National Anthem at the upcoming Super Bowl game. When Colbert asked if Hill had any advice for the singer she said she had every confidence in her.

"I am such a huge fan and supporter and she is going to slay it," Hill concluded.

Colbert concluded the interview segment by looking directly to the camera and jokingly saying: "Mickey, the first word is ‘Oh.’"

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill take their relationship to the next level as James and Margaret Dutton in Taylor Sheridan's new "Yellowstone" prequel series "1883."

This isn't the first time the longtime married country stars have also played husband and wife onscreen and McGraw told ӣ��Ƶ acting opposite his wife only enhances his performance.

"In the middle of a scene, there are little gestures that she'll give me, like when she knows that I'm off track a little bit, she'd give me that look to set me back straight," he admitted.

"Just like when we're singing on stage and I'm singing flat on my harmony part. I'll get that look from her and I know I better straighten up because I'm not doing this well enough. So we definitely have that sort of communication between us," McGraw added.

"1883" follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America.

The cast includes Sam Elliott, Isabel May, and LaMonica Garrett who all went through a tough "cowboy camp" in order to prep for what life was like in the brutal west.

McGraw said riding horses was his strongest skill. "I'm a pretty good rider, but I really enjoyed roping. And that was a lot of fun roping during cowboy camp and then learning to drive the wagon was fun too because I'd never done that before," he recalled.

Hill revealed her strongest skill in cowboy camp was steering the massive wagon. "It's really hard, way harder [than I realized] and really dangerous and very dangerous," Hill told ӣ��Ƶ. "I compared it to like driving a stick shift."

May, who plays James and Margaret's daughter Elsa Dutton, described how much research she completed for the role.

"I read probably 50 books, and in particular, the ones that I gravitated towards were journals from young women that made the same trek," May said. "And it was interesting. I found one in particular, and it was from a young lady who was 17 at the time, very similar in age to the character I play. I took tidbits from that."

"What's remarkable about the situation is that we really do get to live it because the terrain and the weather and the conditions are as realistic as it could possibly be," May described. "[On set] we're doing these things with their own hands, and [we're] wearing what they would wear [in the time period]."

Oscar-nominated Elliott, who plays lawman Shea Brennan, believes the Western represents a classic form of storytelling in Hollywood with themes that are still relatable in the present day.

"I just think that there's something about that kind of a classic struggle depicted in a lot of westerns that appeals to a massive audience," he reasoned. "It speaks of where we all came from. The peaks of that journey from the east to the West, what we did along the way, both the good and the evil, most of the evil. Taylor Sheridan writes about all the history and I think that's what's going to be most appealing about this [show]."

"1883" airs Sundays at 9 pm ET on Paramount Network and is available to stream on Paramount+.

Faith Hill and Tim McGraw called on their parental instincts for "1883," a prequel to the modern TV drama "Yellowstone."

The country music stars, long married with children, play a couple heading westward with their youngsters through untamed wilderness in search of opportunity. The series debuts Sunday on the Paramount+ streaming service.

McGraw says it was hard not to think of his own family in portraying James Dutton.

"It’s certainly different circumstances, of course. But being the dad of three daughters really helped play and create this sort of relationship" with his screen daughter, Elsa, McGraw said.

McGraw appreciates his character's devotion to family and admires his bravery.

"When you think about this guy (who) takes off, and he’s going to go by himself in a wagon across uncharted territory with his wife, his daughter, a 5-year-old son and two other women, who thinks that they can do that?" McGraw said.

For Hill, it was natural for deep-seated maternal protectiveness to infuse the role of Margaret Dutton.

"I will protect my kids," Hill said, an instinct that "kicked in in ‘1883’ as Margaret, as it does today. It’s just a natural thing that happens. And so don’t stand in my way, or I will hurt you."

Playing alongside her husband was a little trickier than playing a mom. The couple came up with a plan to not rehearse their scenes outside of the set, or even talk about them.

McGraw says he loved the idea that at this point in their lives, the couple had the opportunity to work together in "something this epic, this big and this strong."

"We were just awe-inspired by it," McGraw said.

The Dutton family journey, which takes them through the Great Plains toward the territory of Montana, is part of the western expansion that reflected the nation's belief that it was destined to settle all of North America.

The cast also includes Sam Elliott, Billy Bob Thornton and LaMonica Garrett.

"Yellowstone," the story of the modern Dutton family and its ranching empire, stars Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes and Kelly Reilly and is in its fourth season. Its co-creator, Taylor Sheridan, created "1883."
