John Rich remembers attending CMA Fest at 16 to watch the Judds: 'It was the biggest thrill'

John Rich still remembers the first time he attended CMA Fest, a festival dedicated to country music fans, as a teenager.

Rich, who was 16 at the time, saved up his money to see the Judds play live.

"The first time I ever came I was about 16 or 17, saved up my money. I bought a ticket to Fan Fare [now named CMA Fest] to come see the Judds: Wynonna and Naomi," Rich told ӣ��Ƶ Digital in June when the 2023 CMA Fest was playing.

He continued, "It was the biggest thrill I've ever had at that point in my life because I got that close to some of my heroes in country music."

Though Rich didn't perform at this year's CMA Fest – he put on a show at his downtown Nashville bar Redneck Riviera – Jason Aldean did, and he expressed to ӣ��Ƶ Digital he was very excited to participate in the festival's 50th anniversary.

"When I think back to how this whole thing got started, it was way before I got to town and before any of us got to town," Aldean said in June. "To be one of the artists that gets to carry that on, to me is really cool."

He continued, "It's only gotten bigger and better every single year. It's always good to be a part of that and be a part of country music history."

Adam Doleac echoed Aldean's statement, saying that every year the festival is "all of my buddies in the same spot playing shows."

"It has the best fans in country music all in the same place," he continued. "We get to play shows for people who have been wanting us to play for a long time. It's a great week."

Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw and Dierks Bentley headlined the popular weekend event hosted by the Country Music Association last month.

Bentley spoke about hosting the 2023 CMA Fest with Lainey Wilson and Elle King: "I feel really lucky to be hosting with both of them."

Wilson kicked off CMA Fest with Tractor Supply Co. to host the Bell Bottom Barn Dance. The invite-only event was full of members from Wilson's fan club and included performances from the "Heart Like a Truck" singer and members of Tractor Supply's "Emerging Artists Program."

Of co-hosting with King and Wilson, Bentley added, "A lot of hosting is just spending time together. I like being around both of them, they are great people, great artists, I have tremendous respect for them. They're both very funny in completely different ways, and they're just good friends."

The 2023 CMA Fest special is scheduled to air July 19 on ABC at 8 p.m. ET and on Hulu the following day.

CMA country music festival suspends concerts due to severe weather

CMAFest outdoor concerts were shutdown Sunday due to weather concerns in Nashville, Tennessee.

Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw and Dierks Bentley are set to headline the popular weekend event hosted by the Country Music Association.

"Outdoor stages are temporarily suspended for weather," organizers of the country music tweeted. "Calmly & safely seek shelter immediately.

They added, "Shelters: Music City Center & Garage, Bridgestone Arena, Hilton Hotel Garage, 222 Garage or nearest business. Stay tuned for updates through app notifications."

One hour later, organizers shared that all outdoor stages would remain closed for the remainder of the day.

"NWS is tracking inclement weather & all outdoor daytime stages will not reopen," CMAFest tweeted Sunday. "Await further instructions before heading to Nissan Stadium, gates will be delayed."

Saturday's headliners included Jason Aldean, Little Big Town, Jon Pardi, Old Dominion and Eric Church.

One fan wrote, "Feels like Eric Church all over again." Another follower tweeted, "You guys are getting great at shutting things down early!"

Country fans wondered why Eric's set seemed to be cut short Saturday.

"What happened? @ericchurch walked off a short set from #CMAfest without as much as a thanks for coming," one follower asked on Twitter.

"I’ve seen him so many times and that was so strange. There’s gotta be more to this story."

Despite having to switch plans due to unforeseen circumstances, the festival tweeted later in the day: "As we continue monitoring inclement weather near #CMAfest, we're optimistic that we'll be able to put on a full show this evening."

Dierks Bentley hilariously documents bra shopping with teenage daughter: 'Call mom'

Dad duty took priority for country star Dierks Bentley this weekend as he stepped away from his responsibilities as co-host of CMA Fest to take his teenage daughter on an important outing: to buy a bra.

Bentley, who is co-hosting the three-day festival along with Elle King and Lainey Wilson, took to his TikTok to document the entire ordeal, noting it was his "night off."

The video begins with Bentley in a store, following his daughter around as she peruses through merchandise. "What are these," she asks her father, pointing to brightly colored bras. "Uh - I believe that's a bra," Bentley comments.

With a quip of her own, the young girl says, "Obviously, duh," before the camera pans back to a flabbergasted Bentley. "Wow," he says to the camera.

Bentley is enveloped by a room full of bras and underwear and makes his way over to a sign that explains all the bras the store offers.

"Lightly lined?" he says before his daughter tells him they are looking for something else.

The musician, 47, looks dazed and confused.

His daughter alerts Bentley that they found the elusive bra tops. "Oh my god, Dad, we found it," she says excitedly.

"See, we nailed it," Bentley says, presenting a lackluster thumbs up to the camera before his daughter clarifies that they are, in fact, not the items she wants.

Bentley then points the camera towards a drawer labeled ‘lace,' to which he emphatically declares, "No, we're not doing lace."

Giving up, he announces, "We need your mom here. Call mom."

Bentley and his wife Cassidy have been married since 2005. They share three children together, daughters Evalyn Day, 14 and Jordan Catherine, 12, as well as son Knox, 9.

2021 CMA Fest canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic

Country music festival CMA Fest in Nashville, Tennessee, will be canceled for a second year in a row because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Country Music Association announced on Tuesday the decision to cancel the June event, which is one of the oldest country music festivals after starting in 1972 as Fan Fair. It was also canceled last year.

"While we are optimistic with the pace at which COVID-19 vaccines are becoming more widely available, we still face several challenges that prevent us from bringing our many artists, crew members and fans together safely for the full CMA Fest experience we know everyone has come to expect," CMA CEO Sarah Trahern said in a statement.

Trahern explained that the festival takes place at several Nashville venues and couldn't be rescheduled for later in the year. Venues would also have capacity restrictions that would limit attendance. Further, the festival draws many out-of-state and international visitors that would be impacted by travel restrictions.

This year’s CMA Fest in Nashville has included some memorable moments, and Saturday night’s shows were no different.

Tim McGraw cranked out his biggest country hits, including “All I Want,” and “Southern Voice.”

But McGraw halted his show at one point to salute country star Randy Travis, who was in the audience.

Travis recently released new music six years after suffering a near-fatal stroke.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Randy Travis is right there in the front, come on,” McGraw said, according to the Tennessean of Nashville. “How much better can it be in Nashville than to be in a stadium and have Randy Travis on the front row?”

Also Saturday, singer Billy Ray Cyrus took the stage with Lil Nas X and Keith Urban for a performance of the hit country-hip hop hybrid song “Old Town Road,” the Tennessean reported.

The song was the center of controversy when it was removed from a Billboard country chart earlier this year.

On Friday night, it was a mix of country and rock as superstar Carrie Underwood was joined onstage by Joan Jett.

According to People magazine, the pair teamed up for five songs familiar to Jett’s fans: “Bad Reputation,” “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” “Crimson and Clover,” “Fresh Start,” and “I Love Rock & Roll.”

Underwood was fresh off her big night at the CMT Music Awards, taking home the show’s top honor with Video of the Year for “Cry Pretty.”

CMA Fest started Thursday with acts including Rascal Flatts and Florida Georgia Line.

The event will conclude Sunday with artists such as the Marshall Tucker band, Trisha Yearwood, Keith Urban and Luke Bryan scheduled to perform.

The big-name artists have been performing at Nissan Stadium, home of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, while other shows have been held at nearby stages and amphitheaters.
