Mississippi middle schoolers stop runaway bus after driver loses consciousness from asthma attack

A group of Mississippi middle school students jumped into action this week to stop a school bus after the driver lost consciousness on a highway, preventing a potential crash.

About 40 students from Hancock Middle School were on board when their driver, Leah Taylor, 46, suffered an asthma attack shortly after leaving campus, according to The Associated Press.

Taylor attempted to grab her medication but passed out before she could reach it.

Without hesitation, the students sprang into action to keep the bus from crashing.

Sixth grader Jackson Casnave, 12, who was sitting behind the driver, noticed the bus begin to swerve. He rushed forward to grab the wheel and called for help.

"I didn’t have time to process my emotions," Casnave said. "I just wanted to make sure that nobody got hurt."

Darrius Clark, who is also 12, then hit the brakes, and the students steered the bus to a median and brought it to a stop.

Clark’s sister, Kayleigh, 13, called 911, later saying she struggled to hear the operator over the screams from classmates.

"I was scared, but also I had to help," Kayleigh said.

Eighth grader Destiny Cornelius, 15, saw the driver holding a nebulizer and helped administer the medication, while 13-year-old McKenzy Finch assisted.

Finch also noticed the driver’s phone ringing and alerted the district’s transportation team about what had happened.

Taylor, who has since made a full recovery, praised the students for their actions.

"I’m grateful for my students," Taylor said. "They’re the ones that saved my life and everybody else’s on that bus."

The students were honored at a school pep rally Friday and are set to receive a celebratory lunch next week, The AP reported.

"What they did took courage," the school's principal, Dr. Melissa Saucier, said. "They didn’t wait for somebody to step in, they stepped up themselves, and that says a lot about their character."

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves on Friday said he will call a special legislative session to redraw district lines after the U.S. Supreme Court issues a ruling in a key redistricting case.

Reeves said the session would take place 21 days after the court rules in Louisiana v. Callais, a case that could reshape how states apply the Voting Rights Act.

The case centers on Louisiana’s 2024 congressional map, which added a second majority-Black district and is being challenged as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.

The outcome could influence redistricting battles nationwide, particularly in Republican-led states, ahead of this year’s midterms.

SCOTUS CONSERVATIVES SIGNAL READINESS TO CURB LATE-ARRIVING MAIL BALLOTS

Reeves said the ruling could also affect a separate Mississippi case requiring the state to redraw its Supreme Court district lines.

That lawsuit, filed by groups including the Southern Poverty Law Center and the American Civil Liberties Union, argues the current map dilutes the voting strength of Black voters in violation of federal law, according to WLBT.

The state appealed the decision to the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which paused the ruling pending the outcome of Callais.

He added that he is using his authority to allow lawmakers to redraw maps once the Supreme Court provides clarity.

"For those reasons, I am using my constitutional authority to allow the Mississippi Legislature to use their constitutionally recognized right to draw these maps once the new rules of the game are known following Callais," Reeves said.

Reeves said the decision could "forever change the way we draw electoral maps."

In October, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority appeared open to weakening a key Voting Rights Act provision that bars states from diluting minority voting power. Critics have warned such a ruling could further erode protections for minority voters.

The U.S. military carried out a lethal strike on a suspected drug-trafficking vessel in the Eastern Pacific on Friday, killing two suspected narco-terrorists, according to U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

"On April 24, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations," SOUTHCOM said in a post on X.

"Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations," the post continued. "Two male narco-terrorists were killed during this action."

No U.S. military forces were harmed.

Former North Carolina police officer arrested for allegedly planning mass shooting at New Orleans festival

A former North Carolina police officer was arrested in Florida after authorities said he planned a mass shooting at a New Orleans music festival.

Christopher Gillum, 45, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was taken into custody around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday at a hotel in Destin, Florida, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities said Gillum was wanted for making "terroristic threats" and was believed to be traveling to a festival in New Orleans to "conduct a mass shooting."

Investigators recovered a handgun and about 200 rounds of ammunition from his hotel room.

Gillum’s family reported him missing Tuesday, telling authorities he had a history of self-harm and had made threats to harm "Black people," according to a police bulletin from Burlington, North Carolina.

Lt. Clint Lyons of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office said Gillum left the state before authorities could initiate an involuntary commitment, adding there were no legal grounds to detain him at the time.

Earlier Wednesday, Gillum was stopped by law enforcement in Okaloosa County but was released because he did not meet criteria for arrest or commitment, according to the bulletin.

Deputies later conducted surveillance after learning he was under investigation and arrested him once a warrant was issued from Louisiana, authorities said.

A Louisiana man who pleaded guilty to raping and impregnating his 12-year-old relative is an illegal immigrant from Honduras, federal officials confirmed to ӣ��Ƶ on Wednesday.

Jose Lopez-Montoya, 41, described by local media as a "Lake Charles man," faces up to 99 years in prison after repeatedly abusing the minor.

The Department of Homeland Security told ӣ��Ƶ that Lopez-Montoya is a Honduran national who illegally entered the U.S. in 2011 under the Obama administration.

Lopez-Montoya was arrested on two counts of first-degree rape and is also subject to an immigration detainer.

He pleaded guilty this week to aggravated crimes against nature by incest and faces 25 to 99 years in prison, according to KPLC.

Minnesota allows ‘happy hour’ in nursing homes under new law easing alcohol restrictions

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed a bill Tuesday allowing nursing home residents to drink alcohol, clearing the way for "happy hour" in senior living facilities.

Previously, Minnesota law barred facilities from organizing events that included alcohol without a liquor license. The new "Grandparents’ Happy Hour" law allows nursing homes and assisted living facilities to serve alcohol without one.

The measure also updates the state’s liquor laws, allowing some cities to issue licenses and easing rules for certain businesses, including nursing homes and University of Minnesota facilities.

Walz announced the bill in a post on X, encouraging seniors to enjoy a drink.

ICE detains illegal immigrant accused of sexually assaulting minor after hospital parking lot birth

Federal immigration officials issued a detainer for a Mexican national accused of sexually assaulting a minor in South Carolina after the victim was found giving birth in a hospital parking lot.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer for Luis Armando Argueta Montejo, who is accused of having sexual intercourse with a female minor believed to be between the ages of 11 and 14.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Montejo was arrested days after the minor was found giving birth in the parking lot of Oconee Memorial Hospital in South Carolina.

Evidence collected by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office indicated that Montejo had sexual intercourse with the victim, according to DHS.

The 43-year-old was charged with incest and three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a child, DHS said.

Montejo told ICE he first entered the U.S. in 2006 and does not have a prior criminal record, according to officials.

The U.S. military is launching a new autonomous warfare command to deploy cutting-edge unmanned systems across Latin America, marking a first-of-its-kind move by a combatant command.

The U.S. Southern Command commander, Gen. Francis Donovan, said Tuesday he ordered the creation of the SOUTHCOM Autonomous Warfare Command (SAWC) to support national security priorities and regional efforts.

"From the seafloor to space and across the cyber domain, we fully intend to leverage the clear superiority of the American defense ecosystem by deploying cutting-edge innovation and working ever closer with our enduring partners in the region to outmatch those who threaten our collective peace and security," Donovan said in a statement.

According to SOUTHCOM, the new command will employ "autonomous, semi-autonomous, and unmanned platforms and systems to counter threats and challenges across domains, linking tactical missions to long-term strategic effects."

A life jacket worn by a Titanic survivor sold for more than $900,000 at auction Saturday, far exceeding expectations and highlighting the enduring fascination with the doomed ship.

The flotation device — believed to be one of only a handful of Titanic life jackets still in existence — was used by first-class passenger Laura Mabel Francatelli during the ship’s 1912 sinking and was the only one of its kind ever offered at auction.

It sold for 670,000 pounds, or roughly $906,000, including fees, at Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes, England, to an unidentified telephone bidder.

The final price far surpassed its estimated range of about $339,000 to $475,000.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani celebrated a proposal to tax luxury second homes owned by the ultra-wealthy, a plan expected to generate at least $500 million annually.

Earlier in the day, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul unveiled a pied-à-terre tax on luxury second homes in New York City valued at $5 million or more, allowing the city to impose an annual surcharge on ultra-wealthy nonresidents.

The proposal is projected to generate at least $500 million annually, according to Hochul.

Mamdani praised the plan, noting he campaigned on taxing the wealthy.

"When I ran for mayor, I said I was going to tax the rich. Well, today, we're taxing the rich," he said in a video posted on X.

He said the tax is designed for the "richest of the rich," people who "store their wealth in New York City real estate but who don't actually live here."

"This is a fundamentally unfair system that hurts working New Yorkers," Mamdani said. "Now, it's coming to an end."

He added that revenue from the tax would go toward initiatives such as free childcare, cleaner streets and safer neighborhoods.

According to the governor’s office, the pied-à-terre tax would apply to residential properties in New York City that are not used as a primary residence.

Hochul said the tax would "ensure that those that own luxury homes, but do not live in the City or pay City income tax are still fairly contributing towards the funding of the essential services like policing and parks that make New York City a global destination."

"It is not a tax on residents. That is so important. We're talking about people who are ultrawealthy," she said during a news conference Wednesday.

Hochul added that the proposal would help generate revenue as the city faces budget constraints without affecting most residents.

Newly released video shows the moment an Oklahoma high school principal confronted and tackled a gunman after he opened fire inside the school.

The footage shows Pauls Valley High School Principal Kirk Moore confronting the suspect — identified as 20-year-old former student Victor Hawkins — after he walked into the building on April 7.

Moore was shot in the leg during the confrontation and was airlifted to a hospital in stable condition, authorities said.

The video also shows someone opening a door and allowing the suspected shooter into the building.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) told KFOR-TV it does not believe the individual was working with the suspect. Investigators have not determined whether the person who opened the door was a student or staff member, a spokesperson said.

An OSBI spokesperson told ӣ��Ƶ Digital there are no other suspects in the incident.

Authorities said the shooting unfolded around 2:21 p.m., prompting a lockdown until officers cleared the scene. Moore and other staff subdued the gunman until law enforcement arrived and arrested Hawkins.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the outlet, Hawkins entered the school carrying two loaded semi-automatic pistols.

The affidavit states Moore ran to the lobby after hearing gunfire, where Hawkins allegedly fired at him, striking him in the leg.

Moore then "wrestled with Hawkins on a bench in the foyer and was able to remove Hawkins’ pistol from his hand," according to the affidavit. Moore and other staff held the suspect down until officers arrived.

Hawkins was charged last week with one count of shooting with intent to kill, one count of carrying a weapon into a public assembly, and two counts of feloniously pointing a firearm.

Court documents reviewed by the outlet show Hawkins studied the Columbine school shooting and told investigators he "wanted to conduct his own school shooting like the Columbine shooters did."

After entering the school, Hawkins allegedly pointed a gun and yelled for people to "get on the ground," KFOR reported.

He then pointed a gun at a student and attempted to fire, but the weapon malfunctioned, according to the affidavit.

Hawkins attempted to clear the malfunction before later firing at another student, who raised his hands and pleaded not to be shot, the affidavit states.

According to investigators, Hawkins lowered his weapon and told the students to leave.

The OSBI said Moore and school staff acted quickly to stop the attack.

"The principal of the school had noticed that an adult male subject, 20 years old, had stepped foot into the school with a gun," OSBI spokesperson Hunter McKee told KOCO-TV. "When the principal noticed this, he quickly stepped in, as well as other staff. The subject was able to fire multiple rounds, where the principal was hurt, but no one else was."

"The actions of the staff and the principal stepping in as soon as they saw a subject with a firearm saved lives today," McKee added.

The U.S. military carried out a lethal strike on a suspected drug-trafficking vessel in the Eastern Pacific, killing four alleged narco-terrorists, according to U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

"On April 14, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations," SOUTHCOM said in a post on X. "Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations."

"Four male narco-terrorists were killed during this action," SOUTHCOM said.

Eric Swalwell under federal investigation over alleged unauthorized nanny hire

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., is under investigation by federal authorities over allegations he violated immigration and employment laws to keep a live-in nanny in the U.S. while she lacked work authorization.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) confirmed to ӣ��Ƶ that it has referred the matter to the Department of Homeland Security law enforcement for investigation.

"USCIS has been collecting information on the allegations involving Congressman Eric Swalwell hiring of a Brazilian national as a nanny without lawful work authorization. These allegations are serious… Federal law prohibits employers from knowingly hiring aliens who are not authorized to work in the United States. No employer, including a member of Congress, is above the law. DHS will continue to aggressively enforce statutes to uphold the rule of law and protect American workers," a USCIS spokesperson said in a statement.

A complaint filed Tuesday with the Department of Labor alleges that Swalwell and his wife, Brittany Swalwell, lied to keep their babysitter, Amanda Barbosa, employed, according to The New York Post.

In a separate complaint filed in February with DHS by California filmmaker and political activist Joel Gilbert, first reported by The Post, Swalwell is accused of paying his nanny with campaign funds for roughly two years while she allegedly did not have valid work authorization.

"Barbosa appears in numerous social media photos with the Swalwell family throughout 2023 and 2024, indicating continued close association and ongoing childcare responsibilities despite the absence of known lawful work authorization," the DHS complaint states.

Barbosa was first hired by Swalwell — who is running for California governor — in 2021 after coming to the U.S. from Brazil on an au pair visa, according to The Post.

Barbosa was paid $3,914 in campaign funds in 2021 and received $46,930 in 2022, according to Federal Election Commission data.

According to a labor certification application reviewed by The Post, Swalwell began the process of sponsoring Barbosa for a green card in December 2022 as her visa was set to expire.

FEC records reviewed by the outlet show that $52,262 in campaign expenses for "childcare" were reimbursed to Swalwell, which the complaint alleges was a workaround to keep Barbosa employed while she was not authorized to work in the U.S.

The Department of Labor told The Post the labor certification was approved in 2024. In 2025, Barbosa received $38,905 in campaign funds from Swalwell, according to FEC data.

Vance says US-Iran talks end without deal after 21 hours of negotiations

Vice President JD Vance said Sunday that high-stakes talks between the U.S. and Iran ended without a deal after Iranian officials refused to accept American terms.

Speaking during a press conference from the Serena Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan, Vance said Iran has "chosen not to accept our terms."

"The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement," Vance said. "And I think that's bad news for Iran much more than it's bad news for the United States of America."

The vice president said talks with Iranian officials lasted 21 hours, describing them as "substantive discussions," but adding the U.S. was unwilling to compromise on its "red lines."

"So we go back to the United States, having not come to an agreement. "I don't know how many times we talked to him — a half dozen times, a dozen times over the past 21 hours," Vance said, adding that the U.S. team was also communicating with other members of the Trump administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

Vance was joined by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, as part of a senior delegation engaging Iranian officials in Islamabad.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf were negotiating for Iran.

While Vance declined to elaborate on which terms Iran rejected, he said the U.S. sought assurances that Iran would not develop a nuclear weapon.

"The simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon," Vance said. "That is the core goal of the president of the United States. And that's what we've tried to achieve through these negotiations."

Sen Tim Sheehy makes emergency landing after in-flight engine failure

Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., was forced to make an emergency landing Friday after experiencing in-flight engine failure while piloting a plane.

According to Sheehy’s chief of staff, Mike Berg, the senator was conducting a routine flight training exercise that he completes twice a year.

"This afternoon, Sen. Sheehy was engaged in a routine flight training exercise which he completes twice a year," Berg said in a statement. "The aircraft experienced a mechanical engine failure."

Berg said Sheehy and his co-pilot made an emergency landing in a field.

Coast Guard seizes over 4,500 pounds of cocaine worth $34M from suspected narco-terrorist vessel on Easter

The U.S. Coast Guard seized more than 4,500 pounds of cocaine worth nearly $34 million in what officials described as a suspected "narcoterrorist" vessel in the Eastern Pacific on Easter Sunday, according to DHS.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Coast Guard cutter Escanaba was alerted by a maritime patrol aircraft that the crew of a suspected narcoterrorist vessel was throwing contraband overboard.

The Coast Guard deployed an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew to investigate the vessel, which was operating off the coast of Manta, Ecuador.

DHS said the Escanaba crew deployed a cutter pursuit boat and recovered more than 4,510 pounds of cocaine.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the recovery was part of Operation Pacific Viper, a Coast Guard counter-drug operation launched in August 2025 in the Eastern Pacific.

"Operation Pacific Viper plays a central part of President Trump’s fight against the cartels at sea, cutting off their ability to make money by trafficking their poison into our country," Mullin said in a statement. "This operation has already seized over 215,000 pounds of cocaine and has arrested over 160 suspected narco-traffickers."

He added, "The brave men and women of the Coast Guard are saving American lives by keeping these deadly drugs out of our communities and off our streets."

DHS said the Coast Guard’s efforts to disrupt drug trafficking in the Eastern Pacific are a key part of the Trump administration’s initiative to combat narcoterrorism and dismantle transnational criminal organizations.

Through Operation Pacific Viper, the Coast Guard has seized more than 215,000 pounds of cocaine and apprehended more than 160 suspected narcotraffickers, according to DHS.

According to DHS, the operation included the Coast Guard's largest drug seizure in its history, when it recovered more than 76,000 pounds of illegal drugs in August 2025, valued at $473 million. The total reflects multiple interdictions combined into a single offload.

The Coast Guard also seized nearly 50,000 pounds of illicit drugs in November 2025, valued at $362 million — one of the largest totals attributed to a Coast Guard cutter from multiple interdictions, according to DHS.

A Wisconsin couple was arrested after allegedly starving their six children for years, forcing them to eat mold, bugs and dog food as they endured repeated abuse, authorities said.

Casey Cano, 38, and Mary Cano, 35, face six counts each of repeated physical abuse of a child causing great bodily harm and child neglect, along with one count of causing a child under 13 to view or listen to a sex act, according to court records.

Prosecutors alleged that from January 2018 through April 2022, the couple repeatedly beat their children with belts, leaving welts and causing bleeding at their home in Crawford County, Wisconsin, News 8 Now reported.

The outlet reported that the parents also withheld food from their children as punishment.

ALABAMA TEACHER ARRESTED, FIRED AFTER ALLEGED BEATING OF SON CAPTURED ON CAMERA

The children described abusive living conditions and were allegedly prevented from eating for several days, driving them to eat mold, bugs, dog food and grass due to extreme hunger, according to the criminal complaints.

One of the children said their sibling wore a diaper for three days without changing as "punishment," News 8 Now reported.

The children were removed from the home around April 2022 in connection with a separate sexual abuse case involving another child, the complaints state.

ABC affiliate WXOW reported that the children were between the ages of 1 and 9 during the alleged abuse.

The outlet added that the alleged beatings began when the children were as young as three months old.

The charges show that Mary Cano has a "party to a crime" modifier, indicating that she did not stop the alleged criminal activity.

Casey and Mary were previously convicted of the sexual assault of a 12-year-old in 2022, WXOW reported.

Texas man tackled by church security after bringing loaded gun, ammo to Houston service

A Texas man armed with a loaded gun and more than 100 rounds of ammunition was tackled by a security guard inside a Houston church before he could open fire, police said.

Emmanuel Ahsono Mbwavi, 23, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, court records show.

Houston police said that on March 15, Mbwavi arrived at Eden Church, which holds services at Post Entertainment Center in downtown Houston on Sunday mornings.

According to court documents, a member of the church’s security team recognized Mbwavi, who had been asked to leave the property roughly two months earlier after he tried handing out "concerning" flyers.

Based on that history, the church's pastor asked the security team to monitor Mbwavi.

The security guard told police he saw Mbwavi wearing a backpack and following a pastor into the bathroom, then walking in and out multiple times before disappearing into the crowd.

According to court documents, another pastor confronted Mbwavi, and while the two were speaking, the security guard noticed Mbwavi holding the grip of a pistol in his pocket.

The guard told police he saw Mbwavi reach for the gun and tackled him, believing he was about to harm members of the security team and congregation.

The security team and members of the church assisted the guard in restraining Mbwavi.

While on the ground, Mbwavi allegedly shouted, "I’m going to kill [the pastor], who is a fake prophet. I am a prophet called Warlock."

Mbwavi's cellphone was allegedly open to a notes application containing information about killing the church's pastor.

Mbwavi was carrying a .22-caliber revolver loaded with six live rounds, along with more than 100 additional rounds in his backpack, according to court documents.

Artemis II astronauts face toilet trouble as they head toward the moon

The four astronauts on the Artemis II mission are more than halfway to the moon after launching Wednesday from Kennedy Space Center, but a familiar problem has surfaced.

For the second time since launch, Orion’s toilet is malfunctioning.

"During the night, we tried to vent the wastewater tank that's attached to the toilet. We had problems with that, due to suspected blockage we think probably due to ice. So we directed the crew overnight to use their collapsible contingency urine devices," Judd Frieling, the Artemis II flight director, explained during a news conference Saturday.

The astronauts encountered a similar problem with the toilet on the first day of their mission. The ship's lunar loo malfunctioned following liftoff and has remained a lingering issue.

Debbie Korth, NASA’s Orion program deputy manager, said the toilet is still operable.

"But you know, they're okay and they're trying to manage through the situation," Honeycutt added.

NASA said the astronauts reported a smell coming from the bathroom, which is located in the floor of the capsule.

"Regarding the smell, I just wanted to make sure you all were tracking the EGS notes of the kind of burning heater smell that was coming from toilet several times," astronaut Christina Koch, who helped address the issue earlier this week, told mission control on Saturday, according to Space.com.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Saturday pushed back on claims by Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., that ICE agents struck an "asylum seeker," saying the man is an illegal immigrant who caused a crash while trying to evade arrest.

DHS told ӣ��Ƶ that the man in question is a Honduran illegal immigrant with a final order of removal dating back to 2018.

According to DHS, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers attempted to arrest the individual, identified as Ever Omar Alvarenga-Rios, on Thursday in Baltimore, but he allegedly tried to evade arrest.

When officers conducted a vehicle stop, Alvarenga allegedly failed to comply with law enforcement and "drove recklessly" through the city, DHS said.

DHS claimed that Alvarenga then "slammed on his brakes," causing a multi-vehicle crash.

He then attempted to flee on foot and ignored law enforcement commands, DHS said, adding that ICE officers "followed their training and used the minimum amount of force necessary to make the arrest."

DHS said the two officers involved in the incident were injured and taken to the hospital.

"This illegal alien broke our laws, resisted arrest, sent two ICE law enforcement officers to the hospital, and endangered the general public. Thankfully both our officers are expected to make a full recovery," DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement.

"This dangerous attempt to resist arrest comes after sanctuary politicians have encouraged illegal aliens to evade arrest by hosting webinars instructing illegal aliens how to avoid being caught. Sanctuary politicians must stop encouraging this reckless behavior that endangers illegal aliens, our officers, and the public," she added.

Van Hollen on Saturday posted photos on social media of the man in a hospital bed, describing him as an "asylum seeker" who was rear-ended by an ICE vehicle while driving to work Thursday in Baltimore.

According to Van Hollen, the man suffered "significant injuries to his head, chest, back and hands."

The Maryland Democrat also said the man was detained and claimed ICE was violating his rights by denying him access to attorneys.

In a statement to ӣ��Ƶ Digital, Van Hollen said that ICE under the Trump administration "continues to prevent Ever Alvarenga from meeting with attorneys while in the hospital — preventing them from receiving full updates on his health condition or discussing his case so that the full set of facts can come to light."

"They have also blocked him from signing a privacy release so my office can make further inquiries. No matter what the Trump Administration says, the Constitution applies to everyone in the United States," Van Hollen added. "Mr. Alvarenga has a right to due process and full access to his legal representation. By standing in the way, it looks like the Administration has something to hide."

Colorado House advances conversion therapy lawsuit bill; GOP lawmaker calls it ‘slap in the face’ to SCOTUS

The Democratic-controlled Colorado House passed a bill Thursday allowing people harmed by conversion therapy to sue therapists, just days after the Supreme Court blocked enforcement of the state’s ban on the method.

HB26-1322 would establish a pathway for Coloradans to bring civil claims against licensed mental health professionals accused of causing harm through efforts to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

The bill also allows people to seek legal action against the entities that hired and supervised a professional who conducted conversion therapy. The bill now heads to the state Senate, which is also controlled by Democrats, for consideration.

The measure could open the door to lawsuits years after therapy takes place and expose providers to significant financial liability.

The legislation was advanced just days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Colorado cannot enforce its conversion therapy ban regarding conversations between therapists and LGBTQ+ minors, arguing the law likely violates the First Amendment by allowing some viewpoints but not others.

In an 8-1 decision Tuesday, the court said the law favors one viewpoint by allowing therapists to affirm a minor's gender identity or sexual orientation, but not help them change it if they want to.

Matt Soper, a Republican in the Colorado House, told ӣ��Ƶ Digital that the new bill pushed by Democrats is a "slap in the face" to the Supreme Court.

"We have a bill that’s designed to be a de facto ban on conversion therapy moving forward," Soper said.

"That just hits at the heartstrings of the average American, that the Supreme Court can’t even have a ruling be hot off the press before you have a legislature already pushing to undo what the Supreme Court just ruled," he continued.

"At the bottom line, there’s not even a sense of what the law is or can be from the Supreme Court when you have states that are already working really hard to undermine an 8-1 ruling.

"Americans don't like it when you have a legislature immediately trying to overturn or undermine the highest court in the land before the printing has even cooled down."

The sponsors of the bill in the Colorado House, Reps. Alex Valdez and Karen McCormick, released a statement following the high court’s ruling, reiterating that conversion therapy is "ineffective and harmful."

"In Colorado, you belong just the way you are. Now more than ever, we must protect LGBTQ+ Coloradans from the harmful practice that is conversion therapy. We vow to keep moving forward to safeguard the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in Colorado," the lawmakers said.

The Supreme Court’s decision stemmed from a lawsuit brought by Kaley Chiles, a licensed Christian therapist, who argued her conversations with youth clients were a form of protected speech.

The Colorado government argued the conversations amounted to professional conduct that the state was allowed to regulate.

The case centered on a law Colorado passed in 2019 banning what the state government described as conversion therapy.

While the 2019 law required that claims against providers be filed within two years, HB26-1322 would remove time limits for legal action, and if the victim has died, their representatives could pursue damages within five years of the individual’s death.

Soper criticized the bill for lacking a cap on recoverable damages or a statute of limitations on claims.

Artemis II crew describes life aboard Orion spacecraft on historic journey to the moon and back

NASA’s Artemis II crew is on its way to the moon, giving Americans a firsthand look at life aboard the spacecraft as they travel farther from Earth than any crew in more than half a century.

Astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch of the U.S., along with Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, boarded the 322-foot-tall Orion spacecraft and lifted off at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Artemis II crew is expected to travel around the moon and back.

Speaking with ӣ��Ƶ’ Trace Gallagher Thursday night, the four-person crew described what it is like to be part of a mission set to carry astronauts farther from Earth than any crewed flight since the Apollo era — and what life aboard Orion is like as they begin their 10-day journey.

"There is no difference between up and down, and so, yes, I've been sleeping with my feet there and my head down here, and it's very comfortable," said mission specialist Christina Koch. "I think I'll probably stay there the whole mission unless someone kicks me out. We're finding out how to make this space capsule a home."

Pilot Victor Glover said he was surprised when the crew got the "go for launch," turning the mission into reality.

"We like to say that we're prepared without having an expectation, but you know in the back of your mind, you kind of hope you launch," he explained. "And then when we got really close, it was like, wait, we're getting ready to go to space. And when those solids lit, you know, it was a ride where you're trying to be professional, but the kid inside of you wants to break out and just hoot and holler."

Glover credited NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems team and launch control team, who have been preparing for the mission for months.

"It was an example of how hard they've been working lately that we launched," he said. "Even though we didn't get to really watch, but it felt beautiful."

As the crew answered questions, they passed around a floating microphone in zero gravity. The crew had just completed a trans-lunar injection burn, committing the mission to a trajectory toward the moon.

"We are definitely 100% on our way to the moon," commander Reid Wiseman said. "The lunar gravity will take over in a couple of days here and start pulling us around the far side."

Wiseman highlighted the significance of the Artemis II mission.

"At the end of our trans-lunar injection here, about an hour and a half ago, we just really looked at each other. And I know the United States has done this 1968 through 1972, but it's just – this is unbelievable that we can put our minds to something and pull it off. This is an unbelievable technical accomplishment," he said.

Koch added that the crew was proud that it was traveling farther from Earth than any crewed mission in more than 50 years.

"We are not necessarily a crew that lives on superlatives, but it is a milestone that's important," she said. "It's important that people can understand and wrap their heads around what is the latest in what we're doing? What does this mean relative to what we've done in the past? What are we gonna be pushing for into the future?"

Artemis II follows the uncrewed Artemis I test flight and marks a major step toward future missions, including Artemis III, which is expected to involve a lunar lander from SpaceX, Blue Origin or both, according to NASA.

7-month-old baby killed by stray bullet in Brooklyn shooting, police say

A 7-month-old baby girl was killed by a stray bullet Wednesday afternoon when a gunman on a moped opened fire on a Brooklyn street, police said.

According to the New York City Police Department, two individuals on a moped approached the intersection of Moore Street and Humboldt Street in Brooklyn when the individual riding on the back fired a weapon multiple times, with a stray bullet striking a young girl on the sidewalk.

The NYPD has identified the 7-month-old girl as Kaori Patterson-Moore of Brooklyn. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The individuals fled the scene on the moped. The NYPD said one person of interest is in custody, while a manhunt is underway for the second suspect as police ask for the public’s help identifying those involved.

The shooting was believed to be gang-related, and the child was an unintended victim, according to police.

"There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling right now," New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a news conference. "A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant."

The shooting took place around 1:20 p.m. on a street corner where several adults and children were gathered. Police said there were no other injuries connected to the shooting.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the moped sped off after the shooting but crashed into an oncoming car two blocks away. Both riders fell off the vehicle, and the impact caused the passenger to lose both his shoes, she added.

One of the men on the moped was injured and taken to the hospital and is in police custody in connection with an unrelated investigation, police said. Investigators believe the man fits the description of the alleged shooter based on his clothing and appearance.

The other man fled and has not been located by police as of Wednesday evening.

No gun has been recovered from the scene, but two shell casings were found, police said.

"This is a terrible day in our city, a tragedy that truly shocks the conscious," Tisch said at the news conference. "As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them. It is unspeakable."

Investigators reviewed neighborhood security cameras and tracked the moped's movement following the shooting, Tisch said.

Mamdani said Wednesday’s homicide is a reminder that more work needs to be done to reduce gun violence.

Tiger Woods released from jail after DUI arrest; eyes appear bloodshot in booking photo

Tiger Woods was released from jail Friday night after he was arrested earlier in the day on a DUI charge following a car crash in Florida.

In a mugshot released hours after his arrest, Woods' eyes appeared bloodshot, as he wore a blue polo inside the Martin County Jail in Florida.

Woods was seen leaving the jail in the passenger seat of a black SUV after his release on bail late Friday, according to The Associated Press.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek confirmed in a news conference that Woods was traveling at "a high rate of speed" when his vehicle collided with another car, resulting in his vehicle rolling over onto the driver's side.

Authorities said Woods "exemplified signs of impairment." He blew "triple-zeroes" for alcohol but refused a urine test.

"DUI investigators came to the scene here, and Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment. They did several tests on him. Of course, he did explain the injuries and the surgeries that he had. We did take that into account, but they did do some in-depth roadside tests," Budensiek added.

"We really weren't suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case, and that proved to be true at the jail. . . . But when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused. And, so, he's been charged with DUI, with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test."

Woods was spotted on the phone after the crash, wearing navy blue shorts.

"This could've been a lot worse," Budensiek noted.

President Donald Trump commented on the arrest of his "very close friend."

"I feel so badly. He's got some difficulty," Trump said. "There was an accident, and that's all I know. Very close friend of mine. He's an amazing person, an amazing man, but some difficulty."

Woods has not commented on the arrest.

Woods currently is dating Trump's ex-daughter-in-law, Vanessa, whose daughter, Kai, is set to play college golf in Miami next week.

This is Woods' second DUI arrest within the last decade. In 2017, he was taken into custody, also in Jupiter Island, after taking prescription drugs and being asleep behind the wheel of a running car at 3 a.m.

In 2021, he got into a wreck that resulted in serious leg injuries that kept him off the golf course for the entire year.

Woods made his return to competitive golf earlier this week in the TGL championship after rupturing his Achilles just before last year's Masters (this year's tournament is in less than two weeks). Woods has not appeared on the links since the 2024 PGA Championship, in which he missed the cut.
