Archaeologists unearth ancient shopping receipt dating back thousands of years

Archaeologists came across a remarkable find while completing earthquake restoration work — a 15th-century BC Akkadian cuneiform tablet.

The tablet is inscribed with an administrative record, or receipt, sharing a large amount of furniture shopping.

The discovery was made in Aççana Höyük, known as Eski Alalah, in Turkey.

A cuneiform is a proper way of writing distinct from the alphabet, according to London's British Museum.

"It doesn't have 'letters' – instead it uses between 600 and 1,000 characters impressed on clay to spell words by dividing them up into syllables," the museum's website says.

The relic measures 4.2 to 3.5 centimeters and is 1.6 centimeters in thickness, according to a press release from the Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey.

The clay-inscribed tablet is said to show a record of the purchase of large amounts of wooden tables, chairs and stools.

Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, minister of culture and tourism of the Republic of Turkey, posted about the finding on X.

"We believe that this tablet, weighing 28 grams, will offer a new perspective to understand the economic structure and state system of the Late Bronze Age," said the post.

Ersoy said linguists will continue their work to figure out how many pieces of furniture were purchased, who bought the items and more.

A paramedic with the Houston Fire Department eager to learn more about his late grandfather's military service had a stroke of luck after he began his research.

Mark Holmes of Pearland, Texas, told ӣ��Ƶ Digital that a simple Google search not only taught him about his paternal grandfather, William Watson Holmes, and his service to America, but it led him to a physical piece of history.

William Watson Holmes served as a Marine during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient.

"I had always kind of wondered what my grandpa did in the war. I talked to my dad about it a few times, and my dad, all he knew was one of the islands he went to, was called Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands. Beyond that, I didn't know anything other than he got a Purple Heart," Mark Holmes said, adding that when he was 3 months old, his grandfather died.

As luck would have it, Mark Holmes came across a collector's website, U.S. Militaria Forum. He signed up and shared his grandfather’s story on the page to connect with other users, and it appeared one collector had an interesting discovery to offer.

The collector, Austin Wideman, spent years collecting World War II memorabilia, having close to 40 named pieces in his Marine collection.

Wideman posted photos of William Watson Holmes' uniform jacket after purchasing the coat from a seller in Gloucester, Virginia.

The tattered green jacket dons a "UNIS" mark on the back reading "322."

"UNIS marked items are my main focus with Marines. Marines would put these numbers on equipment so other Marines could tell which unit they were a part of. The number 322 tells me that William Holmes was [part] of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marine Division. By knowing that I was able to positively identify the uniform to William [Watson Holmes]," Wideman told ӣ��Ƶ Digital via email.

Mark Holmes and Wideman began conversing online, and the two men eventually met up in person.

"William was wounded when a Japanese land mine blew up riddling him with shrapnel in the back. This is why the jacket has burn holes all throughout the back. William Holmes was taken back to [the] states where he underwent emergency surgery on his spine to remove the shrapnel," Wideman said.

By chance, the hospital where William Watson Holmes was sent in Lee Hall, Virginia, was 30 minutes from where Wideman purchased the uniform.

Mark Holmes and his father, Randall Holmes, son of William Watson Holmes, flew to Missouri to meet up with Wideman to see the historic family piece himself.

Mark Holmes tried on his grandfather’s jacket, which fit him well.

Wideman said meeting Mark Holmes and his father, Randall Holmes, was a true honor.

"Watching Randall [Holmes] touch the jacket his dad was wounded in was extremely rewarding for me as a collector. We spoke about the jacket for hours and really enjoyed each other’s company. I’m already looking forward to seeing them again," Wideman said.

Wideman shared the history of the jacket with the Holmes family while they revealed personal stories of what it was like growing up with the veteran and hearing his stories about the war.

The Holmes family donated additional wartime pieces to Wideman so he could add them to his collection.

In return, Wideman had a replica of William Watson Holmes' jacket made for the family.

Fishing record set by West Virginia angler who used 3-year-old daughter's $10 pink rod

A man in Wayne County, West Virginia, caught a state record channel catfish in the pond on his father's farm in South Charleston using an unexpected rod.

John Tyler Rutherford reeled in a 43.51-inch-long, 46.70-pound channel catfish, according to a press release from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR).

Rutherford reportedly reeled in the big fish in July 21 by using his daughter's fishing rod and worms as bait.

"I got my daughter a little $9.99 pink rod… she's 3 and she can reel them in, but she can’t cast it out. So I cast it out for her and I was holding the rod and she was sitting on my lap," he told West Virginia Outdoors.

The common length for channel catfish is 22 inches with the longest maximum reported length being 52 inches, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The last West Virginia record for the channel catfish was set in the year 2022 for length, and in 2023 for weight.

WVDNR Director Brett McMillion congratulated Rutherford for his outstanding catch.

"This remarkable achievement highlights the superior quality of West Virginia’s fisheries and the dedication of our team in maintaining and enhancing these aquatic resources," McMillion said in the release.

The state also set new records for tiger trout, redbreast sunfish, bowfin, redear sunfish and black crappie caught this year.

U.S. safety officials and police have launched an investigation in response to a tragedy that occurred in Waldorf, Maryland, on Aug. 2, which left a 5-year-old boy dead and another injured after a bounce house went airborne during a baseball game.

Powerful wind gusts had lifted the bounce house approximately 15 to 20 feet in the air, causing children to fall before it landed on the playing field at Regency Furniture Stadium, Charles County officials announced in a press release.

EMS personnel, already stationed at the game, along with Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team trainers and volunteer first responders quickly began patient care of the two children within minutes of the event.

YOUNG BOY KILLED AFTER BOUNCE HOUSE GOES AIRBORNE AT MARYLAND BASEBALL GAME

Maryland State Police transported one 5-year-old male to a children's hospital, and he was later pronounced dead. A second pediatric patient reportedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office said it has no further updates and cannot disclose the status of the injured child's recovery.

"We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time. We thank our EMS team and the Maryland State Police for their swift actions to ensure the children received immediate care," Charles County Government Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq. said in the release.

2-YEAR-OLD DEAD IN ARIZONA AFTER BOUNCE HOUSE WAS SWEPT AWAY BY WIND

The team canceled all baseball games and activities the following day, per officials, and offered counseling and support to families, players and fans who attended the game.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) both confirmed to ӣ��Ƶ Digital that an investigation is underway. Officials are coordinating with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office on the investigation.

Both the CPSC and the MOSH did not have further comment on the incident as the probe is ongoing.

This is not the first bounce house-related incident in recent months.

In May, a 2-year-old child was killed and another injured when a bounce house was swept up by wind in Casa Grande, Arizona.

And in November, a 4-year-old boy died as a result of a bounce house strangulation, according to the CPSC.

At least 479 injuries and 28 deaths have happened in wind-related bounce house incidents around the world since 2000, according to a report conducted by the University of Georgia.

"These injuries are on top of an estimated 10,000 ER visits in the U.S. each year because of bounce house related accidents that regularly result in broken bones, muscle sprains and concussions," the report says.

Nationwide Children's Hospital, located in Columbus, Ohio, estimates that injuries associated with inflatable bounce houses in the U.S. equals more than 20 children treated in hospital emergency departments a day over the last 20 years.

CPSC's latest tips on bounce house safety:

-Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper setup.

-Make sure the bounce house is properly staked and anchored on a flat, even surface.

-Never place bounce houses near tree branches, power lines or fences.

-Only children about the same age and size should be jumping at one time. Always observe the maximum occupancy limit.

-Teach children to play safely – not tumble, wrestle or do flips.

-Keep children away from any gas generators or air pumps, especially if standing water is nearby.

-Children should always be supervised by an adult and or staff from the company which is operating the bounce house.

Safety tips to know as Hurricane Debby downgraded to tropical storm

Hurricane Debby made landfall Monday morning near Steinhatchee, Florida, as the storm brought heavy rains, strong winds and power outages to parts of the Sunshine State. Debby has since weakened to a tropical storm, FOX Weather reported.

After landfall, power outages skyrocketed to more than 300,000 utility customers following the Category 1 storm, according to PowerOutage.us.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) made it a point to remind Americans that extreme weather conditions put people at risk of power outages, carbon monoxide poisoning, fire and electric shock.

With hurricane season on the Gulf and Atlantic Coast running from June 1 to Nov. 30, according to the National Weather Service’s (NWS) current forecast, families still have time to review tropical storm hazards and prepare for worst-case scenarios.

It's suggested that you prepare now if you haven't already.

Here are safety precautions that the CPSC and the NWS want Americans to keep in mind for current and future storms.

Know how to use a generator

Each year, over 200 U.S. consumers die from generator-linked carbon monoxide poisoning each year, the CPSC estimates.

Carbon monoxide poisoning from portable gasoline-powered generators "can kill in minutes" because the gas is "colorless and odorless."

People who are exposed to carbon monoxide can lose consciousness before they recognize common poisoning symptoms such as nausea, dizziness or weakness, according to the CPSC.

Portable generators should never be operated inside the home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or on a porch, the CPSC said — and should instead be placed outside at least 20 feet away from a home.

7 WAYS TO STAY SAFE IN THIS SUMMER’S SCORCHING HEAT

"Opening doors or windows will not provide enough ventilation to prevent the buildup of lethal levels of CO," the CPSC reported.

"The generator's exhaust [should be kept] away from the home and any other buildings that someone could enter, while keeping windows and other openings closed in the exhaust path of the generator."

HURRICANE ESSENTIALS: 12 MUST-HAVE ITEMS TO HELP YOU SURVIVE THE STORM

Owners of generators and aspiring owners should review in-depth safety materials, keep up the machine maintenance per the manufacturer’s instructions and look for models that have carbon monoxide detectors with automatic shut-off technology, according to the CPSC.

Double-check CO and smoke alarms

Whether a household owns a generator or not, the CPSC said families should have battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms installed inside their home.

Detectors and alarms with built-in battery backups are also worth consideration, according to the CPSC.

For optimum safety, the CPSC said carbon monoxide detectors should be installed on each level of a home and placed outside separate bedrooms — while smoke alarms should be installed on each level of a home and placed inside each bedroom.

The CPSC said families should test carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms monthly to ensure these devices work and have adequate battery life long before a storm arrives.

"Never ignore an alarm when it sounds," the CPSC added.

"Get outside immediately. Then call 911."

Be careful with flammables

In the event of a power loss from a tropical storm or hurricane, some families might turn to flammable materials, such as charcoal or candles, to take care of household tasks.

However, charcoal should never be burned indoors because it "can produce lethal levels of [carbon monoxide]," the CPSC warned.

Just as with generators, charcoal grills should not be used in garages or enclosed spaces, even when a door is left open, the CPSC said.

15 EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS SUPPLIES EVERYONE SHOULD CONSIDER GETTING

The consumer safety agency also warned that candles should be used with caution.

"If using candles, do not burn them on or near anything that can catch fire," the CPSC said.

"Never leave burning candles unattended. Extinguish candles when leaving the room and before sleeping."

The CPSC recommends the use of flashlights over candles if both are available in a household.

Stay away from wet appliances

Since tropical storms and hurricanes are known to cause flooding, people should keep an eye out for wet appliances.

"Do not touch wet appliances that are still plugged into an electrical source," the CPSC warned.

BIDEN APPROVES FLORIDA EMERGENCY DECLARATION OVER TROPICAL STORM DEBBY

If flooding has occurred, families should have a professional or a gas or electric company perform a safety check on household appliances before resuming use, the CPSC noted.

"Replace all gas control valves, electrical wiring, circuit breakers and fuses that have been underwater," the CPSC said.

Watch out for gas leaks

Gas leaks can also happen during a tropical storm or hurricane, the CPSC warned.

If a gas leak is suspected, smelled or heard, families should leave their homes immediately.

"Contact local gas authorities from outside the home," the agency said. "Do not operate any electronics, such as lights or phone, before leaving."

National Weather Service: Tropical storm and hurricane safety tips

Families can and should take safety precautions before a tropical storm or hurricane arrives, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency’s storm safety guide said that people who live near the Gulf or Atlantic Coasts should know where their nearest storm evacuation zone is.

This information can be found on local government websites and emergency management resources or offices.

"Go bags" filled with "basic emergency" supplies should be packed before a storm arrives, according to the NWS.

The agency recommends packing "Basic Disaster Supplies" noted on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Ready.gov website.

These items include water (gallon per person), non-perishable food, battery-operated or hand crank radios, flashlights, a first aid kit and packs of extra batteries.

Other basic disaster supplies that Ready.gov names include a whistle to signal for help, dust masks to filter contaminated air, plastic sheeting and duct tape for sheltering in place, sanitation materials (moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties), a wrench or pliers for turning off utilities, a manual can opener, local maps and cell phone with chargers.

The NWS’s storm guide also recommends people consider having materials to fortify their home, such as wood planks for boarding windows.

Homeowners should also keep trees trimmed, bring loose outdoor furniture indoors, secure all doors and move cars into garages or another secure location, the NWS said.

The NWS said emergency evacuation and disaster plans should already be in place and reviewed with family before a storm approaches.

Written copies of the plans can be packed in go-bags, according to the agency’s storm guide.

Storm forecasts and updates can be found through local tv news stations, mobile phones, radio broadcasts, social media and Weather.gov, according to the NWS.

Colorado residents to vote on hunting ban of mountain lions, other wild cats

A proposal that would ban the hunting and commercial trapping of mountain lions along with other wild cats will soon be on the Colorado ballot.

The Colorado Secretary of State's Office confirmed to ӣ��Ƶ Digital that Proposed Initiative #91, "Prohibit Trophy Hunting," has more than enough signatures to qualify for the general election on Nov. 5.

If the measure passes, bobcats and lynx will also be protected.

PENNSYLVANIA'S 'PROHIBITION ON SUNDAY HUNTING' COULD END DUE TO LAWMAKERS

The initiative was heavily backed by wildlife advocates, including the Cats Aren't Trophies (CATs) organization, which is based in Grand Lake, Colorado.

"Colorado voters will have an opportunity to halt the inhumane and needless killing of mountain lions and bobcats for their heads and beautiful fur coats," Samantha Miller, CATs' campaign manager, said in a press release.

The proposed ballot measure accumulated nearly 200,000 signatures.

"While the measure stops the recreational trophy hunting and commercial fur trapping of wild cats, it allows lethal removal of any problem animal for the safety of people, pets or farm and ranch animals," Miller added.

Last hunting season, Colorado hunters killed 502 cats in the Centennial State, according to Colorado Parks & Wildlife.

Though some states have specific regulations on hunting species of wild cats, California has prevented mountain lion hunting since 1972 and, since 1990, the state protects the animals as a "nongame species," according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

In 2015, California banned trapping of bobcats, while in 2020, bobcat hunting was also banned.

Maine residents report rare 'devil bird' sightings

Maine residents have recently been reporting sightings of an anhinga bird around the Pine Tree State.

The Maine Audubon Society announced that some people on social media say they've seen an anhinga, also known as the "devil bird," in certain areas, according to FOX 23 Maine.

One woman snapped a photo of what appeared to be the winged animal and posted the image in the "Maine Wildlife" Facebook group on July 23, sparking comments.

TEACHER CAPTURES IMAGES OF 'VERY RARE' BIRD NEVER BEFORE SEEN IN US

The bird reporting website, eBird, managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York, lists 39 confirmed sightings of the bird in Maine.

The sightings are considered rare, as the birds are only known to be found in southern regions such as Florida, Texas, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast states, according to the National Audubon Society.

The anhinga's "devil bird" nickname originates from the Brazilian Tupi language, according to Cornell's website.

A representative from Cornell University Ornithology told ӣ��Ƶ Digital that anhingas were reported and confirmed by different observers in several Maine communities from July 24 through July 26.

"That does not mean there are 39 birds — it’s likely to be one bird observed by multiple people," the representative wrote in an email.

Anhinga birds have a long, narrow neck with a "dagger-pointed bill," and white markings on the upper side of their wings.

"A dark body stealthily swims through a lake with only a snakelike head poking above the surface. What may sound like the Loch Ness monster is actually an anhinga, swimming underwater and stabbing fish with its daggerlike bill," Cornell's website says.

"A bunch of birds are already starting to head south for the winter, so that usually means this tends to be what we call our rarity season, when it seems like just about anything can show up anytime, anywhere," Maine Audubon Society Staff Naturalist Doug Hitchcox told FOX 23.

Rare 'cotton candy' lobster caught in New England: '1 in 100 million'

A shiny lobster, known for its cotton candy-like colors, has been caught in New England.

The Atlantic Lobster Company trapped the remarkable pink and blue shellfish off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine.

The rare lobster joins two similar-looking lobsters at the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, New Hampshire.

"Cotton candy lobsters are approximately 1 in 100 million!" a representative at the science center told ӣ��Ƶ Digital via email.

"Lobsters come in a few color descriptions from orange, yellow, red, blue and cotton candy, which is a mixture of pinks and purples on a blue backdrop resembling ‘cotton candy,’ so this is where the name comes from," the representative wrote.

The Seacoast Science Center is a nonprofit marine science education organization with a mission to "spark curiosity, enhance understanding, and inspire the conservation of our Blue Planet," according to its website.

Lobsters are found on the east coast of North America, from Newfoundland in Canada to North Carolina, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

"There are also split lobsters, for example red on one side and black on the other; as well as calico, another rare coloration where the lobster has a distinctive black and orange mottled color pattern," the representative added.

No matter the color, all lobsters turn red once they hit hot water, according to NOAA.

This month, two different orange-colored lobsters were delivered to Red Lobster restaurants in North Carolina and Colorado.

They were both safely transported to local aquariums.

Orange lobsters obtain their color through the pigments they ingest in their diet, Jared Durrett, director of husbandry at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, located in Tennessee, told ӣ��Ƶ Digital. Orange-colored lobsters are 1 in 30 million.

Following an inspection with a microcamera, experts discovered it was possible to physically open the unsealed 2,000-year-old stone coffin known as a sarcophagus.

This was the first time the contents of the tomb have been seen with human eyes following its discovery last year near Naples.

Once opened, they found a mummy in an "excellent state of conservation," according to a press release from the Superintendence Archaeology Fine Arts & Landscape for the Naples Metropolitan Area.

The well-preserved remains of the body were found lying face-up covered by a shroud, which experts predict was mineralized to climatic conditions of the burial chamber.

"The Tomb of Cerberus continues to provide valuable information on the Phlegraean territory near Liternum, expanding knowledge of the past, and, and offering opportunities for research also of a multidisciplinary nature" Mariano Nuzzo, superintendent of archaeology with the Italian Ministry of Culture, said in the press release.

The Phlegraean Fields is a large caldera volcano west of Naples, Italy.

Experts believe with the "particular care given" to the mummy, it may be the founder of the family for which the mausoleum was built.

The remains were surrounded by various ointments and a small metal tool used in Ancient Greece and Rome to clean the body before bathing.

"In recent months, in fact, laboratory analysis conducted on samples taken at the inhumates and depositional beds, in fact, they returned a considerable amount of data about the treatment of the body of the deceased and the funerary ritual put in place," Nuzzo added.

Archaeologists, technicians, chemists and anthropologists, funded by the Ministry of Culture, will be continuing investigations and sampling activities.

A baby eagle that was separated from its family is now safe after wandering under a sergeant's patrol vehicle.

Officials with the Mohave County Sheriff's Office in Kingman, Arizona, shared news of the successful rescue of the little bird on Facebook along with photos and videos.

"Sergeant Giralde was working an off-duty road construction detail when the construction workers noticed a large bird had landed under his patrol vehicle. The creature appeared to be in distress and acting strangely," the post said.

Adult eagles can measure from 30-to-40 inches with a 7-to-8-foot wingspan and weigh between 8 and 14 pounds, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Video of the rescue shows the sergeant, along with another officer, cautiously placing a towel over the feathery creature.

They slowly placed the eagle in the back of the car to cool off from the Arizona heat.

An eagle's "distinctive white head and tail feathers appear when the eagles mature at 4 or 5 years old," according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

"Sergeant Giralde called the Arizona Raptor Center to pick up the animal, who told him that the bird appeared to be a juvenile eagle that had become separated from its parents. They estimated that the eagle probably wouldn't have survived if not for Sergeant Giralde's actions," the post said.

"We hope our new feathery friend makes a full recovery and want to send our thanks to the Arizona Raptor Center for taking care of him," Mohave County Sheriff's Office officials said in the post.

Arizona Raptor Center helps aid injured birds of prey and teach hunting techniques so they are able to safely be released back into the wild, according to the nonprofit's website.

Social media users took to Facebook to comment about the rescue.

In March, a bald eagle was rescued after being trapped in the front grille of an SUV in Maryland.

Animal control worked in coordination with the Calvert County Sheriff's Office to safely retrieve and release the bird back into its natural habitat.

Georgia boy advances to top 100 in USA Mullet Championship: 'My friends think it's cool'

Patrick Hayes of Cumming, Georgia, has been growing his mullet since he was 7 years old.

The 11-year-old has become a top 100 finalist in the USA Mullet Championship.

It's his first time competing in the event, he told ӣ��Ƶ Digital via email.

"[I] saw it last year and thought it looked cool. Everyone says that I need to be on TV with hair like this. We thought it would be a fun event," Hayes said.

The USA Mullet Championship has grown from a local Michigan competition in 2020 to a national event among all states.

Mullet wearers of all ages can participate in the competition in the kid, teen and adult categories.

Hayes said his hairdo is a conversation starter.

"My friends think it's cool, it's how all of my friends know me, and I get compliments all the time about it," he said.

The "business in the front, party in the back" hairstyle has been notably rocked by musicians David Bowie and Billy Ray Cyrus.

Part of the championship funds go to the Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors, a nonprofit that provides mortgage-free homes to critically-wounded combat veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the USA Mullet Championship website.

Colorado deputies remove 600-pound moose from resident's yard

A large moose is back where it belongs after wandering into the backyard of a Colorado home.

Officials with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office shared the successful rescue of the "meandering moose" on X along with photos and videos.

"How do you move a 600lb #moose? We found out because it took 8 people to move this one. Mr. Moose was peering in windows & taking a break in a yard," the post read.

Moose are the largest member of the deer family.

The animal could stand up to 7 feet tall, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The eight officers, including animal control officials, are seen in the video lifting the moose on a large tarp before slowly carrying the animal into the back of a trailer.

Adult male moose weigh between 1,200 to 1,600 pounds while adult females weigh 800 to 1,300 pounds, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Only the males, known as "bulls," have antlers.

This "meandering moose" was said to be transported back to its natural habitat.

This isn't the first moose rescue that has occurred in the U.S. in recent months.

In June, a baby moose in Alaska was saved from what police described as its "sure demise" after it fell into a lake and became wedged between a floatplane and a dock.

Though one of the calf's legs was stuck across the top of the plane's float, the rescuers were still able to pull the moose safely from the water.

An officer helped the calf stand up on the boardwalk and watched it reunite with its mother.

Archaeologists discover underwater mosaic believed to date back to Roman Empire

A team of underwater archaeologists have uncovered an ancient mosaic off the coast of Naples, Italy.

The rare find was discovered in the Submerged Archaeological Park of Baia.

"Thousands of marble slabs, hundreds of different shapes, [were] brought together to create a very articulated geometry" Campi Flegrei Archaeological Park officials wrote in a Facebook post.

DIVERS DISCOVER 19TH CENTURY SHIPWRECK CONTAINING HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS IN BALTIC SEA

The park is located in Campi Flegrei, an area of volcanic origin.

It's believed that the pieces are originally from a reception room of a villa built towards the end of the Roman Empire before volcanic activity, known as "bradyseism," brought the remains to the sea floor.

"There is the phenomenon of bradyseism, it consists of a elevation (positive bradyseism) or lowering of the ground level (negative bradyseism) relatively slow on the human time scale but very fast compared to geological times," the Campi Flegrei Archaeological Park's website says.

The mosaic that was found measures over 250 square meters.

"A very expensive and demanding intervention for the owner of the Villa, but he had to settle for recycled materials, ie second-hand marble, to create the chosen module, formed by refined squares, with each with inscribed circles," the Facebook post said.

The local mayor of the Bacoli municipality, Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, said the findings were "stupendous," according to a Facebook post.

The find was a coordination between the CSR Restoration of Cultural Heritage and the Naumacos Underwater Archaeology and Technology.

Researchers are working to extract the pieces of marble from the ocean floor.

A fishing crew recently set a new state record after reeling in a huge bull shark at the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.

The Bon Secour Butchers team on "The Orca" vessel caught the 494.5-pound beast at the tournament on Dauphin Island.

"A catch like that coming through our weigh station really galvanizes everyone and every entity involved. We all feel apart of the catch," an Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo representative told ӣ��Ƶ Digital.

PREDATORY SNAKEHEAD FISH SHOULD NOT BE RELEASED BACK INTO SOUTH CAROLINA WATERS, OFFICIALS REMIND ANGLERS

The team was assembled with Captain Adam Lyons, first mate Tommy "The Tuna Bowyer," Captain David Stiller "The Shark Killer" and crew member Michael Maguire.

"When you are tackling an animal this large, it is critical to leverage heavy tackle and perform excellent boat work," Captain Adam Lyons told ӣ��Ƶ Digital in an emailed statement.

"With a line in the water with that much tension there are risks involved, you want to avoid anything that could damage the line, such as the boat itself. Essentially, we want to tire the shark out to the point we can safely get a tail rope in place. Once we can tail the shark, it is game over for the shark."

"Boating the shark was relatively easy because we had a winch on board, which is normally used in commercial fishing. The combination of angler experience, captain work and patience was the winning recipe," Lyons added.

The group of men were awarded $6,000 for clinching first place for the Gulf Coast Hauling & Construction Bull Shark Jackpot.

"It’s really neat to see an angler get a once-in-a-lifetime catch and be able to break a rodeo and state record," Matt Glass, president, 91st Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, told ӣ��Ƶ Digital.

Founded in 1929, the rodeo is the largest fishing tournament in the world, attracting over 4,000 anglers and 75,000 spectators, according to the event's website.

North Carolina Red Lobster receives rare orange lobster accidentally delivered to restaurant

An orange lobster is now safe at an aquarium after it was accidentally delivered to a Red Lobster in Ashville, North Carolina.

The restaurant staff was familiar with different-colored rare lobsters and immediately recognized that this shellfish stood out from the bunch.

"When you get a whole entire aquarium that has lobsters in it, and they look like little rocks in it, and then you got one spec that's just sticking out, it looks like a little gold nugget. When you picked him up, he looked like he was pretty much cooked after he had been cooked and put back in the tank," a management team representative at the Red Lobster location told ӣ��Ƶ Digital via telephone.

SUPER RARE ORANGE LOBSTER ACCIDENTALLY DELIVERED TO COLORADO RED LOBSTER

The representative noted that orange lobsters are 1 in 30 million.

The lobster was delivered to the restaurant on a Friday and by Tuesday the creature found its new home.

"We were going to put it back in this natural habitat and ship it back up there, but the weather conditions were just too hot. And so, we reached out to our local aquariums," the representative said.

Named "Larry," the lobster was safely transported to The Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

"We receive calls quite often to save these curious creatures, and are looking forward to learning more from them," an aquarium representative told ӣ��Ƶ Digital.

Jared Durrett, director of husbandry at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, said there's a reason orange lobsters turn orange in color.

"Lobsters obtain their color through the pigments they ingest in their diet. If these orange lobsters are being harvested from the same region, perhaps their localized diet contains a pigment that, when paired with the lobster’s genetics, creates the orange coloration we are seeing," Durrett said.

A different orange lobster was accidentally delivered to a Red Lobster located in Pueblo, Colorado, this month.

The lobster was transported to Denver's Downtown Aquarium.

Divers discover 19th century shipwreck containing historical artifacts in Baltic Sea

A team of Polish divers have uncovered a 19th century shipwreck brimming with historical cargo.

The discovery was made in the Baltic Sea, about 20 nautical miles off the Swedish coast.

Divers found crates of Champagne, baskets of mineral water and porcelain artifacts.

"I have been diving for 40 years, and it often happens that there is one bottle or two... but to discover a wreck with so much cargo, it's a first for me," Tomasz Stachura, a diver and leader of the Baltictech Team, which is a group of technical divers, said in a press release.

Following the expedition, researchers were able to learn more about the vessel’s history by examining the artifacts.

"We managed to take pictures of the brand name stamped on a clay bottle, which turned out to be from the German company Selters – produces to this day. The logo had this precise shape during that period," Marek Cacaj, the underwater videographer, said in the release.

The divers estimate that the vessel capsized in the second half of the 19th century.

The Baltic Sea is the youngest sea on earth that emerged some 10,000-15,000 years ago as the glaciers retreated at the end of the last Ice Age, according to the WWF Baltic.

It is located in Northern Europe, enclosed by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden.

"The German brand, Selters water, was highly valued in the 19th century, often reserved for royal tables and considered almost medicinal," the press release said.

The Baltictech team is working in conjunction with the Maris Foundation and Södertörn University to further analyze the rare discovery.

The divers reported finding about 100 Champagne bottles.

Extracting the Champagne treasure will take time due to administrative restrictions, the divers noted in the release.

The Baltictech group has found numerous wrecks in the Baltic Sea.

Its last major find reportedly was the SS Karlsruhe which was the last ship to leave Pilawa (the port of Koenigsberg) in 1945 before the Russian occupation of East Prussia as part of Operation Hannibal.

Officials with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) are reminding anglers to steer clear of releasing a rare invasive species into the water if they happen to catch the fish.

Northern snakeheads are native to Asia and can stretch up to 3 feet in length, according to the SCDNR.

Sightings of the predatory fish have also been reported in Georgia, Missouri, California, Hawaii, Maryland and Virginia.

GEORGIA OFFICIALS CALL ON ANGLERS TO DONATE RED SNAPPER CARCASSES

Officials noted that this is a top-level predator, and "its introduction poses a substantial threat to native fish populations."

Ross Self, freshwater fisheries section chief with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), said in an emailed statement to ӣ��Ƶ Digital, "No documented sightings of northern snakehead fish in South Carolina have been reported since some were found in small numbers in private ponds in Georgia and North Carolina in 2019."

"The only documented snakehead ever seen in South Carolina was one that was voluntarily turned into SCDNR 15 years ago by a gentleman in Lake City, who had kept it in an aquarium," said Self.

He said the warning that SCDNR issued in 2019 remains the same: "If anglers catch one, destroy it."

The SCDNR advises anglers who catch the fish to reel it in, "keep the fish, [then] freeze it or place it on ice and contact the S.C. Department of Natural Resources."

RARE SNAKE-LIKE FISH THAT BREATHES AIR CAUGHT IN MISSOURI FOR FOURTH TIME: 'AGGRESSIVE PREDATORS'

When taking pictures of a snakehead, include "closeups of its mouth, fins and tail, and note where it was caught (waterbody, landmarks or GPS coordinates)," the agency also advised.

Snakehead fish are capable of breathing out of the water and can move short distances on land, experts said.

"It is believed that the northern snakehead fish entered the United States when aquarium owners discarded their unwanted exotic captive species into local waterways," the New York Invasive Species Information (IS) reported online.

"Snakehead fish breeding occurs during the summer months (June to August)," the IS website said.

It said there's not a full understanding of the snakehead fish's reproductive cycle.

Species of snakehead fish were added to the list of injurious wildlife under the Lacey Act in 2002.

The Lacey Act prohibits the transportation, possession or importation of particular fish, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

In South Carolina, it's unlawful to possess, transport or sell live snakehead fish.

Self said that South Carolina’s native fish, a bowfin, looks similar to snakeheads, and anglers have sent SCDNR photos of bowfin from anglers who thought they might have caught a snakehead.

He said he's asking anglers not to persecute native bowfin just because they resemble snakeheads.

In May, for only the fourth time in the state of Missouri, an angler caught a northern snakehead fish, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reported.

The MDC advised anglers to not release the fish or throw it along the bank.

Instead, anglers should photograph the fish so officials can positively identify the species and take note of the location where it was caught.
